I'm still chuckling at Randy's mention of a show called "Little People Renovating Big Houses" during the courthouse scene. I would legit watch the hell out of that if HGTV made happen.

I personally think the episode was worth it just for "coal mining and truck driving are not modern jobs!" line. But I'm partial to that because it's a contention point in my family where my dad is super psyched that Trump is working to bring back coal mining.

Pretty sure they made garrison into Trump, and were planning for something else. They planned for both. Just like the obama election episode.

turboraton posted:S20 and S19 were amazing, even if you don't like it lmao at you hating on it at every single page of the thread. I liked Season 20, but not as much as I liked Season 19, and I liked Season 18 better than either of them. Aside from that, I don't have any real opinions about what seasons are better than what other seasons - except that I don't get the hate for the earliest seasons. I got into the show by bingewatching the entire thing between seasons 15 and 16. I loved the whole show, but the earliest seasons gave me a surreal feeling; the later seasons were more polished and better-done, but things had kind of settled into a status quo. New episodes don't feel dangerous anymore, you know? They haven't for most of the show's run. The first few seasons, each new episode feels like diving into an alien world where anything can happen. But eventually, each new episode feels like eating another candy from a box you're already very familiar with. Ironically, I think that abandoning the "Kenny dies every episode" thing actually made the show feel more formulaic - if a character needs to die every episode, then the writers are doing a constrained writing exercise where whatever the plot of the episode is, they need to work in a cause of death; this may sound like a formula, because it is, but it forces an anarchic, pseudo-horror feel - I don't think most people ever took things like Kenny dying seriously, but the early South Park seasons really felt like horror to me, and I loved that and it hasn't been as present lately. Now, to be clear, I'm not one of the people who thinks South Park should have ended a long time ago - there've been a load of good episodes in recent seasons; gently caress, Grounded Vindaloop is a serious contender for my all-time favorite SP. I even think serialization is a good idea; I just think it mixes poorly with centering serious social commentary. I do think South Park has lost something magic it had a long time ago, but that's probably inevitable for such a long-running show, and it definitely still has a good soul. I don't think decline is inevitable; indeed, I think it could get even better in the future!

It's the reason they had to make Garrison do a 180 from not wanting to be president to mostly being on board with it. In the end though I don't think the season would have been much better either way, as Garrison and the election were only like 1/4th of it. They ended up going all in on trolling, which was the least interesting plotline.

sweetmercifulcrap posted:Yeah. It's the reason they had to make Garrison do a 180 from not wanting to be president to mostly being on board with it. I suspect they may have even done another, less drastic course correction regarding that subplot. It seemed like early on they (like others) were convinced Trump was trying to throw the election. Then later on they had to admit he probably wasn't. Or maybe that was just their own twist on the storyline regardless, I dunno. But it did seem kind of awkward how that aspect of the story fizzled out, and never made a huge amount of sense. And it just got even worse when the election result was also the opposite of what they expected. I think they just ended up predicting a bunch of things wrong about Trump and felt like the satire wouldn't be relevant enough unless they kept course-correcting. Easy to see how that could get exhausting. If they were still doing Trump-of-the-week episodes, perhaps the season premiere would've been about GarriTrump rescinding protections for children of immigrants and withdrawing from the Paris climate accords. Surely those things would stay relevant for a week at least! Sir Lemming fucked around with this message at 03:15 on Sep 17, 2017 |

Tenzarin posted:This person thought matt and trey thought trump wouldn't win the election. Thats a pretty big leap. Hardly. Matt and Trey did admit they were counting on Hillary to win. They were following Las Vegas odds, which had Hillary winning, and most polls had her winning as well. She seemed like a sure bet, but no one saw the backlash that carried Trump into office.

The US hasn't seen a true populist candidate in a long time, jimmy carter maybe in living memory. Nobody remembers that they clean house every time they rise to prominence. Not surprising matt and trey bet on the obvious thing.

I don't mind the political episodes per se but I didn't like season 20 where that was all they did. I liked the good old days when sometimes they did wacky crazy bullshit and sometimes they did politics. My favorite episode is Casa Bonita because of how happy Cartman is to go to Casa Bonita.

Last couple years I've been more or less avoiding this thread because it's usually been more negative than positive, but this episode was pretty bad. It was all over the place, and feature a bunch of jokes that weren't quite enough to build anything decent around as well as them breaking up Heidi and Cartman. I think in the wake of the Trump election, almost one year later people were really expecting South Park to come in with some really good humor regarding the issues that are going on and instead we got a reality tv show joke, a 'robots took my job'(terk mah jerb) rehash of an old joke with nothing new to say, and a plot where a character is in a relationship that they no longer want to be in...which you could insert your own joke about the creators into here. I'm hoping this week is a better offering. That was not a strong season opener.

As far as season openers go, the truth is it was somewhere in the middle. Season openers are rarely the best episodes of South Park. Also, there were a lot of decent jokes and gags, even if the episode had a lovely plot and didn't really go anywhere. I do find it funny that they hosed with a bunch of peoples Amazon Alexas with the episode as well.
