metalheads are very prone to falling for gimmick projects where some other genre or instrument or whatever is randomly thrown in with not very good metal.

Sammy Davis Jr. Jr. is also in repose.
Speaking of Yellow Eyes, this album is from last year so I don't know if what was posted then, but the vocalist/lead guitarist has a one-man side project that's pretty good.

Might not have been seeking stuff out enough, but the only black metal release that I've really put a lot of listens into is Exuvia, by The Ruins of Beverast. What are some releases from this year you all have been listening to a lot?

Also this song from Blaze of Perdition is loving sick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co5ut84sxiQ

Smirr

You already mentioned Exuvia, so I'm going to exclude it from this list that is ranked roughly by how much I listened to the album in question

Gjendød - Nedstigning (very good, no qualms whatsoever except that the guy on the cover could stand to lose a few kg)
Chambre Froide - Rouges chapelles (tied with Gjendød pretty much)
Krolok - Flying Above Ancient Ruins (pretty shameless Master's Hammer worship but w/e)
Sarkrista - Summoners of the Serpents Wrath (super duper dumb, Finnish sounding BM from Germany, but it hits the spot)
Wiegedood - De doden hebben het goed II (occasionally too "post-*" sounding for me but I keep coming back, probably because I empathize with the repeated "I don't want to be" line in that one song)
Wode - Servants of the Countercosmos (still has to grip me like their debut did)
Туман - Zuhanás (An interesting take on "cosmic" black metal that is keyboard-free but I feel like back-to-back listens of this would give me OCD)
Celestial Grave - Pvtrefactio (these assholes need to release a proper album already)
Death Fortress - Triumph of the Undying (good material, absolutely unacceptable guitar tone)
Highland - Loyal to the Nightsky (this should probably be higher but tbh I'm too old to listen to albums that are 58 minutes long. But it's good)

Since you began your post with Ruins of Beverast, and the Nagelfar demos and miscellanea got a re-release in 2017, I want to plug a band on a technicality: if you are unfamiliar with Nagelfar, Alexander von Meilenwald's former band, absolutely give them a listen. If you're coming from RoB you should probably start with Srontgorrth, which is one of the best black metal albums I know. The other two are also very good, but Srontgorrth is just... man

I'm wanting to get CN's releases digitally if at all possible. I can't find anywhere to buy digital copies of Volahn, Arizmenda, or any other CN groups. Their band camp is empty and Ajna has like 2 releases on cassette. gently caress a tape deck only MP3 is real. I don't want free links. I want to purchase this poo poo with my Trumpbucks.

Why don't you perform zazen, facing a wall?
Oh man, they nuked their bandcamp? Guess you're gonna need to seek out kvlt warez.

e: real talk they were always a kind of unreliable label and most of the acts associated with it seem to have wound down, they haven't released anything this year to date, their blog is closed...Volahn is still playing shows apparently but it sure seems like they've shut up shop

Volahn is playing some fest in Texas later this year I think. I've heard stories for the past few years about how lovely the label has been with orders and shipping. You can gently caress up your physical orders all day but don't gently caress up your digital. It's not that hard.

I've also heard dubbing can be really hit or mid with CN releases too.

They played Destroying Texas Fest a few months ago and Red River Family Fest last weekend. They had a handful of tapes at DTF that went pretty quickly.

I've heard of more than a few people getting tapes with nothing on them, though.
