RE: Construction: most of coastal FL is concrete block walls with wood trussed roofing, and shingles, tar and gravel or tile. The building codes in Central FL tend to be much more lax than, say, Miami.

My folks still live just south of Miami. I think they're driving to North Carolina today/tonight. My youngest sister is staying as she's a trauma nurse in Miami-Dade.

Honestly, if I had to pick a house that wasn't a poured concrete dome to ride it out in, I'd go to theirs. Flat nail down tile, impact glass windows, clip in Aluminum shutters, and 3 feet higher than the street.

We did Andrew in 92 and had the eye wall. Long ago the decision was made of "High Cat3 or more, GTFO".

I know someone that is a truck driver for a local grocery chain (Winn Dixie) and he said on his delivery this morning a bunch of people swarmed his truck asking for water but he had none. So the next truck pulls up and they swarm that truck, and the dumbass truck driver says yeah I have water. Huge fight ensues, cops arrived and fighting continued, arrests were made.

Every time we have a hurricane potentially coming towards us this always happens and it's getting loving old. People are freaking out a week before the storm touches land, this storm track has steadily moved east in the last few days but people are still freaking out like were gonna take a direct hit. On the current track we might get tropical storm force winds and a little rain maybe. And now the whole east coast is on alert because the forecast keeps moving east

My water heater has 50 good, usable gallons of water. RO system has another 5 I can grab and go with. Also fill tubs and stuff (though that doesn't help if it floods up high or sewer system backs up).

Also I live in Phoenix so none of this applies but back up in Idaho that's what we did when we got snowed in or the city's pipes froze.

Has anyone had any experience with Monster Transmission? I recently bought a 2005 Silverado 1500, 2wd, 5.3L (aluminum block in place of the stock 4.8L), with a slipping transmission (4L65E) from my friend for $1700. Every local shop I've called wants to pull the trans for me and rebuild it to a ballpark of $3500-4000 or else they wont warranty the rebuild. That or the warranty is reduced to 30-90 days depending on the shop. I'm planning on pulling the transmission and either spending a bunch of extra time rebuilding it, possibly loving it up, and not having a warranty but saving around $1k, or Getting the Monster heavy duty 500hp transmission for about $1600 after core charge.

My experience with automatics (especially longitudinal American stuff) is that 'pull a random trans from the cheapest junkyard, install, drive till it explodes, rinse, repeat' is the most reliable solution. I'd trust an OEM build with an unknown history over an unknown build every day of the week.
or hell, a new one from the General himself can be had for under $2k.

Also, put an NV3500 (or NV4500 if you're planning on doing crazy poo poo) in it because automatics are bad and NV3500 GMT800s are fun

No clue but literally 10 seconds on eBay I see trans for $700 as pulls to $1500 rebuilt explore your options. He'll find a pick and pull and get one for a few hundred bucks. They are smoking crack asking $3500+ to rebuild one of the most common trans

I live in the town monster is based in and my boss used to run their warranty department. It used to be an excellent company who made great quality stuff. Now the owners son has forced the owner out and is slowly destroying the business, they have a disgusting turnover rate in the shop since they don't pay worth a dick for entry level and there was a recent issue with the owner firing the entire sales department after a video of one of their transmissions rated for 600+hp grenading behind a NA LS3 on a dyno went viral. Part of the reason was they refused to warranty it saying the shop must have installed it improperly. Like literally case splitting grenading. Installation does not cause that.

They buy their parts from transtar and use florida torque converters for their torque converters. Tbh find a shop near you that uses transtar parts and you'll have a comparable trans that'll cost less.

$3500 is crazy. I have a 2001 1500 with a 4l60e had it rebuilt with a 3yr/50k warranty for $2250 last month. I don't know what the extra 5 is but it seems fishy that it's twice as much to rebuild.

Yeah, if you shut off the incoming water to the tank, and open the hot water taps inside the house, you can drain the tank itself (there's a hose bib meant to drain sediment out of the tank).

If you haven't opened it regularly, be prepared for it to leak afterwards (also you're gonna get tons of sediment).

(crack that thing open a couple of times a year and drain the sediment..)

The 65 is slightly beefier, and replaced the 60. Guessing you have an early build 01 if it had the 60 (or Hotrod has their info wrong)? AFAIK the 96+ 60 and all 65s are interchangeable, though there's no reason to use a 60 if you have a 96+ and have a 65 available to you.

From Hotrod Magazine:

quote:

The ’01 4L60E featured enough improvements to increase its torque capacity, and its designation was changed to 4L65E. The main improvement of interest to hot rodders is the 4L65E’s five-pinion planetary carrier that replaced the 4L60E’s four-pinion. More pinion gears help to spread the load, allowing 4L65E transmissions to handle more torque than their 4L60E brethren. Additionally, a better 3-4 clutch, improved input shaft, and a deeper pan for more fluid were added.

I flush the HW tank once a year with a hose. There's a reason the emergency drain bib has a hose threading on it.

Take the screen off of one of your faucets, close the HW tank inlet, hook the hose up and turn it on, and run the hot water on that faucet.

The emergency drain is usually down low, so the pressure from the hose stirs up the sediment and flushes it out.

WARNING WARNING WARNING

like an automatic transmission, anything older than 5 years since the last flush should be left alone. That sediment could be the only thing holding it together, literally.

(and can't post for 11 years!)

On the other hand, if it's a gas water heater, that sediment could be the reason it costs a fortune for your hot water heater to run.

Electric tanks typically have 2 heating elements on the side of the tank; gas has it at the bottom. An electric tank won't give a gently caress about the sediment at the bottom; it winds up reducing the volume of the tank slightly. But a gas tank will have that layer of sediment acting as a thick insulating blanket.

If you hear a gas water heater knocking when it's heating, it's because you have a bunch of sediment at the bottom of it.

I rent, and have an electric 40 gallon tank sitting outside (it's in a closet on my patio) in a place that does zero preventive maintenance, so I have zero reasons to give more than zero fucks. If it ruptures, it's not going to flood inside, but it might scald anyone standing on the patio under mine if they happen to be standing right at the edge when it pops. But if I somehow wind up without running water, it'll be the first place I go to get water.
