Watched a show on Netflix yesterday and I kept on messing with my picture settings thinking there was something wrong with the Dolby Vision stuff on my OLED. Didn't realize they added some film grain effects to some of their shows that makes it all the static content in each scene look pretty awful in 4k. Whyyyyyyyyyyyy (also Iron Fist is terrible).

My local Costco has OLEDs on display but they have heavy motion smoothing enabled and it kills me everytime I see it.

So, just turned on my ks8000 set and heard a speaker pop. Now the sound is still present but sounds super muffled. Is one speaker dead or something? Not sure how to fix it. Edit: messed with the one connect cord at the TV end, seems to have fixed it. Kingtheninja fucked around with this message at 00:40 on Sep 12, 2017 |

Are they dark scenes or across the entire show? As an editor, you can add noise to a dark shot if there is some noticeable stepping in the blacks which makes it look bad. I could see this looking bad on a static dark shot where they needed to brighten it up and now you see steps in the black. But I haven't seen the show you're talking about, so who knows

Every goddamned Marvel show on Netflix is artificially 'gritty' and it murders the resolution. House of Cards doesn't have any problems. It's on purpose too, for whatever goddamned reason. BIG HEADLINE fucked around with this message at 05:58 on Sep 12, 2017 |

I was in a store on the weekend and people were watching pacific rim on some sony tvs and one looked like poo poo and they were complaining about how it looked like a soap opera. I picked up the remote and said "check this out" and turned off motionflow and they were like "whoaaaaa" Pretty much have this thread to thank for that wisdom!

Yeah, "True Cinema" can help on older movies that were designed to be shown in 24p, but other than that, Motionflow does way more harm than good. What's incredibly depressing is that first-tier commercials and local news on my 930E look fantastic, but the upconversion on the *shows* sometimes make flesh look mottled and blurry.

I just wish there was a setting to make old SD 4:3 shows look good on modern TVs. I can't even watch classic Xfiles episodes on a tv anymore, I have to watch them in a window on my PC Desktop (which to be fair is where I watch most TV now)..

X-Files moved to Hulu, but they are HD there. The blu-rays are the best though.

The 4K of ET that came out yesterday looks and sounds amazing. The increased resolution is noticeable but the big stuff is lit color, like the stained glass lamp over their table (kind of like the police lights in Blade Runner).

I got my disc yesterday, but I haven't had a chance to take a look at it yet. I'm getting more and more depressed that I'm color blind though. My protanomaly means I can only see 10s of thousands of colors, not millions. The wide color gamut stuff does make a difference for me because of the saturation and I'm sure my color vision is full enough for some stuff to see the full range, but I don't get the wow effect of WCG like most people.

I want HDR in my bedroom but only have room for a 50" due to the niche it's going in. TCL has one in a 49" and Vizio M Series 50" would work as well. Which way do I go?

Any thoughts on the E70-E3? Was able to snag a floor model from Walmart for 900 bucks and hoping I didn't gently caress up.

HDR and local dimming are the biggest differences. It doesn't have as many local dimming zones, so it's more likely to bloom with bright areas in dark backgrounds. For HDR, first it doesn't get very bright. Depending on what's being displayed, the TV only gets about 1/2 to 1/6th as bright as the M series which effectively removes any HDR highlights. Second, the panel only covers the REC709 color space, not REC2020. So, there's no wide color gamut support. In short, it's a 4k TV, but it really can't be called a UHD TV. It will accept HDR10 signals, but can really only show them at SDR levels of brightness and color volume. It's a good budget TV if you are primarily viewing 1080p SDR content, but if your want HDR support for gaming and movies, not a great choice. Also, avoid the 55" as it's an IPS panel and doesn't have the black levels that the other sizes do.

Thanks for the responses everyone. The TV is for my bedroom and HDR is the primary reason for purchasing. I'll definitely make the 100 mile trip to grab the M series, which I figured I'd end up doing.

A couple noob questions about the last 10 years of HDTVs. -Was DLP really all that? -Was plasma really better than LCD? -I remember when LED backlights arrived, the idea was that LCDs wouldn't have to be edge backlit with CCFLs anymore, but it seems like LED backlighting "behind" the panel never really took off. -Are OLEDs going to happen anytime soon or is it going to be another 5 years before I can buy a 60" model for under $1000?

[/quote] 1) No 2) Yes 3) That’s not a question. But, some more expensive sets do have local dimming. 4) I think they’ll get cheaper but I don’t know if they’ll get that cheap that fast

When dlp came out it really was all that. The alternative was giant crt rp or 30" or smaller crt direct view.

Josh Lyman posted:A couple noob questions about the last 10 years of HDTVs. 1. Yes. Better color and much faster reaction times than a LCD projector could ever provide. The only downside is rainbowing, which can be minimized with a well designed color wheel or eliminated with a really expensive 3DLP light engine. 2. Definitely. OLED is basically plasma 2.0, same advantages (better colors, pure blacks) but less prone to burn-in. 3. Most nicer LCDs use backlighting rather than sidelighting. If it has zoned dimming it has backlighting. 4. Cheap OLEDs have been five years away for about 10 years now, but they're working their way down. If someone other than LG gets in to the market seriously it'll start dropping fast.

Is DLP still better than a 2017 LCD? I ask because one of my neighbors is selling a 73". Or should I just wait for OLED?

It's probably 1080i and will die soon. I had a 73" DLP. My 65" Vizio M Series blows it out of the water.

1 month later I am still trying to get Samsung to arrange a main board repair. To be fair, most of that time was spent waiting for them to call me for two weeks before bugging them again about it and being told that actually they just got word from the specialist and they said I should turn UHD Colour on in the Expert Settings! That was the closest I have ever come to losing my poo poo and yelling at a support person.

Josh Lyman posted:Is DLP still better than a 2017 LCD? I ask because one of my neighbors is selling a 73". Or should I just wait for OLED? Rear projection is dead for a reason. I was referring to front projection when I said DLP is better than LCD. Definitely do not buy a rear projection TV for pretty much any meaningful amount of money. If you have a lot of space in a game room or something and someone offers you one for near free, gently caress it why not, but if you're comparing it against a modern flat screen it's not even in the same ballpark. wolrah fucked around with this message at 16:39 on Sep 16, 2017 |
