I'm looking for some good instrumental folk/americana/alt-country/etc music. John Fahey, some Leo Kottke, and Tom Rush are along the lines of what I'm looking for, but I'd love some groups that are more than just solo guitar.

I really really like the song My Funny Valentine and want to know what I should listen to to hear more of that kind of thing. I have little interest in jazz that's improvised and free form, I'm looking more for the stuff that's essentially pop music with jazz chord progressions and instrumentation. I'm guessing there might be some good compilations out there of that kind of thing?

Because there's this music group thing called Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox who do exactly that. My 9-year-old son loving loves both Guardians of the Galaxy soundtracks, but it's more than that - he just loves the 70s  . It's not just because of the Marvel tie-in. He's been exposed to a whole gamut of stuff through his two older siblings' tastes and mine as well, and he's pretty clearly all about 70s radio rock - Kansas, Boston, Rainbow, but some soul and R&B as well. Not into Sabbath or anything too heavy (sadly). I'm looking for recommendations of other compilations/soundtracks that scratch the same itch. Already all over the Almost Famous OST, which has plenty of stuff he likes. Got Pulp Fiction as well, but I figure there are some collections out there I'm brain-farting, any recs appreciated. Thanks.

There's a series of compilation albums called The Best Seventies Album In the World... Ever! which might be worth checking out. I believe there are two. There are also four entries in the same series for the 60s, which are also good fun. They cover most of the big popular trends. James Blake for sure. Moses Sumney's got some of that going on. I'd also recommend King Krule's new album but a lot of that isn't exactly melodic since dude's got a voice like baritone sandpaper. New Corbin album as well. The Stand4rd's album would probably fit the bill (which had Corbin who then was going by Spooky Black).
