What's the current issue there, our radiation shielding tech isn't good enough?

I thought the point of SpaceX was that it would be considerably cheaper to get satellites into orbit if we can reuse the rockets.

The way I remember it is that cosmic radiation slowly destroys any radiation shielding, which makes longer trips nearly impossible without dying. My understanding is horribly limited, though, so don't put too much weight on it.

Which also makes it cheaper to develop a greater permanent presence in space, which is necessary to launch interplanetary space travel. Musk has a singular vision and is building his other enterprises around that. Even something like the Boring company, which is mostly a ploy to piggyback on sweet Hyperloop money, could still be used to dig airtight underground caverns on Mars and avoid that whole 'atmosphere' and 'solar radiation' problem.

Volcott posted:What's the current issue there, our radiation shielding tech isn't good enough? Yep. You either need something impractically heavy accelerated into orbit and then Hohmann transfer it from Earth to Mars along with the rest of your equipment and crew, or you need to develop some kind of electromagnetic radiation shielding that won't fry the crew by its very power usage/will be able to be solar powered itself or somehow get a serious energy source in orbit, see problem one. The main way people have thought to solve this with the first method is to have the lunar-Lagrange points pipeline to move material from the Moon to ships being built in orbit and then move those ahead, but you'd still have to accelerate them in to the Hohmann transfer, and I think that whole infrastructure would have to start outside the Van Allen belt, too.

Is there even a snowball's chance in hell that going for a ride on one of Musk's rockets won't require an income on par with Musk's?

In this case "tomorrow" is probably a good clip away, but SpaceX is gonna be rolling in it when they own all the private slave labor asteroid mining colonies though.

Musk claims his intercontinental ballistic plane will be cheaper than current options. He's probably comparing it to full price first class fare. Or maybe what a Concord would have cost. So prohibitively expensive, but not impossible. Maybe they can have a coupon day or something.

In short, no WMDs, no military bases, and no government can claim an entire celestial body, plus you're responsible for what you do... but the current space law does not account for individuals, so.

And sing whaling tunes. A few years ago, there was a cop drama show called Almost Human that took place a few decades in the future. It featured all kinds of sweet high tech gear, robotic prosthetics, and android cop partners that could scan your testicles. And what kind of cool currency would be mainstream in this advanced setting? Why, usb sticks of bitcoins, of course!

I can already envision the SVU episode where someone is raped in space and the defense lawyer argues it was at the time not illegal to do that. Suspect is acquitted but on their next spaceflight the victim throws them out of the airlock.

Do songs count? Cause I pulled up Avenue Q on Spotify the other day since I realized I hadn't listened to it recently and hoooooooly gently caress "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist" wasn't great to start with but listening to it in the context of 2017 is just cringe-inducing

I saw a local production of Avenue Q a few years ago. It was an all-white cast. That was incredibly uncomfortable. I haven't been able to listen to the soundtrack since.

Ironic racism might have been more OK back in '06 but in today's racist-tacular context? Oh dears. If we can extend the original premise of the thread to include movie sequences, then I'd like to nominate the end of Tommy Boy (with Chris Farley, may he rest in peace). A whole bit about Chris Farley's character pretending to be a suicide bomber? That got a lot less funny once terror attacks started ramping up in the 21st century.
