I know I've been slamming my fists on this drum enough here as it is and I'm slightly biased because I live in Houston and I miss the hell out of the AHL team, but I feel like Houston not being relatively high on a list of places to expand or relocate to would be a mistake. They've already got an NHL-ready stadium, it's located in downtown, IIRC the venue owns the Aeros name/jerseys/etc., so they've already got a franchise with plenty of history, they can play up the Howe angle, instant cross-state rivalry with Dallas, an established market (as the Aeros drew some of the best attendance numbers in the entire AHL), a huge population obviously, and there's no longer a loving dickhead* in charge of the Toyota Center.

I mean jesus now that the new guy is on board with trying to get a team, I mean fuckkkkkkkkkkk

I would not be surprised if a lot of this was attributable to overcorrection. For so long, Pittsburgh fans went after Columbus tickets because those were easier to obtain than ones in Pittsburgh. After a while, that flips because of people taking the same route.

Yeah that poo poo ruled. My high school team did a promo with them in 06 or 07 where we got a bunch discounted tickets and then we got to play a game on Verizon Center ice after the Caps game was over. So I got to watch the Caps lose to New Jersey or something, and then my team got smoked by some rich kids from Loudon. I scored a goal on NHL ice though so it wasn't a total loss.

I believe the only reason that Houston was never seriously explored as an expansion market was Les Alexander refusing to share the Toyota Center with an NHL team. With a new owner interested in getting an NHL team, I'm sure the NHL will begin negotiations on a new team fairly soon.

Then again, the Houston market is already pretty saturated with sports, and the NHL has never seemed too keen on expanding into areas where the hockey team immediately becomes the fifth or sixth most popular team in town. Really since they began expanding beyond 21 teams they've focused mostly on second tier cities that don't have a pro team or only one or two.

They were first to market in San Jose (I guess not if you include San Fran in their catchment area), Tampa Bay only had the Buccaneers, Nashville only had the Titans, Columbus only had an MLS team (and the Buckeyes), and Vegas had no one else. The only exceptions are Atlanta that they'd tried before and Minnesota which is the heart of American hockey interest. I doubt the NHL is too keen on adding another team to Houston given that it's not a slam dunk market and an NHL team going to end up on page 6 of the sports section no matter what it does.

"The fucking Mayans were right."
Houston is the 5th largest metro area in the US , and one of the fastest growing. I don't know if it's really a meaningful metric, but they would have a bigger ratio of population:major sports teams than Seattle would.

He is a lefty, so for whatever reason Trotz pulled the wrong bad D man and is going to have a rookie play his first NHL game on the wrong side. Setting the poor kid up to fail.

EDIT: Evidently Ness is going to play on his off side, not Djoos, which given what we've seen of Ness, probably going to be a total poo poo show.

In 2015, a few friends flew to Pittsburgh, sat in the second row for SCF Game 5 (I believe this is the one where Jones set a record for saves in a playoff game or something), spent the night in a hotel, and flew back out the next day - all for less than tickets were going in San Jose.

They've been a really bad pair but I have slightly more confidence in Chorney than Ness right now after all those penalties the latter took.

The Eagle's Nest deal was so great. 4 seats in the last row of the upper ends cost $20 and you got to see baby Ovie tear it up. Sure, the arena was so empty you could shout at friends in opposite sections of the upper bowl and they'd hear you and there was constant baseless media chatter about moving the team, but even the absolute poo poo Caps were fun to watch. Lots of underdog players to cheer for, too. Heh.

They should honestly bring Bowey up, waive Chorney (the easiest way for Bowey's salary to fit under the cap), and let Djoos and Bowey give it a go. Sure, they'd probably both struggle but at least they both have upside and can learn the NHL game a bit. Ness and Chorney are both extremely bad and have no room for improvement.

Also you know the state of the Capitals defense is bad when Brooks Orpik isn't even mentioned amongst their worst players.

I think he made a beautiful post and did a great job and he is good.
On the topic of (formerly) cheap seats in Washington... Might be an embarrassing turnout for the nationally-televised game tonight. RMNB reports 1,900 tickets still available for the Caps game against the Pens. They were also doing a promo for two tickets and two t-shirts for $88 too.

The Nats game being tonight probably hurts interest some, but I think the big thing is the prices. I know it's all relative and that price is pretty golden for a Canadian team, but a $100 night out at least is a bit of an ask for an early-season Wednesday game, even if it is against the dudes who just shook Trump's hand.

It's 100% the Nats game. Elimination playoff baseball is a bigger draw compared to a regular season NHL game, even if it is against a big rival.

I can see nosebleeds for ~$35 against Pittsburgh tonight but I think they're only low because they haven't sold out yet. If the Nats had played yesterday I'm sure the tickets would be twice as much. You look at when teams like the Blackhawks and Bruins are in town and, even on a weeknight, those tickets start at $60 for nosebleeds.

I don't know how normal it is but my hotel at Pittsburgh this year for game 5 of the SCF was cheap as gently caress. It was only 100$ a day for a stay at the Westin which was right downtown. Between that and the ticket itself only being like 250$ it was pretty cheap all in all for a Cup finals game.

And it helps that that was the best game I've personally been to :toot:. If you can afford to go to a finals game and get the chance definitely do it. The atmosphere at them is fuckin' awesome.

The BC Lions had an exhibition game going on at the same time as game 7 of the cup finals across the road. So many people bought tickets to that game just to wait to join the inevitable surge of people outside (when people still thought there was a chance the Canucks would win ahhh such heady times) that the Lions just relented and played the Canucks game on every TV in the stadium other than the jumbotron (and even then during halftime).
