If you don’t think insurance companies won’t use every shred of data to avoid paying money you’re in for a surprise.
Actually.... Connected car technology is going to be absolutely massive and change the industry. All the OEMs and other vendors (Verizon Hum, Sirius, etc) are all out there today trying to market and sell your data to insurance companies and anyone else who has an interest in it. That said, it's still pretty unclear on the legalities of a number of factors. That's why every insurance company is very hesitant to use data they collect today for claims handling. The only Instances of using the data that exists today that I'm aware of is for stolen vehicle claims. The big change comes with the car subscription services that millennials and city dwellers love. It's a lot easier to use the data when a company owns the car and bakes in the permission to use it into the contract. Now you know not only exactly what the car was doing, but that every Thursday you go to the same restaurant, and you go grocery shopping on Saturday morning, and oh you've used the built in WiFi several times to watch porn. You prefer blondes.

I was thinking about buying a small jon boat for fishing with my pops. Any chance at all I'll be able to tow it with the FiST? Something like this

Between the ride height and lack of low-end power, everything I've read makes this sound like a bad idea. I think attaching a hitch requires cutting the rear bumper as well, it's not something that seems worth it.

I guess I wouldn't see the issue with it. I pulled a Harbor Freight trailer with my two motorcycles and gear (probably 1300ish lb) from Phoenix to Spring Mountain Raceway (Pahrump, NV), then across to Thunderhill Raceway (Willows, CA), and back to Phoenix across 4 days without a single issue. People make way too big of a deal about pulling stuff with a car. Hell, I was on the stock clutch with a tune and downpipe, if that says anything (stock GTI clutches go poof quick like this unless driven with a few things in mind).

I've pulled way more than that with an older model Fiesta ST (the one with the 2l that never came to the States) and it copes just fine. We don't have the same strictness around towing here though so I'd check the insurance situation.

It's probably fine to pull it. Just don't plan on pulling it up a boat ramp with much slope.

hmm. I'll have to see if it's possible to get a hitch installed without doing anything to the bodywork. Gotta say, I'm not super jazzed about having a hitch sticking out the back of my little ST now that I think about it. Maybe I'll just buy a beater truck and get some cheapo barely legal insurance.

I've got a hitch on my FiST for a bike rack and it didn't require any modifications other than stiffer exhaust hanger rubber to keep it from clanging around.

Got my PSS's installed yesterday. Haven't really gotten to try them out but they're at least a million times better than the stock all seasons in the wet. No surprise there. Got a queen foundation home from Costco on the roof rack today too. I should have brought my longer straps but I got it to work. It wasn't as secure as I preferred but I was somehow able to stay off the loving highway unlike the majority of people with less than secure loads. I did run into an issue with trying to stay on neighborhood side streets because the dumb rear end suburb I'm temporarily living in has almost no side streets you can go point to point on. It's all 4 lane 45mph roads with dead end cul-de-sacs between them. Can't wait to get out of here. Hopefully I don't end up hanging myself in my car at one of the endless red lights within the next month.

Honda will be introducing a cheaper base model Civic Type R in the US. Hopefully they will even be available at MSRP. http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2017/10/honda-appears-ready-launch-cheaper-entry-level-2018-civic-type-r/

Have stripper-package performance vehicles proved profitable for automakers in the past? I know FCA does it here and there with various configurations, and back in the day did it a lot with the Mopar muscle stuff...

One of the cool things about the old 90's Civics, ITR's, and stuff was the styling was nice but pretty plain and there were no weird panels or designs. That meant companies could design all kinds of body kits, aero, spoilers, and wacky poo poo (aka "rice") that you could install easily and they worked (some to varying degrees) with the lines and styling of the underlying car. I know the thing these days is widebody kits and splitters, but its difficult to make them look good when the rest of the car is sooooo overstyled. I guess their market is 90's kids who have money now and want the car for the name recognition, which they'll use for their DD.

Not much is $50k-good when it comes to a track non-race car when you consider what $5-10k gets you.

Honda is pretty transparently trying to co-op the nostalgia for the civics from the 90s with this new one, pre-riced JDM just like before!

honestly I just dont get the appeal of pre-riced. but then i like to do fun stuff to cars instead of having it done for you, and that one just screams boy racer so hard it would likely get pulled over while parked empty on a street.

Been following the thread for a while and you guys had pretty much sold me on getting a GTI around the end of the year, but thanks to hurricane Harvey that's not happening. Thanks, Harvey, for flooding my house but not my stupid rear end grand cherokee. I should've driven it into water when I had the chance.

A stock CTR ran 1:42s at gingerman last weekend, breaking FWD time attack records for its class, the class above it, and the class above that. Despite its ugly rump, it's the best FWD car ever made by a tremendous margin.

Hopefully Honda is swapping the wheels for 18s, tossing the head unit/other digital poo poo, and installing a basic bitch black interior with maybe a little red stitching. In FiST news: cool pic from my last trackday, had some fun battles with the guy in the RS. He was not expecting me to maintain the gap on the straights

Speaking of the FiST... I've spent most of this week reading up on the Fiesta ST to replace my perfectly fine, comfortable '14 Mazda 3 2.5L auto. Somebody talk me out of it, tell me it's too small, tell me it's not as fun as everybody says. What should I pay attention to when I go test drive one this weekend? Mostly I want to find out if I can live with it at 6'3" and coming from a nicer interior.
|
# ? Oct 13, 2017 01:18 |

It's a fun car. The interior is really cheap (same as base Fiesta) and depreciates like a motherfucker. Buy used. Also 6' 3" is gonna be pushing it.
