You don't want the old DKC aesthetic. The game wasn't that great looking in 1994 outside of the marvel that something at some point possibly made of of polygons was here on the Super Nintendo and not look like it's made of juice boxes, and there aren't many games time and hindsight has been less kind to. You'd be much better off just leaving it to memory and just having whatever beautiful upgrade your nostalga has given it be what you remember.

If they want to revisit old DKCs for remakes, I'd much rather they let Retro have at it or do something more stylized then try to recapture a visual style of actual poo poo molded into the shape of a gorilla smeared with Vaseline.

Because no one answered this: no, it wasn't, PS4 and xbone only. It may look ugly but there is miles more detail going on than Skyrim, I highly doubt they've got it even close to running on a Switch.

Yeah, SMW2: Yoshi's island's art style has aged much better than the DKC trilogy. Now that's a game that would be perfect for Switch

Tropical Freeze is one of the best-looking sidescrollers there's ever been and it's weird to say "no I don't want that, I want hi-def models pre-rendered into low-resolution sprites".

The SNES DKC games imagined the future of 3D graphics by jury-rigging them onto a 2D system. Now that the future of 3D graphics is actually here, that vision can be (and has been) reproduced directly in real-time. It's not really a "lost style" like some of the other pixel art of that era, it's a style that still exists now in better fidelity.

Are you a fan of the Fate franchise? Do you have a high tolerance for anime storytelling? If the answer to these questions is no, that might be a problem.

I've been playing it and having a lot of fun, but I have to admit it doesn't quite hold up to Hyrule Warriors. It doesn't have the insane amount of content of HW's adventure mode. You can only lock onto bosses, not any of the mid-strength enemies, which is a constant annoyance throughout the game. The levels aren't traditional Warriors-style open fields with capturable areas, there's just the capturable areas floating in the void and you travel directly between them (although having said that, these areas are larger and more varied in shape and layout than the simple small squares of HW). And there's not much in the way of scripted events during gameplay - the win condition is always the same (capture enough territory to make the big boss appear, kill the boss), with only a small number of levels having any departures like "capture these specific areas to weaken a boss" or suchlike. It does have a nice variety of playable characters with some cool combos to pull off, the combat is fun aside from the lock-on problem, and the system they have with some areas being worth more "territory points" than others adds a unique twist not present in HW, but it might still feel a little spartan compared to that game. In terms of game mechanics, anyway. If we're talking about story, I hope you're ready for half an hour of dialogue or more in between each level :v:

If you are a Fate fan then there's plenty here to interest you, with four main story routes and a collection of side missions for each playable character. If you've played Fate/Grand Order and thought "what's the deal with this Altera character, I'd like to learn more about her" then this is the game for you. If you want to run around clowning on mongrels with Gate of Babylon then knock yourself out.

Also a sequel was just announced which they're saying will have improved gameplay mechanics, plus all the characters from the first game in addition to new ones, so if this doesn't sound appealing then maybe keep an eye out for the next one instead

So I took the plunge and ordered one of those shell kits for the Switch and it looks absolutely great, but holy hell it's a massive pain in the rear end to do. Seriously, disassembling the Joycons loving sucks and putting them together is an exercise in frustration.

Now that I think more about it, "not having as much content as Hyrule Warriors" isn't necessarily that big a downside, I never even came close to beating all of adventure mode before I got tired of the game

It's a nightmare, you'll need tweezers for the 4 or 5 tiny rear end ribbon cables on each Joycon. Not only that, but once you get the back off there's another plastic piece that houses the battery and shoulder buttons which is screwed into the front plate. I thought I'd just be able to open it, rip out the guts and swap the shells but it's literally easier to detach everything and rebuild it. There's also like 9 screws per Joycon.

Tropical Freeze is one of the best games I've ever played and if they ported it to the Switch with no changes I'd buy for $60. (I sold my Wii U.)

The only sidescroller aesthetic I prefer is Rayman Legends hand-drawn look, but I know at least one person here doesn't agree.

It's not really a "lost style" like some of the other pixel art of that era, it's a style that still exists now in better fidelity.

Also, the idea of DKC graphics was sort of done in the New Super Mario Bros Wii U/Mario Maker tile set with prerendered sprite graphics... and, it was alright, the level design was good but the graphic design didn't do anything special. Contrast that with Sonic Mania or Shovel Knight which highlight the best parts of the graphic styles of Genesis/NES games, and throwing away hardware restrictions that made the games look worse, like resolution, screen width, ROM storage for frames of animation, layers of parallax scrolling, simultaneous sprites on one horizontal layer, etc.

DKC looked amazing at the time, and sort of captured the imagination of "look how good 3D games in the future will look, and you're playing a great preview of it now!" But now when better 3D models can be rendered with more frames of animation and dynamic lighting and higher resolution, the future is already here, we don't need a new game showing a vaseline covered view of the future.
