That was the episode after Nov 8th 2016. Season 19 was pretty good.

The show has been pretty solid until last season when they tried to do heavy continuity without changing how they make the show.

Probably could have been funny if they went whole hog and wrote all of it together, made all of it together, but doing it week to week while juggling a bunch of threads made the show really kinda loving suck

I've always liked the show, but it's pretty disappointing that they're openly backing out of political satire at the one moment in the show's history where the rest of the world has essentially become a cartoon. It seems lazy, but I can't really speak until I've seen the season. It's also a little frustrating because the comparison between pop-culture :member: nostalgia and authoritarian yearning for the imagined past was very clever.

they're probably feeling like satirizing this stuff would be lazy as poo poo, because everyone else does it. it would make most of comedy central's lineup hot centrist political takes and that would be loving boring

Yeah, and? This will likely be similar to the Crab People episode or any other episode where Randy gets way too caught up in something. In other words, we're starting on a high note.

Previous Randy episodes include "Creme Fraiche" and "Medicinal Fried Chicken." Also, U2 is on tour so don't forget "More Crap"

Oh and "Cock Magic"

Hell, "With Apologies To Jesse Jackson" could have a similar summary.

They might still have loose continuity like the few seasons before that had.

It's going to be a good season I think.

Also with The Fractured BUTTHOLE coming out on October 17, probably will be some tie ins to that at some point.

It's a piece of JUNK!
Clearly, reports of them "not doing politics anymore" have been grossly exaggerated. I really think they just meant "we're not going to plan entire episodes around whatever Trump did this week" rather than "we're not going to criticize what's going on under the Trump administration at all".

Plus they've been claiming "kids just being kids" episodes are their favorites for like 10 years now, and they still almost never do it

I've never heard anything about them not doing political episodes, but I'm not sure why anyone would believe they would stop doing episodes based on current events. And pretty much anything on a current event is going to have a political aspect to it, or at least idiot goons thinking that there is some political bias to the episode.

Exploration is ill-advised.
Serialisation is one thing, keeping up with current events is another thing, but trying to do both at once was a recipe for disaster.

All summer I saw posts and thinkpieces reacting to interview comments where they said they're not planning to spend much time on Trump this season. Which people interpreted as them abdicating their responsibility and chickening out, or even being afraid to alienate "South Park Republicans".

I think it's pretty clear that they just see constant reactions to Trump as a creative dead end for them. As well as being a tad soul-crushing. Nothing wrong with that.

Stare-Out
Mar 11, 2010

Apparently they're going back to episode-per-episode stories with slight continuity when they feel like having it. Towards the end of the last season they got tired of trying to keep plotlines going (Kyle even commented how much it sucks in one of the later episodes) and they also said there's hardly any point in making fun of Trump anymore and they want to go back to stuff like Cartman dressing up like a robot and loving with Butters from now on.

I'm okay with that, I couldn't even finish the last season.

Well... not spending time on trump doesn't mean they aren't going to have anything political in the show. They don't actually need to do much with Trump, they pretty much covered everything on Trump the last 2 seasons.

Just give me single episodes like we had for the first ten seasons or so and don't be too preachy or try too hard to use the show as a vessel to express political or cultural beliefs.

"Cartman tries to create a racket to make $10M by stealing tooth fairy money" is much more fun than "Cartman reminds us he hates the Jews Part 50".

Season 18 was hands down one of my favorite seasons in years! Maybe because it had a nice balance of the new continuity format while still telling standalone stories? Loved season 19 as well! One ongoing arc while still telling a few different stories. I don't know what happened with season 20 though. Where did it all go wrong?

Here's hoping this season is more like 18 and 19! Or 17, that was a good year too.

Season 20 was going well until they went all in on Clinton winning the election. Once Trump won it destroyed anything they were trying to do :(. But it was also probably bad trying to do a whole season based around the US election anyway.

Season 20 was tough cause it was coming off the amazing Season 19 and then like you said got completely derailed by Trump winning. Still really looking forward to tonight.

Yeah you get a taste of what they had in mind with the episode the day after the election.

then the last two were clearly massive rewrites and it just concluded what it had but its clear that wasn't the original end game.

Season 20 was garbage even before Trump won halfway through, and honestly I'm not at all excited for this because I don't think South Park as it has existed really has a place in a post-Trump world. I'd like to be proven wrong though.
