Why did no one talk chris out of doing this poo poo seriously? did they not rehearse anything?! why just...WHY?!

I've encountered this a few times at work, it's what happens when a project has toxic leadership. The ego of the manager or director is paramount so all constructive criticism gets dismissed as being "negative" or even results in threats. Experienced operational staff and even paid experts get ignored when they raise serious issues even while the leadership eats up poo poo from outside contractor shills. Eventually it becomes apparent to all the staff that reality is a flexible thing under the current management so they start playing the game. Stats and reports get nudged or even outright fabricated to keep supervisors off their backs and serious issues are ignored or intentionally caused as often the only way things will get changed is if a client gets super pissed and complains. The end result is a leadership that floats around in a delusional bubble seeing and hearing only want they want and staff that are utterly disaffected and focused on self-preservation at the expense of everyone and everything around them.

Gamescon really shattered expectations though not in a positive way. The public demo build, so highly hyped was a damp squib that tbh i dont think even Derek 'called it' in how barren it was in features and gameplay.

All it was was a map and some ships, with a poo poo ton of bugs. Amusing to watch for a while, but it felt so deja vue. With chittering idiots hired to make distracting noises and (crap) ingame camera work doing its best to hide the constant glitches, this effort for damage control which i suspect a lot of energy went into completely failed. It was a bunch of paid streamers pretending to have fun and in the end the only fun most could have was seeing how far they push cig by laughing at it. Classic human behaviour.

The big Friday event revealed how cig's scripted demos work and how they drip feed new tech and coming soon hooks for the fans. Even a citizen must see how cig's big event demos are run by now. They did well to dismiss last year's sandworm demo (despite to us it's obvious demo flaws) but the 'game' crashing and having to be replayed to get to next part of the script is unavoidable to ignore. Add the many bugs such as ramp, invisible box, lag, jank, etc and you have a pretty broken demo by any standards. I hope the citizens ask why wasn't some of this new amazing tech in the public demo, which some stuff like mobi glass should of been quite easy to add. I'm not a games developer though. Plus i hope they ask how much of this demo is going to be actual gameplay, as comparing it to the show floor stuff i think i can see where the effort went. :(

As for the selling hooks like the camera and ships they are taking the piss in anyone's books. This was a joke and they should be ashamed.

I think they cut the presentation for it out. It was well after midnight when the demo ended. Hour late to start and the demo crash was another 30 minutes.

Just finished, and wow the big new feature was implementing webcam tech because they done a deal with a webcam company. I'm dying, Chris really is a used cars salesman. Maybe you shouldn't be giving Mad Catz any poo poo when you're selling a loving webcam.

I think this is the first time I have got a good sense of Chris's vision for the game. People keep asking what the gameplay loop is, but that isn't the point of the game. This game is made for the aeroplane/train/truck simulator crowd, where the game is a big Playstation Home lobby for you to roleplay being a ship captain/away team. Fetching a box, shooting a pirate, or mining a rock is just a an excuse for you to spend an hour feeling immersed. The point of the game is to run your fingers over the stitching of the chair upholstery, and walk through a sandstorm with surround sound blasting wind into your ears. When they call it a sandbox, they actually mean a toybox.

One of the things that really bugs me is how hosed up the scale of everything is. Landing zones and terrain feel massive and sprawling, taking you forever to get around. But the vehicles and ships feel tiny and cramped. It's so weird that they go to all of this trouble to make physics grids and space legs but you can't really fit anything inside anything else, and all of the immersion living and work spaces have been stripped out of the ships. Every ship is a variation of a pilot seat/turrets strapped to a tin can. The rover that you will be using for everything barely fits on the elevator of a mid-sized ship, and they had to have someone standing outside giving instructions as if they were parking a car in a very tight spot. The capital sized Idris is basically a flying hanger with bridge nailed on the front. The hanger has almost no vertical clearance and only enough space to comfortably fit two or three single seat fighters in a single line. I have no idea how this thing is supposed to crew 30-50 people, it looks more like 4-6. None of this poo poo makes any sense.

For me the mythical open-world space sim is very mechanically orientated. Running a trade empire, participating in naval battles between warring factions, amassing ships and armaments, inter species conflicts, and the struggle between the law and outlaws. Star Citizen is basically the opposite of that. It is about your ship, your environment, and the experience of getting from point A to point B. When this game comes out I think you'll get a huge backlash from basic package owners being very upset that there isn't a game, with the smaller whale contingent loving every minute of it and getting very defensive. To anyone watching from the outside, it will rival a Titanic or Hindenburg.

This is roughly the same realisation I came to after Roberts most recent interview. You are all imagining Star Citizen falling short because you are all imagining a game with gameplay. The PU is Star Citizen. That is the game people are funding. Everything else is just polish for that core experience. When Chris promises poo poo he doesn't appear to believe it himself.

Star Citizen is about being in a ship that is travelling somewhere.

*:wrong:

It's being marketed towards the aeroplane/truck/train simulator crowd while lacking the most important ingredient to any actual sim head and that's any semblance of plausible physics. The 'game' parts of the game if you can call them that are clearly geared towards fps/shooty kids whether you are in a vehicle or not which precludes the original sim goals they continue to give lip service to. The game is years into being built around these boost/dodge/strafe mechanics as it defines how everything interacts from top to bottom. Crobbler has been peddling mutually exclusive dreams to these two different crowds forever (the 2000 page controls/flight model threadnaught from the scuttled forum stretches back to 2013 and is a graveyard of frusty og's) and a day of reckoning will come ...if they survive long enough. Until then, cig just burns the candle on both ends pretending the game will fill both niches.

I mean, just watch the video of the dude playing/beating Arena Commander with one hand on the mouse and feet up on the desk. There's 2 of those vids, made a year apart and since that time cig has only doubled down on their revised 'fast and frenetic' 'easy to learn hard to master' gibberish. Any simheads still hanging around are the ones saying 'it's just alpha' (saw numerous examples today alone) when confronted about the flight model and really think crobbler will 'flip the immersion switch' one day if they stick around long enough.
