I never got hooked on Allelujah or Asunder like I did with literally every other GY!BE/ASMZ album. Maybe it's a problem in my own brain -- probably -- but I had an idea of those albums as being like... fan service. I think part of that is having been listening to them the whole time they've existed. I've rarely liked the results of bands "reuniting" even though GY!BE never "technically" broke up (but you know they totally did). Did Pavement ever reunite? That happened right? Or did I dream that? Dinosaur Jr. and the Pixies are the only indie rock bands that immediately come to mind as doing great albums after reuniting (Mission of Burma don't count, no, that reunion poo poo was dire). But man, Luciferian Towers is fantastic. It sounds a lot like Lift Yr. Skinny Fists -- sometimes in a way that might be "by the numbers GY!BE", but I'm tired of thinking too hard about motivations and meaning, sometimes it's okay to just enjoy a beautiful piece of work and that's what they've done this time. I can definitely see myself listening to it an order of magnitude more than both the last two combined. edit: I think what I was hung up on was that ASMZ seemed like a band that had a sound always progressing, from the minimalist and droney He Has Left Us Alone to the angry riff-rock on 13 Moons to the plaintive gospel of gently caress Off Get Free, and when GY!BE came back and just sounded the same, it felt unnecessary to me. I mean that literally -- it felt unnecessary to me, to my life experience/whatever. Luciferian Towers feels necessary to me, right now. precision fucked around with this message at 22:26 on Sep 15, 2017 |

That is an insanely good album. And I have never seen these guys live, though it sounds like I really should. Which will be getting rectified end of October in London, even if it's a Tuesday - work on Wednesday be dammed.

Anthem for No State, Pt. III is really good. drat good.xiansi posted:That is an insanely good album. Yeah they are amazing live, if they are playing near you, you should really check them out! They typically bring along some amazing visuals too. They have a few projectors setup with actual film stock and they have their (touring) projectionist destroy film with some type of chemical that dissolves the film? It's a really cool effect. I mean, this all might sound really pretentious- hm, on second thought it probably is. But really, they are amazing live. I've been lucky enough to catch them several times since their resurgence, the best experience probably was seeing them play in a cathedral here in LA. It was kind of surreal to watch this band in a church, while sitting a pew. Speaking of shows, anyone catching Explosions in the Sky tonight at the Greek? I'm gonna take a wild guess they gave it a 6. Pitchfork's weird bias against post rock has always confused me. Most of the time you can tell the reviewer just hates the entire genre.

It's a 7.3 positive review. Just weirdly... dramatic, i guess? I don't usually read album reviews though.

Pitchdork reviewer says they abandoned their maniacal magic, should follow the template of Ministry. Ministry, hahaha. Also, that the overall scope of the album is optimistic. The horror! Maybe they have children now and have adopted a more hopeful outlook on the state of things. I guess the reviewer hasn't seen a live video where they perform 'Hope Drone' in front of a screen that has hope hastily scrawled on it.

Ministry have like twice as many bad albums as good and haven't been listenable since Filth Pig e: the "best" Pitchfork review is still a tie between Schreiber's insane rant about I Get Wet and their revisionist perfect 10 review of In The Aeroplane (after giving it like a 7 at release lol) my old pal Tom wrote a great reaction/rebuttal to the Andrew WK one: http://freakytrigger.co.uk/ft/2002/07/andrew-wk-i-get-wet-pitchfork-review/ quote:He could be being knowingly over-the-top, though his righteous responses to critics on the Reader Mail page suggest otherwise. If he’s serious, it’s illuminating, the thought-processes of the “rock elitist” (his words) laid bare. It’s not that Schreiber doesn’t like Andrew WK – he does like it, his description of what happens to him when he listens to it is absolutely dead-on. It’s that he refuses to like it, cannot let himself like it – this music is “empty”, it’s “evil”, it’s “fun”. Andrew WK steps outside the polite post-grunge boundaries of indie rock, and to prove it Schreiber damns him by comparison with three other beyond-the-pale populist stompers. Case closed. precision fucked around with this message at 22:40 on Sep 21, 2017 |

Been listening to Luciferian Towers almost nonstop and just today realized that Anthem For No State part 2's western riff is a callback to F#A# Infinity's "Slow Moving Trains/The Cowboy". Fell dumb it took me so long to place it.
