To be honest, I think the target demo for this show doesn't care about TV that much. I know people who like star trek and are in their late 20s/early30s and they just don't care about TV shows.

How accurate are tv ratings anymore? Do they factor in watching shows on streaming apps like fox now? I watched the Orville on OTA broadcast this past week and it was probably the first non sports thing I've watched on first broadcast in a decade.

Yeah, I watched The Orville live this week and other than sports, I haven't done that in years.

Nielsen ratings factor in DVR watches but not online streaming views. Networks typically don't publicize streaming views but I'm sure they factor it in when they're deciding whether to cancel or renew a show.

I think Fox gives Seth one more season, I think he has enough pull with them to get that done. They'll move its timeslot around every week and Hulu or Netflix will pick it up in a deal that also includes at least one, possibly as many as three, full length films because he is just going to keep doing that and all we can hope is that he gets better at it someday.

So, uh... when Yaphit extended a blobby appendage to shake Pria's hand... that WAS the same appendage he tried to impress Dr. Finn with, right? Did he trick Pria into giving him a quick handy in the middle of Engineering? Other reactions to episode 5:
Overall, decent episode. Not their best, but had some great moments.

I think the admission that Seinfeld is still the most important human comedy in the 24th century is just a testament to the truth that is @seinfeld2000 I agree- the "I saved you which means I'm good but also you have to now live in a totally unknown future" was a concept they could have let breathe more in the episode. If they had the time traveler reveal earlier, Pria could have played it up as if she was rescuing them for (vague reasons) and the romance scenes with her and Mercer could have expanded on that idea more. Meanwhile Grayson could have uncovered that something more was up and just as they cross to the 29th century Pria does the reveal of "ok yeah I was actually just here for your ship. I'll drop you off on a nice planet somewhere though and you can get your life started whatever peace" Edit- basically, the story is good, the plot of the episode they made about this story spends too much time on one of the more boring parts of that story- how they find out she's a time traveler.

For added humor, every episode should end with her visit being wiped from the timeline so they never remember having met her before. Better, they remember her (since they stay in their timeline) but she forgets them because she's always from the changed one. "Crap, she's back. Okay, everyone play along until she stops whatever blows us up THIS time."

I think it's also that TV Critics aren't really going to rate a show that isn't "groundbreaking" (i.e. you're ready to say this is "the new thing") or it's something that's a best-in-class of it's genre and format. The Orville is a weird throwback to TNG, and that's a style of show most people aren't clamoring to return to. So if it doesn't hit either of those there's no professional reason to recommend it. Also- I think it'd get less heat from critics if its TNG half was better merged with its comedy half. Even on the better episodes, the comedy feels like it's just jammed in to the corners of the episode so they can stay on-point for whatever the original pitch MacFarlane made to FOX was.

I realized if this was a satire or parody series it would've jumped at the opportunity to do a 2001 Space Odyssey reference during the wormhole scene, but instead they just straight up did a wormhole scene. And it was good.

That leg falling out of the ceiling, everyone looking at it, especially Pria with a "what the gently caress?" Then the captains "Nevermind about that for the moment" was amazing I think the best thing about it is you get to imagine some scenes that you didn't see, which would look incredibly stupid in execution but are hilarious in imagination: Isaac sneaking into Gordon's quarters, carefully anesthetizing his leg and amputating it, sneaking into Pria's quarters, climbing up to the ceiling, carefully removing celling tiles, putting the leg he smuggled in there, closing it, all the while thinking "I have determined that this is the optimal prank" John Wick of Dogs fucked around with this message at 04:45 on Oct 8, 2017 |

Get this... we throw in a joke every episode! Maybe even two! Great idea, huh? We'll call it "Star Yucks!" Whaddya say? Morty pushes a button. The schlub falls through a trapdoor into a room with Kirstie Alley chained to the wall, who devours him raw. -----------Scenario Two----------- Network Executive: Seth! Great to see you! Seth McFarlane: Same here, Morty. NE: What have you got for me today? SMF: Well, just imagine Family Guy in space. We'll start with this captain who- NE: (Hands McFarlane a gold-plated sack of money) I'm sold! SMF: But I didn't tell you- NE: Bah, that's just details. I'll fast-track you to production. Two years later, The Orville comes out. It's 10% Family Guy style jokes and 90% real sci-fi, but Morty is too coked out of his skull to even notice.

I know the bridge is a 2 story set and the staircase is real with the windowed corridor outside it I believe, but I wonder if they have enough physical space to do a real cool tracking shot all the way from some science lab, through the hallways, past that big corridor with all the windows, up the stairs and onto the bridge. A goodfellas like long take would be amazing and make it feel real, something every star trek set was too discrete and separate to do.
