I am seriously digging the theme in Mural City. If this game has nothing else going for it, it has an awesome soundtrack. As someone who's played through Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest more than once mainly on the strength of its music, that counts for a lot with me.

Imagine how much more sad and lonely we would be if not for the hard work of lowtax. Here's $12.95 to his aid.
The music is so unique and effective, never leaving my head. Sakuraba wishes he could be Uematsu though he has his genial compositions sometimes. Those who want to compose game music should take a deep study of this, but I may be biased towards quality pianos with or without heavy phaser and chorus, as a Kurzweil fan.

I'm surprised that you guys want more dialogue and story out of this game, because I want the opposite. It has just enough to annoy me with how bad its characters are, and I feel like it could only benefit from having less.

At first I assumed that was a problem with this game in particular, but based on the few hours of it that I've seen, I feel the same way about Dragon Quest 11. Its UX and systems don't seem like they're worlds ahead of this either, which is surprising to me, because I thought that was a pretty well-respected series.

It's pretty clear that these games aren't made for me, which is fine, but it's getting annoying, because I really like the idea of turn-based RPGs, and almost none of them are made for me.

We aren't begging for it because we think it will necessarily be good, or even enjoyably bad. We're begging for it because it will give us something to bounce off in the name of creating entertaining content, rather than having to resort to podcasting about old British TV ad campaigns or Sunday mornings on テレビ朝日.

gently caress knows, FFXIII and Star Ocean 4 were not marvels of storytelling but they gave us something to work with.

Dragon Quest's whole shtick is being cute, charming, comfortable, familiar and loaded with attention to detail and polish, with a lot of emphasis on the familiar part. When they brought over DQVIII, a quite technically impressive late PS2 game, they massively overhauled the UI, swapped out the chiptune soundtrack for an orchestrated version and added voice acting all in the name of making it not seem super archaic. It's not my thing either but I get why people like it. This game is definitely shooting for some Dragon Questiness but it would be silly to pretend that it's doing it as well as the real thing.

The only thing I could really classify as bad (as opposed to something like cliche or underdeveloped or NOTHING AT ALL) would be the bat's constant yelling. I feel like there's a lot of potential for dialogue that just wasn't used, probably because Microsoft wanted a quick-but-decent-enough JRPG for the 360. The magic ghosts or whatever could be characters, they could talk to their own lead, all the leads, or even between each other. But it's mostly nothing.

Dragon Quest being the way it is is definitely a feature and not a bug, for sure. I guess what I'm saying is that I hadn't fully processed that not only is Blue Dragon poorly realised, it's a poorly realised version of something I'm not remotely interested in to begin with. I was kind of assuming that "If this were better, I'd like it," but that's not necessarily true.

I mean, just having more of the NPC dialogue have some back and forth with the party rather than just being a line or two of exposition would go a long way. Like when Marumaro's siblings were telling us about magic words. It also might help tie things together a little better, rather than having something like Mural Town be visually and conceptually neat but just kind of dropped on you and then quickly swept away.

Fun fact I learned while watching the speedrun! That fight with the four tigers is actually scripted so that it absolutely cannot kill you, even if you have the minimum exp possible to get to this point. Each tiger will only ever actually attack once and since you have five party members it's impossible to lose without deliberately suiciding.

Jokatgulm is tedium.
Jokatgulm is pain.
Jokatgulm is suffering.

I wonder if you can just do the escort by just keeping between the wagons and using the ring thing to engage the encounters or is the range for that too short. Having that many encounters in a TB game is pretty bullshit, maybe they expect you to use the field skills to instantly kill them?

With everyone dumping on the game I honestly thought it started picking up steam around the time you got back to the village, because by then you've started actually doing something the main characters cares about instead of just fixing Marumarus problem. Marumaru being in love with Zola is really bad though, especially since it's start when people are fighting for their lives(and probably dying) all around them.

That's...really stupid.

I actually remembered this 4 tiger fight very strongly, as that was (what I remembered being) the first and maybe only time I game over'd (besides optional superbosses.) I went in, had 4 of my characters KO'd immediately, and I didn't have many revival items. I must've just reset rather than continue with the fight at that point. I also remember there being two sets of four tigers, one that you fought without Zola, so obviously my memory is faulty.

Coincidentally, this is also around the point where I just dropped the game out of boredom, before picking the game back up again after years and a bit of encouragement. No, I don't think the game gets better or more interesting. There'll be a few more interesting setpieces, but that'll be at the same, glacial pace the game has already been going for the past 20 hours. If this lp is going to continue, I feel like it would be out of the sheer force of the sunk cost fallacy.

Nidoking
Jan 27, 2009

I fought the lava, and the lava won.
The only strategy I can see potentially working on those tigers would be to have a Guardian in the back row with Guard and some really strong defense, and even then, I don't know whether they'd leap in to take the hits for characters at non-critical health from attacks that would still kill them. I can't imagine you'd have any of the vital Skills for making that work properly this early in the game. On the bright side, it's a decent case for Trapfloor, since I don't think any other Barrier Mage skills are going to make much of a difference here.
