I have been thoroughly unimpressed by this episode (though the kitchen wall bit and Cartman immediately going back to "uuuuuuuuuugggh" when he was trying to act abused to Heidi made me chuckle), but that last bit was interesting and they're either gonna stick the landing or gently caress it up by I dunno having the confederate flag guy be super tolerant or whatever.

"Stunning and Brave" I will defend this episode because yo, gently caress Caitlyn Jenner, Cartman idolizing Tom Brady is hilarious, and the punchline of "you have your cake, eat it too" is loving transcendent. 18. "Go Fund Yourself" The Washington Redskins episode. It fuckin owns. 17. "Let Go Let Gov" Meh, but the punchline of the NSA have kidnapped Santa Claus and hooked him up to a computer and the average American just doesn't give a poo poo is pretty incisive. This? This isn't good satire or comedy. This is limp and unfocused.

This honestly felt like they responded to the serialization not working out by cramming the same amount of plot lines into one episode. It just felt like a loosely assembled collection of decent jokes wrapped around nothing in particular. It’s like the definition of .

Episode was alright, there were a lot of much better season starts, and a lot of seasons that started like this and got better, don't see any reason to complain. Loved redneck-Alexa, though.

My feeling is that they showed up at the office a week ago and this was the result. Rather than them reflecting on how bad last season was and saying, let's show up a month early and hammer out some good jokes and storylines and have a good season. So 12 weeks, 10 episodes of hoping they are inspired that week. At least South Park is back. Too bad it is no longer the best show on TV. Rick & Morty is now.

"Cletus, lower the volume!" "Adjustin' volume ter 60%." Really liked a couple jokes, and Sharon not being into the show. On every family reality show there's always one family member that's phoning it in and doesn't want to be there. Seeing Eric demolish his relationship was painful, but I think for Cartman to be Cartman he has to be the most selfish person in the room. But it wasn't a good episode. It kind of felt like half an episode but not in the "setting up the season" way. It also felt like it was going to take on a lot more than it did but they went out of their way to say "We're not touching this" which is funny in itself but it doesn't make for good television. It was two or three good jokes filled in with half-assed writing. I give it  out of Looking forward to the rest of the season though. I'm someone who really liked the silly "Took our jobs!" people, but this was just kinda bad for me. The Cartman plot felt like some weird joke to set off people who owned Amazon/Google stuff, and the rest felt like they wanted to take a political issue and try and go "See we're not being political about it", and just being kinda unfunny.

The middle was good, especially Randy's exchange with Darryl about what kind of jobs he could do. The rest was just ok. I did like how Randy literally had one idea for all home renovations -- tear down the wall between the kitchen and living room to make it open concept. Which really is half of what they do on these shows. And somehow it is also pretty much always a good idea. (They also just so happened to be doing it to a house that looked exactly like mine, a 2-story Colonial where we want to tear down that very wall  )

I thought the end was great. It was somewhat back to south park centrism, but it showed that rather than actually having solutions for problems with a nice ending, white America really just wants to push all these problems to the side (or behind nice glass cases) and get back to working on their homes and lives and watching their shows. You may not agree, but there was definitely a point being made.

Maybe it would have been too obvious, but people waiving Confederate flags are the ultimate member berries just waiting to be plucked. I read reviews on other sites, and if its true that South Park has all of these alt-right fans along with the South Park Republican/Libertarian base due to their anti-PC stance, is it possible they just didn't want to offend them? Many of the flag waving tiki torch bearing protesters weren't uneducated, unkempt rednecks, but Polo shirt wearing preppies who actually did go to college.

The answer is obvious: they didn't learn their lesson. Or only partly learned. They saw the disaster of last year and rather than taking the good ideas (a running storyline) and dropping the bad (trying to write an episode in 7 days with a coherent running plot) they have just gone back to what worked in the past. So what we got was a story that probably had another 10 minutes of material that Trey had to edit into 22 minutes and it ended up being a POS. So they learned noting and we are just back to where we have been for years. 1 week to make an episode that will be based on current events and sometimes will hit and sometimes won't. It's a pity because when they actually spend time writing things they can be quite good.

In the end they could've taken out the tiki torch thing and not really affected the episode too much. It was kind of like older South Park where they throw in a "surprisingly" current reference but aren't necessarily directly commenting on it. Whether that's something you can really "do" with Charlottesville... ehh, not sure.
