I'm guessing the kid is adopted and is a young bloody face because he doesn't have his father. My hunch is that the clowns are actually related to Ally. She's nutty because her childhood was tangled up with the clown cult somehow. That's why their masks seem specifically tied into her phobias.

First episode was okay. Not the most riveting opener the show has ever had, but not the worst. Hopefully it does the thing where the season gets better as it goes on, and not the thing where it spirals into trash (Coven, Freakshow) On the upside, it should be a loving incredible Halloween episode. Called Shot: Twisty the Clown comes back on Halloween (as ghosts are allowed to do and Twisty is hanging out with that back-of-head-face-circus-guy-ghost) and straight up murders either some cult people or some murder clowns.

One would hope the clown cult worships Twisty. Otherwise why bring him back tbh e: isnt peters supposed to play a bunch of cult leaders or smth this year? i bet that's the halloween ep

I've said this in AHS threads before, but one of my favorite aspects of this show is the send ups. In this episode I got some very strong Zodiac vibes from the Twisty scene. All of the clown gang scenes were very much like The Purge, and the scene with the clowns in the neighbor's house sort of reminded me of Funny Games or The Strangers. Any other horror movie nods in this one that I may have missed?

The Twisty scene was actually a repeat of the scene from Freak Show, just with more shooting. Though you could argue THAT was meant as a Zodiac reference.

Does having John Carroll Lynch in it mean automatic Zodiac vibes? (Not only does he play Twisty, he also played the likely Zodiac killer in...Zodiac.)

I really thought this was a pretty strong first episode. It had batshit crazy stuff, like Evan Peters humping his television, painting his face orange with crushed cheetos and seeing the election result as a sign of the coming apocalypse, and some pretty cool set ups for future scares, like Sarah Paulson's psychosis and hallucinations that you just KNOW will be used for some cry wolf moments later on where no one believes her true story. The humor reminds me a little about Scream Queens, but maybe it's just seeing Billie Lourd that takes my mind there. I laughed many times at the exaggerated characters. Like how Paulson worries about their nanny moving away right after the election and suspect she may have been deported or Chanel #3's pinky swear truth session with Evan Peters cross cut with her nanny job interview. The one thing I'm worried about is that the season will go completely off the rails and add so many spooks and subplots that it loses all suspense, as is the typical AHS fare. In three episodes time we may have werewolfes, serial killers, alien spores and rabid cyborg dogs running around.

Freakshow was great. Roanoke was great. Hotel sucked balls. Coven sucked. This is so far pretty hilarious. The election broke soooooo many brains on both sides. For some reason I feel Ally is going to get her own cult.

Spoeank posted:I legitimately zoned out every time those idiots were on screen and it was enjoyable otherwise Agreed on all accounts. But, as is usually the case with AHS, there were simply too many horses in the ring and not enough reins. I even think there wasn't anything inherently bad with any of the basic plots regarding the family, they were just very sloppily handled. All of these are plots with potential for horror and suspense:
...and they were all SORT OF justified in the plot, with the build up of the marriage falling apart because of the disappearance of Holden and the parents refusing to let go, the father eventually becoming more absorbed with his work and neglecting his family, and the mother becoming distant, even suicidal, before also seeking refuge in her work and neglecting her family. ...It's just that those are all very demanding stories to tell, for both cast, director and script, and in the ADD world building of AHS these plots were all neglected by parents absorbed with all their other plots. Good storytelling is more than just coming up with a concept. Or in Ryan Murphy's case - a thousand concepts in one story. Most seasons of AHS were built like a Twilight Zone-ish anthology show, only with all the episodes running parallell and having common characters. At least Murphy and crew are great at coming up with batshit insane concepts so you can usually enjoy the camp value, even in the worst seasons. One of the reasons I think Roanoke is possibly the best season is because it stuck to a concept. it switched up the storytelling framework a few times, but it was still about Ghosts of Roanoke tribe kiling trespassers to please immortal sex-witch. Of course, there was also the neighbors, but I think they served mostly as an in-universe explanation of why leaving was as dangerous as staying behind.
