Patrick Rothfuss is the celebrated author of the best-selling fantasy series The Kingkiller Chronicle. The success of his series has made him something of an icon. He’s had side-projects like writing for the game Torment: Tides of Numenera, and probably even greater things after he’s finished with Kingkiller.

Here’s a link to his official website.
And here's the previous thread about him and his works.

The Kingkiller Chronicle

quote:

I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.

You may have heard of me.

Name of the Wind (2007)
Wise Man’s Fear (2011)
Doors of Stone (Still being written!)
Slow Regard of Silent Things (2014) - A novella

The series recounts the life and adventures of Kvothe, legendary sorcerer, musician, assassin, lover, and adventurer, who is currently living in obscurity as a humble village innkeeper. The story is all about his quest to solve the mystery that as a child cost him his family. The series is currently unfinished, but includes two great books, a novella, and a few short stories.

There’s now an anniversary edition of The Name of the Wind, and it looks sweet! It also has some awesome-sounding ancillary material in it, like details of the world’s calendar and currency systems.

There’s a television adaptation of the series at works, to be produced by Lin Manuel Miranda, and it will no doubt be quite a show whenever it comes out. It’ll be as cool and satisfying as Game of Thrones :)

Why should I read this guy’s books?

Rothfuss has unique opinions on art, stories, women, life, and magic. His prose is one of a kind. He’s a master of eroticism. Kvothe is a very multifaceted character – at times you have no idea what he’s supposed to be. The final novel of the trilogy will be a real spectacle.

I’ve heard bad things about this author and these books.

Some might call his writing flawed, but others will vouch for him. Just read these recommendations:

quote:

[THE WISE MAN’S FEAR] was worth the wait. I gulped it down in a day, staying up almost to dawn reading, and I am already itching for the next one. He's bloody good, this Rothfuss guy.

- George R. R. Martin, author of Tuf Voyaging

quote:

No one writes about economic reality within this genre like Pat Rothfuss. The real-world weight of the sometimes impossible distance between the things you want and need and what you have in your pocket.

No one writes about music like Pat Rothfuss. The way it sneaks into your soul, the way it feeds you like nothing else.

No one writes about stories like Pat Rothfuss. How the right story at the right time can change the world, how the teller can shape a life.

No one writes like Pat Rothfuss. Full stop. Read this book.

- Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of Hamilton

But if you’ve never read Rothfuss, I doubt you can understand what his writing is like. Go ahead and get to it!

Is the third book ever coming out?

While Rothfuss promised that the whole trilogy was finished before publication, but that proved to be an optimistic estimate. He’s still working on it. There’s no date set, but we’ll have our hands on it soon enough!

What are the seven words that will make a woman love you?

I continue to enjoy the series while acknowledging that Rothfuss is a idiotic person with misogynistic tendencies that seep into every pore of his books.

No.
God No.

I read it back when I still had a decent-ish opinion of Rothfuss' work and I thought it was god awful. There's no plot and trying to make sense of what little actually is happening is painful.

I was catching up with a friend of mine this past week and she mentioned that she was trying to read Name of the Wind a second time because she "didn't feel like she quite got it" the first time. I told her I didn't like it, and it was like I was a spy giving another spy the password. She went right into a tirade about how much she hated Kvothe and how dumb everything was and how she couldn't understand why everyone had recommended it so heavily to her. It was really funny but also a little hosed up that she felt pressured enough by fan friends to reread a book she wanted nothing to do with.

Then I told her about all the poo poo that happens in Wise Man's Fear and she thought I was making it up

Maybe he was just really really into Tak. Speaking of, the theme of one of my buddy's Halloween parties this year is The King Killer Chronicles. It's all the way out in the burbs, but if I go I promise I will take pictures and post them. Depends on if this girl I'm seeing wants me to go to her thing or not (probably).

i went on a date once with an engineer from google. after a perfunctory coffee the guy took me back to his dorm room. we talked about webcomics for a while, he told me to read homestuck, i told him i would. then he pulled a book down from the shelf and handed it to me. it was a cheaply printed a4-size book with two poorly-drawn animes kissing on the cover. "i gave this to my ex for her eighteenth," he said. i opened it. it was 200 pages of self-published harry potter tentacle porn. "it's a satire," he said. not knowing how to respond, i leafed through it and made soft chuckling noises. he took the book back from me, sat down on his bed and for the next 20 minutes he read aloud to me long passages about glistening curves and coils sliding into warm and lubricated secret crevices, looking up every few seconds to see if i was delighted. obviously i looked delighted because he kept going. not long after that i told him i had an assignment due tomorrow and left, he tried to kiss me as i went but i managed to turn it into a deft half-hug and he didn't get a second date but he did return my copy of one hundred years of solitude (he said he always brings a book to trade with "new friends", his was surprisingly a george saunders collection that i should have read but couldn't bring myself to open and later mailed back to him) with mysterious extensive water damage

Re-reads the books 10+ times, cannot engage with anyone asking genuine questions about the flaws of the book, proudly proclaims that they will re-read the books again rather then read something new to prove a point.

Pretty sure that's Rothfuss' core audience. I enjoyed the books when reading them, thought there might be something good about them (but wow did Wise Man's Fear bring up some hosed up things I could not defend), but after reading what other people brought up and discussed came to realize yeah I enjoyed the books as a binge read but only because the books are the lowest common denominator of genre fiction and bring nothing new or unique to the concept other then a fault-less hero and terrible characterization of women from an ardent, self proclaimed feminist.

It's one thing to read a book absent of the opinions and views of its author. Sure tons of famous fantasy/SF authors turned out to be horrible human beings, but it's not like Marion Zimmer Bradley wrote into her books how it was okay to sanction and participate in the abuse of children or Orson Scott Card wrote a bunch of stuff about brutalizing and killing gay people, so you could still enjoy the core content of what they wrote without being fed their own personal hosed up life ideas.

Rothfuss however has gone all in on his feminism ideology so once you know that and read his books its more like holy gently caress you are writing and constructing these characters to completely agree with your half formed ideas about women but in reality its toxic as gently caress and should not be endorsed or celebrated. Having a borderline escort as the main love interest is fine except Kvothe is always a hair away from calling her a whore for not truly appreciating his skills and the time he puts in to her.
