Sorry, guy.
KInd of a rando question, but with mentions of Apple TV "app" and other stuff that is coming to light with iTunes for the new 4k ATV... is there any way I can watch 4k content on my iMac Retina?

I would imagine 4k versions of movies would be available on the iTunes Store but then again who knows it's Apple so you'll just have to wait and see.

Does the new one support Dolby Digital Plus?

I'm sure in a blind test I wouldn't even be able to tell the difference between that and vanilla Dolby Digital.....but I still wish I had it.

Yes. The only easy way to tell the difference is if you have a 7 channel setup, which standard DD does not support.

Beyond like YouTube and Vimeo and other streaming sites, no. Netflix and Amazon don't support 4K in web browsers and there's no app in the app store for those services. I imagine the 4K movies in iTunes might be able to be played on the iMac once they're available.

Pretty much. The last gen felt like it came out years later than planned due to all the tv deals falling apart. They should've just waited until this one was ready to roll really, but probably wanted something more competitive out there.

Did apple say when the free 4k movie upgrades would be available? I have a 4k tv and nothing to watch on it in 4k. Before I drop money on a new ATV it would be nice if one of the handful of movies I won is available in 4k.

If they were available what would you play them back on? You'd need a 4k Apple TV.

Maybe, apple seems to be restricting 4k support to kaby lake processors, skylake has hw offload for 4k hevc but doesnt have the right drm. The video card could probably handle it too but who know if apple will support that.

I'm trying to send an Apple/iTunes account for another region, and when I enter the code, I get a checkmark, and the form is deleted, and I can't move on.

Any idea what's up?

e: Now it says it's run into a problem when I go back and repeat the step. Maybe they just don't like what I submitted.

e: Same issue after I started over. Not sure if feature or bug, but I can't verify the account either way.

This new ATV is seriously making me consider returning my Shield. I know it lacks some features that a lot of people would like to see (mainly bitstream/HD audio) but:

-My TV now has Steamlink built in (Samsung)
-I don't have a NAS with BluRay rips, so HD audio doesn't really matter at all since no streaming service uses HD audio
-This is the big one: Free 4k upgrades and same-as-HD priced movies/rentals,especially when everyone else is sitting around $30, this is especially true if pack-in codes can be redeemed as UHD (if available)
-Overall I've been pretty meh about the Shield, especially the remote that seems to randomly hiccup/lag at times.

I never thought I'd lock myself into iTunes for streaming, but it might just happen.

It'd still require iOS devs, developing mainly for iPhones/iPads (touch-interfaces), to develop something almost completely separate for the tvOS app store.

Not saying it can't be done but it'd require a shift on the part of developers.

Plus there's still no pack-in controller so developing an amazing game that requires more than the Siri remote is still targeting a tiny minority of ATV owners.

I bought some Blu-rays in one country with redeemable iTunes codes. I want to create an Apple account for that region and redeem them.

When I set up such an account, the last step seems to bug out, as it "accepts" my e-mail validation, but then resets the validation code field and doesn't continue past that.

You have to provide a billing address in that region to do that.

Following up my own inquiry: I spoke to one of the fine blue polo shirted folks at the Apple Town Square last night and they confirmed that Amazon Prime Video will be an app in the app store. It won't, according to him, be linked to the Apple TV 4K.

I'm guessing since there's an existing iOS app, that'll just get updated to work on TVOS as well.

Yay.

I think he's correct but there's no way a lowly retail worker knows what's Apple and Amazon's streaming and app plans are more than you or I do. They just read the same rumor blogs that we do.

That guy works for Imagination Technologies, who created the PowerVR GPU that's been in all iOS devices up until the iPhone 8.

The ATV 5th Generation uses the A10X Fusion chip, which means it's got nearly the graphics power of an iPhone 7, which still is a PowerVR chip. (I say nearly because I don't know if it's running at the same clock speed as the 7, but I'd bet it's downclocked because Apple loooooves to downclock GPUs, see any ATI video chip on the Mac side.)

We shall see, but I somehow doubt there'll ever be a 'great' game on the ATV, regardless of generation.

Edit: if gaming were REALLY a priority to Apple, they would have shoved in the A11X Fusion, as Apple claims their new GPU is 30% faster than the one in the iPhone 7.

I've not looked into iOS 11 much, but why wouldn't you need the remote app with it?

Edit: Google it duh. So it is going to be built in the control center.

Edit 2: I am debating if I should get up at 3am and order the AppleTV 4K (something I haven't done since the iPhone 5), or just ordering it at 7am when I actually get up. I am sick of the FireTV in my bedroom, and I want to put my current AppleTV 4th gen up there (but I need this first).

I would be very surprised if you needed to get up early. I'm still happy to wait for other people's experiences with Plex on it before I jump, as Plex's capabilities are the most important for me and I'm feeling pretty let down with their media player recently.

Yeah, its not great at handling a few formats. Some transport streams, but in particular if you remux a bluray with 2 reference frames it'll playback as a right mess. There's a long discussion on their forum about it, and it seems it's not just limited to the ATV version of the software.

I would've pegged the problem with the Plex server side software rather than the AppleTV.

Does the ATV4K do something that might change that (I know poo poo about formats, codecs and the like).

Prob the thing I'm most excited about with iOS 11. That app gets a ton of use from me (either controlling ATV directly or Airplaying a shared iTunes library to 1 or more devices) and it'll be sweet to have that stuff on an OS level.

On the downside, my old 5c that I sometimes use as a dedicated remote can't get iOS11! But I suppose control center integration will give me less need for a dedicated extra thing anyway.

These files are direct streaming, so in theory it should be the player side. Other platforms (but not all) don’t experience it. It’s avoidable at least by either having a second system that you use, or by forcing a transcode. It’s just not ideal.

With regards to the 4K, I’m just waiting to see how the handful types of files out there work on it, if at all. My xbone S doesn’t support anything I’ve tried, it forces a transcode to 264. Same with my tv which can play these kinds of files off a stick, but not in Plex.

Nothing, I'm also a non 4K TV owner, don't have an ATV4, and am hot and heavy for one.

Although in your case you are likely hot and heavy for that A10X Fusion goodness that will enable your ATV4K to kick rear end over your old ATV4. I'd bet good money it responds and performs faster in everyday usage.

I still doubt anyone will take advantage of that GPU power that's supposedly beefier than a docked Switch, PS3, or Xbone 360.
