What Is Tokusatsu?       By technical definition, tokusatsu (literally translated: "special filming") is any live-action production with heavy use of special effects. However, at least in the west, you will mostly hear it used to refer to two specific types of tokusatsu: Kaiju and Superheroes. You've almost certainly watched at least a few kaiju films already, though you may not know it. Godzilla was one of the granddaddies of the genre, and you'll find its influences everywhere from the Rampage video games to Pacific Rim. Superheroes may be a bit harder to describe, but is roughly what happens when you put western superheroes and kabuki theater in a blender and dump in a whole boatload of merchandising. For the average layman, the only example of Japanese-style superheroes you're going to be aware of are the Power Rangers, a series that was (and still is) adapted from footage from Super Sentai. Older superhero toku exists, but the modern template for it was mostly laid out by the Japanese adaptation of Spider-Man, which gave him a technomagical doodad to transform with and a giant robot to fight aliens in. The other big-name superhero genre is Kamen Rider, a series that has been running since 1971 (with a break in between from 1989 to 2001) about masked, sometimes bug-themed superheroes who ride motorcycles and kick monsters so hard that they explode. These days, both genres live and die on the sale of toys, with a new series coming out each year, which means a whole new line of belts and masks and shirts and collectibles to sell, both to young Japanese children who pester their parents, and to weirdos like us who spend a staggering amount of money collecting brightly-colored pieces of plastic that light up and make sounds. There are of course shows that straddle the line, or ignore it entirely. Ultraman has been around almost as long as Godzilla, the Garo series sells itself as being tokusatsu for adults, and there are an endless stream of smaller, obscure series looking to get a piece of the pie. (As well as other regions creating their own versions, such as China's Armor Hero series.) So, why watch it? There's lots of people in this thread who will give you a lot of different answers. Some like it because they find the classic special effects and convoluted plotlines charming, some started watching out of nostalgia and never really stopped, and some of us just watch because it's a series full of very pretty men very clearly having the time of their lives hamming it up in front of the camera. What should I watch first? That depends. Kamen Rider Kamen Rider Build, which has recently finished airing, is one of the best jumping-off points for the modern version of the current subgenre. Fair warning, recent Kamen Rider stuff is incredibly toyetic, and it can be a dealbreaker for some would-be fans. If you want to see where it all began and don't mind it taking a while to find its feet, you'll want to start with Kamen Rider 1971 (sometimes referred to as "Kamen Rider Ichigo"). Or, if you want to pick up with something relatively modern, fairly serious, and don't mind some rather dated special effects, you won't do wrong with Kamen Rider Kuuga, a show about the cycle of violence perpetuating violence, and also dudes in rubber suits punching each other. Super Sentai Presumably, your first stop will be Zyuranger which, while maybe not the best Sentai series ever put on television, is also the source of the original Power Rangers footage and costumes. Kyoryuger is a recent series that's also about giant dinosaur robots, and is one of the better series in the last decade. Once you've tried those two and know what you liked or disliked about them, it will be much easier for the thread to give you better recommendations. No, we don't care if they did this one show that you really liked, and no, we don't care that their subtitles are always super pretty. They have a well-documented record of mistranslating major plot points, and even when they aren't, they're 'faithful' to Japanese to the extent of often leaving entire phrases untranslated. SA Poster Burkion has put together a big-rear end post giving you a quick summary of just about every loving thing you could ever want to watch. We love and are slightly terrified of him. No seriously, this post is almost 6000 words, rest in peace you poor fuckers on mobile. Kamen Rider, Showa Era Kamen Rider 1971, 98 episodes- The original series, and all the trials and tribulations that carries. The first 13 episodes tell the story of Hongo, a super genius captured by an evil organization known as Shocker who convert him into one of their cyborg soldiers. A kindly scientist spares him from being totally modified and he breaks free, swearing to fight against Shocker and injustice across the world. Following this, Ichimonji enters the scene, a second cyborg in the style of Hongo, who was saved by the original Kamen Rider. Hongo leaves to combat Shocker overseas, Ichimonji taking up the fight in Japan in his stead. From here things take a dramatic shift, the stories growing more light hearted and silly, until midway through Hongo returns. The two would then team up off and on, Ichimonji often leaving to fight in South America, as they smash Shocker and finally Gel Shocker across 98 episodes. A truly inspirational series, you can see how the franchise evolved across its run time. It hits a bit of a slump in the Ichimonji period, as the stories grow more child friendly and safe, but Hongo's return balances the scales back out and over all, an extremely important watch for any fan of Kamen Rider. It all comes back to here, it all comes from here. Kamen Rider V3 1973, 52 episodes- Following on the defeat of Shocker, a new organization, Destron, rises up from the depths of Hell. Kazami Shiro's family is murdered before his eyes because he witnessed Destron in action, his life being saved by the intervention of the legendary Kamen Riders Ichigo and Nigo. Initially seeking revenge, he sacrifices his life to save the two cyborgs and is in turn transformed into a cyborg by them. On their sacrifice, saving Tokyo from a nuclear holocaust, Shiro takes on their legacy of justice as Kamen Rider V3, taking the fight to Destron across all of Japan. He faces off against four formidable Destron Generals, with the original Double Riders being revealed to have survived, and faces off against the questionable Riderman in the final arc. Riderman is a conflicted scientist who remains loyal to the Great Leader of Destron, but despises the final General, Marshal Armor, pulling him into conflict with V3 until the climatic end. Kamen Rider X 1974, 35 episodes- The story of Keisuke Jin, begins with the secret cult known as GOD targeting him and his father. He is shot to death after being betrayed by his fiance, but is revived as an aquatic cyborg, the fifth Kamen Rider, Kamen Rider X, by his dying father. Getting to the bottom of the betrayal and the secret of his fiance and her apparent twin, X comes into conflict with GOD over and over. He faces off against such formidable foes as Apollo Geist, King Dark, Starfish Hitler and Ant Capone in his journey for the truth of GOD and its destruction. Along the way he teams up with some past Riders, V3 even helping him obtain an upgrade. Kamen Rider Amazon 1974, 24 episodes- Amazon follows Amazon from the Amazon wielding the power of Amazon! Amazon is a Tarzan figure who was stranded in the Amazon Rain Forest as a baby. He grew up in the wilds, protecting animals and forming bonds of friendship with them without ever knowing his own name. One day, a fearsome Ten Faced Demon, leader of Geddon, arrived burning through the forest in search of the Gigi Armlet, a match for his mystical Gaga Armlet. An Incan Elder revives the young Amazon with ancient magics and tasks him with going to Japan to stop the Ten Faced Demon and retrieve the Gaga Armlet, equipping him with the fabled Gigi Armlet. Amazon arrives in Japan without knowing the language, without knowing his own name, and without knowing how to properly combat Geddon. Undaunted, with a heart full of love and justice, Amazon faces the forces of Geddon until taking the life of the Ten Faced Demon and having to face the next successor for the Gaga Armlet, the Garanda Empire and their Great Emperor Zero. Amazon is notable as the friendliest and most loving of all the Riders, who spared many of his enemies, making some of them into allies for a time. He is also simultaenously knwon as one of the most violent and brutal Riders, with a penchant for rending opponents limb from limb with his claws, fangs and slashes. Some days, at the same time. A truly unique entry in the original franchise, Amazon is the only Rider to appear in the entire 24 episode run, a first, though he is dubbed Kamen Rider due to the legacy of the five before him. It is the shortest series to date, including its spiritual successor, Kamen Rider Amazons. Kamen Rider Stronger 1975, 39 episodes- Kamen Rider Stronger is a tale of men and women of destiny and purpose. When Jo Shigeru's best friend, Goro, is killed by the mysterious Black Satan, he aligns himself with the group to be transformed into one of their cyborg monsters. This was just a ruse, as once the operation was mostly complete, leaving only his hands permanently exposed as live metal coils and his mind unaltered, he broke free to begin his quest of revenge against Black Satan. In his escape, he discovered a young woman, Misaki Yuriko, in the midst of being transformed as well. Freeing her in a much earlier stage of surgery, the two become the Seventh Rider, Kamen Rider Stronger, and Electric Wave Human Tackle. They take the fight against Black Satan and its dangerous commanders, including the prideful Mr. Titan and the honorable General Shadow. For a time, the series becomes a three way struggle between Stronger, Titan and Shadow, until ultimately Titan falls, Shadow betrays Black Satan, and Stronger seemingly kills the Great Leader. From the wreckage, Shadow returns with the Delza Army, staffed by Cyber Demons from beneath the Earth. Unbeknownst to General Shadow, the true force behind the Delza Army was the same one who commanded Black Satan, who had his fingers behind the events of the Geddon and Garada Empire, behind GOD, and yes, even Destron, Gel Shocker and Shocker itself. The Great Leader returns in force, ready to strike down the world of man and recreate it in his image. The fight against the Delza Army is hard and tragic, but the final stretch of the series sees all the Glorious Seven Riders team up for the first time to take on the Great Leader and smash his ambitions once and for all. Intended to be the end of Kamen Rider, it is the only time that all of the human actors for the first Seven Riders gathered together, before Riderman's tragic passing a few short years later. The New Kamen Rider (Skyrider) 1979, 54 episodes- The New Kamen Rider, also known as Sky Rider, is at first a reboot/remake of the original series with a new gimmick but otherwise, back to basics. A young man, Hiroshi, is unable to save his friends from being violently murdered by mysterious cyborg assassins from Neo Shocker while attempting to help a scientist escape. In his attempt to save the scientist, he is mortally wounded, but revived as the flying cyborg warrior, Kamen Rider. From here he pits his strength against Neo Shocker time and again, until discovering the history before him and meeting the legendary Kamen Rider Stronger. Dubbed SkyRider, he becomes the first of a new generation of Riders, ready to carry on the fight against the Great Leader and his ever evolving schemes. Kamen Rider Super-1 1980, 48 episodes- Oki Kazuya has dedicated his entire life to space travel and exploration, to the point where he has volunteered his body to be transformed into a deep space cyborg, Super 1, by NASA. On the eve after his transformation, the installation he was converted at was attacked by the Dogma Empire, a group of cyborgs who believe that only the strongest should survive. His support destroyed, having no access to the complex computers that allowed him to use his great powers, Oki masters martial arts and the Sincere Shaolin Fist. This grants him total control over his new mechanical form, and with its power, avenge the scientists of the program. He destroys Dogma with his power, only to then come across the true power behind then, Jin Dogma. Pitting all of his skill and power, he must combat their greatest warriors, including Shabonurun, the Soap Themed Cyborg Monster. Truly terrifying foes await! The second series to feature no past Kamen Riders, as the original 8 seemingly died stopping the Great Leader for good at the climax of Sky Rider, though this would be disproven with Super-1's movie where the 9 Riders would join together. Kamen Rider ZX 1984, Movie- The birth of the 10th Rider, Kamen Rider ZX! Young man is captured and converted by Badan to be the host for the Great Leader, rebels and joins the original 9 Riders to combat Badans forces and save the world. Is expanded on greatly in the manga Kamen Rider Spirits, which heavily goes into each of the preceding Riders and goes in depth on ZX himself. Kamen Rider Black 1987, 51 episodes- Every century, a perfect alignment occurs where a child is born under the black sun of an ominous eclipse. This eclipse marks the child as the potential successor to the Creation King, making them the Century King. In the 20th century, two Kings were born, Nobuhiko and Kohtaro, destined to be pitted against one another for the role of Creation King. To this end, the Creation King's cult, Gorgom, kidnap the boys on their 19th birthday and convert them into grasshopper mutants. Their powers are further augmented with the implantation of the Kingstone, which only a Century King can have. Kohtaro's adoptive father saves him from being fully converted, but is unable to save Nobuhiko, setting the two brothers to face off against one another on the day of destiny, when the Eclipse returns and the Creation King dies. Kohtaro uses his newfound powers, rebuking the name of Black Sun, and becomes Kamen Rider Black to destroy Gorgom and attempt to save his brother. Who, in turn, assumes the power and mantle of Shadow Moon, losing his humanity to assume godhood. Between the two are the Three Great Priests of Gorgom, and the failed Century King from a previous era, Bilgenia. A tale of tragedy and destiny, marred only by the head writer quitting the show at the second episode due to the stress of managing the revival of the franchise. Roughly half of the episodes are filler, and I have personally created an episode guide if you wanted to skip the chaff and go with the story as it should have been. Request and I will share. Notable for having some of the best monster of the week designs and suits in the franchise, and one of the most well known and well loved in the history of the show across the world. Kamen Rider Black RX 1988, 47 episodes- Some amount of years after the climatic finale of Kamen Rider Black, the Crisis Empire comes from another dimension to take the Earth and its resources for itself. They identify the former Century King, Kamen Rider Black, as the key to stopping them and attempt to recruit him to their side. When he refuses, they attempt to kill him, only to end up mutating his powers beyond what they had been previously, further transforming him into Kamen Rider Black RX! Kamen Rider Black RX isn't much of a sequel to Black, and has more in common with Metal Heroes of the era, but is a fun light hearted romp for what it is featuring RX taking on the monsters of Crisis and, in the final episodes, teaming up with the 10 Kamen Riders that came before him and discovering that the true force behind Crisis was the Great Leader himself. Featuring light sabers, showers of sparks, truly elaborate monster suits and designs, and very colorful villains, RX stands unique in the history of Rider, though it did not fare well and brought the revival to a close once more. Shin Kamen Rider Prologue 1992, Movie- The revival of Kamen Rider for an adult audience. Ishinomori finally fully realizes his intentions of having a truly monstrous Kamen Rider on the screen in this tale of intrigue, experiments, and no one really saw it or cared. Too boring, to little happened, and too much nonsense, Kamen Rider Shin has perhaps the worst reputation of the franchise. It stands as a footnote in history, as the concept of Shin would be explored again to better effect with Kamen Rider Gils, and spiritual successors, Kamen Rider Amazons. Kamen Rider ZO 1993, Movie- 60 minutes of distilled Kamen Rider made by the man who would create Garo. ZO combats an evil spider lady brought to life through stop motion animation, an ugly bat monster, and an evil superior Grass Hopper Monster not unlike Shin, but even more monstrous. The first Bandai co production, the only thing that kept it from getting a series was right disputes. A largely forgotten gem of Kamen Rider history, it is and was everything Rider could be described as done in an hour. Kamen Rider J 1994, Movie- Billed as the Modern Double Riders, J complimented ZO by basically having the same design, just greener. Much more light hearted and silly, J is lead around by his magical grasshopper friend and is empowered by the Earth to stop the evil Fog Mother from doing something or other to the environment or something. He grows giant at the end because Ishinomori always wanted a Kamen Rider to do that. That's really all he's remembered for, being the Tall One. Has some neat monsters he fights though! Kamen Rider Kuuga 2000, 49 episodes- The Rider for the Next Century, Ishinomori's final concept and series, put into production just before his death in 1998. A tomb was uncovered, releasing a hateful, murderous force known as the Grongi. Within the tomb, a mysterious artifact is discovered. Godai, a young man who wishes for everyone to smile, is drawn to the artifact by a power he cannot explain. When the police precinct is under attack by a spider-like horror who is slaughtering everyone in his way, Godai puts on the artifact, a strange belt, and is transformed into the mighty warrior known as Kuuga. Using the power of Kuuga, Godai battles the mysterious and blood thirsty Grongi, trying to uncover the mystery of why they're murdering people, and what their death games are for. All the while, the power of Kuuga continues to unravel mystery after mystery, with a dark secret hidden at its core. The revival of Kamen Rider that had been a decade in the making, Kuuga shattered expectations and ensured the longevity of the franchise to this day. With nothing but a thumbs up and a smile, Godai will fight for our happiness, even at the expense of his own. Praise him, witness him, No Fear, No Pain! Kuuga! Kamen Rider, Post-Ishinomori/"Heisei" Era Kamen Rider Agito 2001, 51 episodes- Agito shows us the story of three men facing the Unknown. A group of angelic beings working to maintain God's order have begun killing people, as two very different men suddenly develop great power. One gains control over the power called Agito, exhibiting control and poise in tune with his domestic life. The other goes out of control, becoming the wild organic Rider Gills whose destiny is steeped in tragedy. The last man, a simple police officer, is part of the experimental power armor program, G3, to try and keep up with the new lifeforms and Unknown that appear. The three men clash time and again as they unravel the mysteries that bind them together, and figure out what the Unknown are truly after. Kamen Rider Ryuki 2002, 50 episodes- There is a world beyond our own. A world you can only find through a mirror. Within these mirrors are monsters, seeking people to devour, or, in some cases, make a contract with. A battle royal rages beyond the experience of man as people bonded to monsters, calling themselves Kamen Riders, fight to be the last one standing. A single perfect wish is waiting to be granted that can control time and space itself and bend it to your whim. All kinds are invited. Kamen Rider 555 2003, 50 episodes- A world held in the grip of a corporation known as Smart Brain. They are turning the dead into monsters, Orphnoch, to take power for themselves. A young man, former heir to a future untold, was nearly killed and rose as the Horse Orphnoch, but he is not the Rider of this time. The Rider of this tale is the mysterious Takumi, who happens to be one of the only men alive to be able to use the FIAZ GEAR to transform into Kamen Rider Fiaz and battle Smart Brain. Other Rider Gear systems are deployed against him, and it becomes a battle of miscommunication to see who will control the future. Oh and it doesn't really end unless you watch a spin off thing made like, years later, that wildly misremembers very important plot beats like how much of a dick a certain character was. Kamen Rider Blade 2004, 49 episodes- At the dawn of civilization, a race of immortal monsters known as the Undead fought to see whose kind would dominate the planet and obtain supreme power. Through some untold method, the Human Undead was the last one standing, sealing away the others. The seal has been broken, and now the Rider System has been brought out by BOARD to stop the Undead from beginning their game again and ending the world. Kenzaki becomes Kamen Rider Blade, just before BOARD is attacked by the Undead and destroyed. Who released the Undead, can he work with his fellow Riders in stopping them, and will the world survive? Kamen Rider Hibiki 2005, 48 Episodes- To us, there are heroes. They are the Oni, warriors who fight with music to combat horrific monsters and protect the world. A truly unique and interesting series that half way through Inoue shoves his fat face into and runs into the ground. Watch as Hibiki trades drum sticks for toy swords to sell more merchandise! Behold a series that no one was happy with the changes made to, that even the main star called out as bullshit at the time of filming! Just watch the beginning half and dream of what could have been. Dream of a time where, to us, there were heroes. Kamen Rider Kabuto 2006, 49 episodes- Behold the story of a man! A man who rose up in the aftermath of an alien invasion by the Worm! A man who created his own Rider powers from the future in an alternate reality! He is the man that walks the path of heaven, to rule everything! And apparently the path of Heaven is really confusing and you get lost pretty quick because whoo boy does the show not know what to do and kind of meanders around aimlessly for a long while as the most over powered main character does whatever he feels like doing so long as the writers let him. Really good looking Rider suits though! Like, really gorgeous designs. Kamen Rider Den-O 2007, 49 episodes- The present is under attack from the future! Time displaced ghosts known as Imagin travel back to the present to forge links to the past to alter the future and take power for themselves. The main character takes on multiple Imagin, bonding with them to combat the others and save the main timeline from being destroyed. Also it's really slapsticky and has a lot of multiple personality quirk jokes and is just super light hearted. It also kind of loses the plot for a while, and never really has much of a point. But hey! If you want goofy Rider action of some loser trying to fight with a mop, this is your stop. Also time traveling trains! Kamen Rider Kiva 2008, 48 Episodes- In the 1980s, a violinist comes across a vast conspiracy involving Vampires and Monsters and falls in love with the Vampire Queen. He inspires her to be more than what she is and the two sire a child together. Joining forces with a werewolf and the Vampire Hunter IXA armor, he takes on the corrupt and evil Vampire King, ultimately saving the world by becoming Dark Kiva himself and putting an end to the Vampire King at the cost of his own life. And then some poo poo no one wants to talk about happened like, 22 years later. Kamen Rider Decade 2009, 31 episodes- In the words of the series- Kamen Rider Decade, Has No Story. That's why the man to do it isn't just one man, but two. The Two in One Detective, Kamen Rider W/Double. Phillip and Shotaro Henshin together to make the perfect detective karate bug man and fight Dopant abusing criminals and scum. At the heart of the Dopant Memory ring is the Crime Family of Futo City, whose connections run deeper than the scars across the heart of this beautiful town. A rogue police detective with his own unique Memory Driver, a mysterious bandaged woman, a crazed dopant abusing doctor, and the mysterious Foundation X all lay at the center of this sort of noir story. Hard boiled action mixed with soft boiled characters turns out just right. If you want the eye of Modern Rider as it exists now, this is where to start. Now then, let's count up your sins. Kamen Rider OOO 2010, 48 episodes- Strap in, and then unstrap, and then half strap in again for a very incomplete thing. What was to be a dark tale of a soldier with PTSD getting the power to wield greed incarnate to fight Greeed incarnate with a literal devil on his shoulder got interrupted by some nasty Earthquakes in the real world, resulting in something that isn't quite sure what it wants to be, but does its level best regardless. Eiji is a man without ambition, without want, without need. All he seeks is to help others and to offer them a hand. So when a floating hand gives him the power to become a super hero, he has literally no idea what he's doing and just flails around. Meanwhile, there's a lot of super serious goofy people that shout things and one of them is the best Cake Boss to ever boss cakes. WONDERFUL! Kamen Rider Fourze 2011, 48 episodes- It's Space Time! The second space Rider is here and, no, he never meets Fourze. However he is also the second best friendship Rider, and he does meet Number 1 Friendship Rider Amazon, so it all works out. Gentaro is a man who wants friends and will do whatever it takes to make you his friend. He becomes the possessor of the Fourze Driver, and uses the power of space to beat friendship into everyone and everything he can while attending the only highschool exclusively staffed by super villains. Armed with one of the ugliest suits in the franchise, Fourze is one of the best light hearted series you will find. And the only one still in highschool! Kamen Rider Wizard 2012, 53 episodes- You're a Rider, Harry! Kamen Rider Wizard has one of the greatest finales in all of Rider, where the main hero becomes a dragon to fight an immortal Phantom across the planet and into space, before kicking him into the sun itself so that he will die and be reborn forever. Shame there's 30 more episodes after that. Armed with one of the coolest suits in the franchise, Wizard is one of the most boring series ever to be committed to memory, and nothing but a waste of time and space. Come for the sun kicking magic using coat having awesome suits, stay for the repetition and bad plot lines. At least the Lady Rider this time doesn't die? Kamen Rider Gaim 2013, 47 episodes- There is a world beyond our own. A world you can only find through a tear in the world. Within these tears are monsters and fruits, seeking people to devour, or, in some cases, to be devoured by. A battle royal rages beyond the experience of man as people bonded to fruits, calling themselves Kamen Riders, fight to be the last one standing. A single perfect okay so it's Ryuki again, but with fruits, and a possibly even worse final episode? Also a lot more power ups. A loooot more power ups. Rider War! Kamen Rider Drive 2014, 48 episodes- Drive Hard, For Justice! Some one should have said that anyways. Some rear end in a top hat made a bunch of robots, and then a robot to fight the robots, and then made himself a robot and used that to give some one the power of a car to fight other robots. Better than it sounds, though how it will stand to the scrutiny of time is still to tell. Fun designs, fun gimmicks, great villains, at least A Good Hero, it's almost the Double for a new age. A new age of five years later but whatever. Almost. Kamen Rider Ghost 2015, 50 episodes- Do you want to watch a show with INFINITE POTENTIAL? Ask Strix what's good about this otherwise don't bother me. Hoodies and ghosts oh my, shame about the nothing happening and the wheels spinning. Still a better story than Decade! If you dig the suit design and don't mind nothing much going on, give it a shot. Not like it's gonna kill you. Kamen Rider Ex-Aid 2016, 45 episodes- GAME START! What do you get when you take 1990s aesthetics, doctor melodrama, video game antics, and the Genius God that is Kuroto? You get a show that's better than it has any right to be! Just, stick it through the first 11 episodes. They're a bit rough. Freshly ended at the time of this writing, any real ruminations will have to wait as history settles on just how many great ways to describe Ex-Aid! Kamen Rider Build 2017, ?? Episodes- The Double For A New Age! Design wise, anyways. The final Heisei Rider series, the end of an era. What does Double hold in store? We will have to find out! Get excited, get ready, do your math and settle in! Pray it doesn't tank! Super Sentai Goranger 1975, 84 episodes- Created to compete with Kamen Rider Stronger, Ishinomori took a very different direction. Instead of heroes who were altered to have superpowers, they were a paramilitary group commissioned by the UN to combat terrorists across the world. The terrorist group, Black Cross, is led by the Black Cross Fuhrer to crush the peace of the world and throw the planet into chaos. The success of Goranger was crushing, eclipsing Kamen Rider Stronger in ratings and lasting for nearly full two years before drawing to a close. The Go Rangers were skilled agents and spies, and won the day through teamwork and cooperation. The tone of GoRanger was notably much lighter than Kamen Rider, and struck a cord with the younger audience tuning in at the time. Multiple GoRangers would be replaced for one reason or another, and the tradition of winning over an enemy to the side of the heroes would begin with Cyborg Q. The first live action team based series, GoRanger set the stage for a franchise that would inspire works such as Sailor Moon, and many, many more. It was the beginning of the Sentai series! JAKQ 1977, 35 episodes- Only for it to come crashing down here. The last Sentai series and the last Super Sentai series created by Ishinomori, JAKQ is the story of Interpol going to war with CRIME, an international crime organization that utilizes humans turned into monsters in its schemes. To compete, a special program is started in Japan, JAKQ, where four youths are turned into cyborg super spies to combat the CRIME organization. JAKQ was a marked departure from GoRanger, far more serious and with less fantastical elements. Due to this, it lost the eye of the youth of Japan and, even when it shifted gears midway to make things more kid friendly and inviting, with the introduction of BIG ONE, it failed. So closed the door on the Sentai franchise. Battle Fever J 1979, 52 Episodes- Only for that door to burst open two years later with the arrival of SUPER SENTAI, BATTLE FEVER J! Battle Fever J adopted the mindset of the earlier Japanese Spider-Man, featuring a costumed hero who fights monsters, and when the monsters go giant sized, they summon a super robot to fight them there. Originally meant to be Japanese Captain America, the deal with Marvel was altered and instead it transformed into its own original concept. Well mostly. The Secret Society EGOS has arisen, threatening the security of the world. To combat Egos, the Battle Fever program begins, gathering four Japanese agents from around the world, and one American FBI agent whose father was murdered in front of her by EGOS. This is the beginning of what would be known as Super Sentai, denoted by the inclusion of the giant robot element. Notably, this is Machiko Soga's first appearance in Sentai, as Death Mask. Her next major role would be... Denziman 1980, 51 episodes- As Queen Hedrian of the Vader Clan, who has sworn vengeance against all the world! The Vader Clan, a space born group of invaders, destroyed the Denzi Star 3000 years ago, with the only remnants being the island Denzi Land. Denzi Land crashed into the Earth, and what few survivors were left spread into the population of humanity, drawing the ire of Queen Hedrian. Upon the Vader Clan's arrival at Earth, DenziLand reactivates, drawing together the five successors to the Denzi Legacy. Together they become the Denzimen, and fight the Vader Clan for the safety of the world! Villain politics hit hard in this series, as in the finale Demon King Banriki banishes her to the frozen wastes. This would not be the last the world would hear from Queen Hedrian, however, oh no. Sun Vulcan 1981, 50 episodes- Deep within the frozen wastes, Queen Hedrian's body would be recovered by the Black Solar God, revived as a cyborg to serve as the lieutenant for Fuhrer Hell Saturn of the Machine Empire Black Magma! Nature VS Machine, humanity harvest the power of the sun married with the ferocity of animals, manifest in the Land, Air and Sea heroes of Sun Vulcan! The first and only completely three man team, and the first and only all male leads, Sun Vulcan and Black Magma face off for the destiny of the world. Machiko Soga's role as the great Queen continues, and even surpasses the erstwhile leader of Black Magma, Hell Saturn. She would not return for quite a while after this, until the call for the Dinosaurs would come forth. This may mark her as the one actor who has the longest running role in Super Sentai. Bonus fun fact- one of Machiko Soga's earliest roles was as Doctor Kate from Kamen Rider Stronger, the nightmare poison expert who was a terror to all! GoggleV 1982, 50 episodes- Since before the dawn of man, the Dark Science Empire Deathdark has steered the course of discovery and intelligence! Civilizations have risen and fell due to their machinations, only now they have been discovered. Brilliant scientist Doctor Hongou creates the super human team GoggleV to fight Fuhrer Taboo and his malicious Deathdark Empire! Notable for being the last Sentai team to regularly use scarves and cloth uniforms, the beginning of the end of the original era of Super Sentai! Dynaman 1983, 51 episodes- Spandex has arrived, batters ready, begin! The final of the original style Super Sentai series, here is best to explain. Every Sentai before now featured heavy sports related imagery or ideas, including finishers being related to balls. Footballs, volley balls, the works. Sentai was aimed at younger kids than Kamen Rider had been in years past, and carried the sports theme to encourage kids to go outside and play. It culminates here, with what was originally planned to be the first Baseball themed Sentai team. The remnants of their baseball theme are evident, making it the last of the original era. The plot features the explosive Dynamen being formed to combat the sinister Jashinka Empire, a group of evolutionary beasts that pride their ability on the number of tails one has. To complicate matters, the mysterious Dark Knight appears, acting against both the Empire and the Dynamen! Bioman 1984, 51 episodes- The beginning of a new era! Super Electron Bioman! The Neo Gear Empire, created and led by the mysterious Doctor Man, has risen up to slaughter humanity and claim dominion over the world. An enigmatic giant robot collects five people and empowers them to save their world, turning them into something more than man- Biomen! Bioman is the first completely serious, though still obviously aimed at children, Sentai series. It lacks the goofier elements of Sentai past and focuses instead on super heroic action and jet fights. It is the first Sentai team to feature two women on the team, and a female Yellow Ranger. It has a proto Sixth Ranger, and was what inspired Saban to create what would become Mighty Morphing Power Rangers. It has one of the first on going plotlines in a Sentai, and one of the first to connect the Red Ranger and the lead villain in any significant way. From this point on, the monster designs and tone of Sentai would change to reflect the shift in attitude, until Turboranger. Tragedy would strike, heroes would fall, and from space, the Bio Hunter Silva would arrive to fight them all! HERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT GARO KOUGA SERIES -GARO (season 1): The one that started it all. Very good. -Byakuya no Maju: Movie that serves as an epilogue to the former. Just as good. -KIBA Gaiden: Backstory for the final villain of the series. Interesting, but skippable since it adds very little overall. -Red Requiem: Second movie, made during a dead period for the franchise. Kind of pointless in the whole scheme of things beyond adding one character to the cast. Okay at best. -Makai Senki: Second full series. Starts kind of derivative of the first, then proceeds to subvert expectations hard. Very good. -Soukoku no Maryu: Third movie that serves as an epilogue of sorts for the second series. Not as good as Byakuya no Maju, not as mediocre as Red Requiem. -Gaiden: Tougen no Fue: Movie centered around two female side kicks. Haven't watched, can't comment. RYUGA SERIES (don't share clear continuity with the previous or successive ones) -Yami o Terasu Mono: First series of the new continuity, starring a whole new cast and a whole new style. Said cast is underused at best and bad at worst and said style is terrible, leading to a bad series. -Gold Storm (Film): Only movie in this franchise, serves as the beginning for a new series. I haven't watched it, but I can't imagine it's good, considering what it comes from and what it leads to. -Gold Storm (Series): Second series of this continuity. Discards the interesting characters, sticks with the lame, adds Kamen Rider Decade as a villain. Sadly, the world doesn't get destroyed. I couldn't even finish it out of how bad it was. -Kami no Kiba: Upcoming movie to be released in 2018. Not much is known. Will likely suck. RAIGA SERIES (happen after the Kouga series, starring his son) -Makai no Hana: First series starring Kouga's son, as well as a new cast of characters, mostly a good one too, with a few returnees. It plays with your expectations, hard, and it's wonderful for it.. Absolutely recommended. -Gekkou no Tabibito: Movie that hypotethically serves as an epilogue to Makai no Hana. We have absolutely no info about it besides the title. REI SERIES (happen between the ending of the Kouga and the beginning of the Raiga series, focused on the second Makai Knight of the former) -Black Blood: Film duology turned mini-series (or backwards? I have no idea) focused on one of the coolest characters in the franchise. Includes a guy that speaks very good English and will later recieve the hilarious name of Steve Bills in Kamen Rider Ghost, as well as some interesting but ultimately pointless grey morality. Doesn't outlive its welcome, it's fun and short. Worth the watch. -Dragon Blood: Less mini, but still short series that follows the previous one. I only watched a bit of it due to not caring for the Ryuga side, but it's definitely fun and cute. ANIME (completely unconnected both to the previous series and between each other, unless stated otherwise) -Honoo no Kokuin/The Animation: First anime series, set in medieval not-Spain, as fitting for its name (it won't ever be translated as Fire Emblem but you can easily translate it as it) and focusing on a new, far more emotional GARO than before and his very perverted dad. Anime hijinks ensue, but also (and mostly) extremely serious moments including those that show exactly why GARO is given to serious people and not trauma-filled children. Probably the single best way to enter the franchise, especially if you aren't accustomed to watching toku. Just...tolerate Leon for a while, he does get better. -Guren no Tsuki: Second anime series, unconnected with the first. Replaces the talent of Yasuko Kobayashi with, of all people, motherfucking Inoue, and changes the Spanish setting to a Japanese one. As you might expect by the first point, quality goes badly down, even moreso since the amazing MAPPA animation is changed to a much more terrible style. I can't speak much of the plot, since I didn't even bother to watch it, but I've heard it's bad and with Inoue in it, I fully believe it. -Divine Flame: Movie that follows The Animation. I haven't watched it yet, I'm not sure if it's subbed, and every time I ask I don't get an answer for some reason. Maybe I should just Google it. -Third anime: Currently in production. Nothing is known, including if it follows a previous series or not. I hope that helps people choose what GARO they want to watch! If you want more detailed things...ask Burkion, I'm not a writer. I think it should be mentioned that Gaim was written by well known visual novel and anime writer Gen Urobuchi, for better or for worse, and seems to be a pretty divisive series as far as popular opinion goes.

In one episode Sento has amused me more times than Takeru ever managed to, so at this point Build would need to never amuse me again for it to be anywhere near as bad as Ghost. I've got two big things I look for in a Toku Series, either a good story or, failing that, anything amusing. This is the main reason I prefer Wizard clearly over Ghost, neither one had an interesting plot but at least Wizard got me laughing more often, even if a lot of that was the cinematographer and/or editor going insane. While I may have hated whenever they would have Haruto angst over whatever bullshit at least I felt something toward him. Ghost may have had Alain, but he had like five episodes of focus before he completed his character arc and never did anything interesting again. Build looks interesting story wise so far, but there was some serious exposition dumping going on especially at the start of the episode. I'm slightly worried that this is going to be a little too crammed with story.

I do like how Build not only brings back the whole Modified Human plotline from the Showa era but everything that goes with it as well (Ex-Aid sort of had that too but the whole surgery thing ended up not mattering all that much in the grand scheme of things). Overall a pretty interesting premiere, hopefully it can keep that level of quality up for the rest of the show.

Replaces the talent of Yasuko Kobayashi with, of all people, motherfucking Inoue, and changes the Spanish setting to a Japanese one. As you might expect by the first point, quality goes badly down, even moreso since the amazing MAPPA animation is changed to a much more terrible style. I can't speak much of the plot, since I didn't even bother to watch it, but I've heard it's bad and with Inoue in it, I fully believe it. -Divine Flame: Movie that follows The Animation. I haven't watched it yet, I'm not sure if it's subbed, and every time I ask I don't get an answer for some reason. Maybe I should just Google it. -Third anime: Currently in production. i'm not really sure what was going on with that conversation sento had with his new boss. he mentioned having amnesia and the boss is obviously part of the evil organization which induces amnesia in all of its test subjects. oddly enough, the boss was like "okay, whatever, now stare at the box while we go over the same exposition the episode started with". shouldn't someone mentioning amnesia instantly make him take notice? it's probably nothing, but it still seems odd to me.
