I just got a new job, new apartment in a new location. I was looking for a larger TV than the puny 32" Samsung LCD that I have right now. Looking for 65" to a max of 75". I will use it for TV and movies. I don't have any gaming consoles. Can someone recommend a TV? Price range is up to around $4k. If you have home theater suggestions as well, I'll take them. I'd be willing to go to $5.5k for a TV and speakers.

In a similar vein to that guy, I'm just in the process of getting settled in Canada, and will be moving to my long term place at the end of the month. I'm thinking of holding out on buying a TV until some sort of Black Friday/Cyber Monday deal comes along soon, is that a sensible idea? I've never experienced these sales before so I wouldn't even know where to look to get an idea of what will be available where/when. Plus the whole added "But I'm in Canada" caveat. The thread seems to mention getting some extra speakers as a standard option for any TV purchase, is there a basic go-to option that doesn't send me down the audiophile rabbit hole?

I have Kanto's YU3 bookshelf speakers and they're a blast, even not paired with a subwoofer (I do have a subwoofer though.) The newer YU4, 5 and 6 are undoubtedly quality too, I just went with them because I found a good deal. Mind you, my concern was playing records first, TV second, but they're great all-around for the price. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOlPl7JMeis

I'm not well versed in the higher end sets since they are way, way out of my price range but the consensus here seems to generally agree with Rtings "best of" lists, which are super easy to sort and filter depending on what you need. For instance if you just go there and click on the best 65" TV it's going to suggest the LG C7 OLED which many people in this thread have mentioned having and rave about how amazing they are. So that seems to be spot on and you can buy those for around $2500-3k I believe, probably your best bet if that's the size you decide to go with. According to their lists the best 75" set is between the Sony 900E and Sony 940E but I don't know enough about them to tell you the differences aside from the $1000 price hike.

The Sony TVs are very good and get a lot brighter than the LG OLED TVs. Depending on how you watch either one could be better for you.

So, Philips Ambilight - an awful, distracting gimmick, or something that is actually kinda cool? However, the OP says that they never touch Philips. Are they known for being poo poo? Was kinda looking at this - https://www.argos.co.uk/product/7230316 Or: https://www.argos.co.uk/product/6787406 or: http://ao.com/product/ue55mu6100-sa...W=skimlinks_phg I'm looking to buy a new TV, and have around £600 budget, can stretch to £650 for something great (since I have to leave 350 for a soundbar). Ideally 55 inch for all the usual stuff - movies, gaming and so on. Kinda don't need 4k since I don't have any 4k inputs, but is certainly a 'nice to have'. What are the better brands in general. There is so much info out there and I am a little overwhelmed. I see a lot of 'no name' brands like hisence, Bush etc - are these no-goes? I did my own bias lighting setup with a kit from Amazon that cost $20. It doesn't have home automation integration or anything but it has a remote and an IR receiver so I was able to program the Harmony to do it all. It even turns on automatically when the TV comes on. Most of my friends and family have said they want me to do that as a Christmas present this year FWIW. I could take or leave it but I have noticed I get less eye strain than before during long movies and playing video games. If your TV has it built in then that's just a bonus and you can toggle it off if you don't like it.

I put a Hue lightstrip I got for cheap behind my tv and loved it. I just changed the color to whatever I felt like, but usually left it on a pretty dim glow that approximated candlelight. It was nice.

I think the UK versions were higher quality and I know I saw a decent review last year of a UK Philips TV with ambilight. Personally I think it's kinda cool and wish most people would do it.

I really wish that deal was more exciting. There are so many crap movies out on 4k. Every day when I see 4k stuff on sale, I invariably look at the list have have trouble finding much I want to buy that I don't already own. Also, with many titles starting to drop to $15, it becomes less compelling. You have to really pick and choose.

Yeah when I looked through the titles on amazon to see which had it (as it doesn't come up on your phone it seems), it was pretty much just stuff under $20 anyway. Not that enticing, sadly.

I got an extended warranty offer from LG in the mail for my C6P. Wondering what the consensus around here is on these warranties. Part of me is fearful of something breaking on my beautiful OLED, while another part of me doesn't want to drop $800 on a 3 year warranty (or even $100 for just an additional year). I've had my TV since January, and I'd say the usage is 10-20 hours a week on average comprised of TV/movies and some gaming. I'm pretty sure I have an extended warranty from my credit card, so that gives me a year on top of what I decide to do. So do you guys feel like the LG extended warranty is worthwhile or should I not waste the money?

SquareTrade sells a five year protection plan via Costco for $89. It's valid on TVs not bought at Costco, you just lose out on the extra years buying at Costco would've given you.

Not as cheap as Costco. Costco squaretrade is a steal Use a Citi card and you get 2 additional years through citi after the squaretrade warranty.

Extended warranties average out to a money losing proposition but if you're really worried then get it. 800 seems pretty steep but I guess it is an expensive TV. I bought extended warranties on two or three expensive items and ended up using two of them and making out like a bandit. This was like 10-15 years ago though when I think you could tilt the warranty usage odds in your favor just by holding onto your paperwork and receipts and poo poo, now I'm guessing that no longer matters and it's all registered electronically. One was on a $1000 Sony digital camera that the iris starting sticking at certain apertures. They sent it in to get it fixed but couldn't so they just gave me $1000 in store credit and I bought a 2.5 year newer camera. Other was a 61" DLP and again they couldn't fix it so they actually mailed me a check for the full purchase price (minus warranty cost of course).

Thanks for the input, everyone. I think one of the reasons that price is so high from LG is because they're going off their MSRP of $6000-some, even though they don't sell it for that price and I only paid $2500 for it. I'm looking into the SquareTrade offer at CostCo right now. I'm not a CostCo member (closest one is 2 hours away), but I think I can buy online without being a member. One thing I noticed was that the description says I need to buy it within 90 days of the TV purchase. I bought my TV back in January. So am I poo poo out of luck with this great-priced SquareTrade option or will that day limit not matter? I noticed that SquareTrade's website says that the warranty needs purchased within 30 days of the TV purchase. A quick search through the Amazon SquareTrade offers looks like they only cover items purchased from Amazon in the past 30 days.

My nightmare saga is over. It took a month and a half to do but I finally got Samsung support to send a subcontractor around to my house. 30 minutes of being handled by anyone other than Samsung and I was straight on the list for a mainboard swapout. A month on from that and I haven't seen a flicker from the PS4Pro since. Highlights of dealing with Samsung support:
The irony is I still really like this TV and think it loving rules, but Samsung have been abysmal to deal with and this whole clusterfuck has turned me off recommending their TVs to anyone who wants to use them for gaming.

My dad is thinking of getting a 4K TV. We're in the UK. His Internet connection is about 30Mbps down, and he doest want to go for Sky Q and the extra money that costs per month. Since his download speeds won't really allow streaming 4K content (at any one time there could be 4 people streaming 1080p video, music, using Facetime etc.), what would be his options for downloading 4K content from the likes of Amazon or Netflix? If that's possible, what devices support that? I'm trying to talk him out of getting a 4K blu-ray player because it'll get little use from the kids.
