I liked the old Xcom games (like the really old ones that were brutally hard) but I didn't care for the new one really. I REALLY didn't like how the aliens spawned in clusters when you walked to a certain spot, and I didn't like how it felt like a full game would take like 50+ hours.

The Mario Xcom game looks maybe better because you have a set amount of enemies per battle, and because I can realistically finish the game if I actually like it.

I'm seeing a lot of launch Switch accessories on clearance at Target and Meijer. Probably the most interesting thing was an Afterglow LVL 1 chat communicator for $6 at Target. It won't work for Splatoon or Nintendo online but its decent for the price.

There actually are bunches of missions in Mario + Rabbids where new enemies spawn in. I haven't played the new Xcoms so I can't really compare the intensity to that. There's also an easy mode that you can trigger before any battle so you can somewhat cheese those missions if they annoy you.

It wasn't the fact that new enemies spawned that bothered me. My issue was the way you had to min/max the fights like "I don't want to move there to spawn a new cluster" etc.

I think in Rabbids it wouldn't bother me really if they handle it properly. It just irked me how they handled it in the new Xcom games because I loved in the original Xcom (which had fog of war anyway) that the aliens all were moving around behind the fog of war and there was a set amount of them.

In Mario+Rabbids all new spawns have a "oh poo poo something is spawning here" phase during the previous turn so you can move and get ready for them. I don't think they do "surprise, snake aliens out of nowhere"

My only complaint with Mario+Rabbids is it sorely needs a four-man party. With one slot locked to Mario, there's not a lot of incentive to mix-and-match the other two out of seven possible options.

You also need at least 1 Rabbid in the party which limits your composition further.

On the plus side, Rabbid Luigi is probably the best character in the game and pairs well with everyone.

If you've ever played an SRPG (e.g. XCOM, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars) and felt one way or the other about them, that's a good place to start. I was pretty neutral about the gameplay style myself until Fire Emblem Awakening came out, followed by Fates, and I supremely burnt myself out. Some people can't get enough; others can't stand it.

I wouldn't let any negative stigma against Rabbids throw you off. I mean, yeah, they're kinda obnoxious, but I feel like a lot of the hate comes from their resemblance to Minions from Despicable Me (and their shared over-saturation) and a history of subpar games.

The problem isn't that they spawn but they can spawn in the middle of your team, and they get an action before they're vulnerable. Sometimes it's not an issue and you can position easily enough to abuse the incoming Rabbid. Sometimes it's a Toad escort mission and big guys spawning in and Bound-ing away Rabbid Luigi as another dude spawns next turn close enough to join in for a Toad-whacking session. THOSE spawning Rabbids can gently caress rightoff, no matter how pro-Toad Violence I usually am. Having enemies unable to spawn in on space you control on the turn they start spawning would do wonders for cutting what little bullshit the game has going on out of it.

Otherwise, yeah, I wouldn't let how you feel about Rabbids put you for or against the game. Do you like SRPGs, and are you more interested in the mission-tactical part of those games compared to the team building- because there's a lot of surprising depth in the former and almost nothing going on in the latter.

This is me, literally my opinion about new Xcom and original Xcom is one of my favorite games. ( I also eventually got to the point of not enjoying Sonic Mania, too many lame instant deaths towards the later levels. ) What people are describing in this thread is not the same annoyance of new Xcom.

I really enjoy Mario Xcom, there is a surprising amount of depth in the movement/jumping. Just watch like 15 minutes of world 1 gameplay on a twitch stream or something. If it looks fun then buy it, if not then don't.

I felt the same about the old and new XCOMs, but Mario XCOM is good. Not having to worry about permadeath and the overworld campaign takes a lot of pressure off the combat system, which makes its simplicity less suffocating. And they removed action phases, which makes the system more exploitable. The result is that battles are short and fast-paced, so I don't find myself wishing for the granular control or sim-like realism of the originals.

Does it feel as sturdy as the original shells?

Yeah, they feel exactly like the plastic the Switch is made out of. I was worried at first because some of the reviews on Amazon said that there were issues with some things fitting due to poor molds and plastic flashing so they had to file some things down but I guess they've ended up fixing them at this point because I had no issues of the sort. They've also got the light, matte texture that Switch plastic has so I don't know if that's because they've got the same coating or it's just how the plastic is molded. Anyway, they're absolutely perfect.

Yeah I succumbed for the translucent joycon cases because I figure that if the joycons gently caress up I can just buy new ones and the switch can still be covered [I think].

Just to make sure no one is bitterly disappointed. Yes the game has been submitted, but across the games industry and every platform (save for PC) submission guidelines are very strict and it's perfectly normal for games to require a small adjustment or two before they meet all the platform rules and stability requirements.
It's a back and forth, and although we're not predicting any problems, at the same time, the nature of the work is that it wouldn't be remotely surprising.
The general rule of thumb most games studios operate under is to expect to submit to a platform at least twice (this is our second submission), but it's also not remotely uncommon to hear of 3 or 4 submissions.
So fingers crossed, and I'll keep you up to date. Including announcing a release date when everything is complete and we have it nailed down.
Just wanted to be transparent and make sure everyone knew what was going on with the realities of the situation.
Thank you for being patient with us.
Also, the game plays beautifully on the switch. So I don't think you'll be disappointed.
