You hear a song and think wait what had this same kind of melody or chorus, can't put your finger on it. Wondering what songs something sounds like or is ripping off / inspired by etc. Figured it wouldn't quite fit in the identify a song topic, anyways here are a couple songs that I had that thought on.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQyOZgrtP3s

Love Loaded by Waysted, this 80s rock song, in particular the chorus 55 seconds in, the kind of call and response thing. Reminds me of some song but I don't remember what. The riff is pretty AC/DC-ish, maybe Halen, very by the book rock, but I'm getting deja vu from the refrain bit there.

A more recent/known song,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3xcybdis1k

The Man by The Killers. I heard this one on the Mega64 podcast, I believe their best song. Everybody should do this disco/synthwave/whatever is happening thing in recent years. I figure they just took two or three classic songs and put them in a blender, mixed with some Kavinsky synth etc, what songs are they is the question. The "money in the bank" etc bit does sound Bee Gees-ish.

And if any song gives you deja vu, post it in this ill advised thread, with a license to ill.

Yeah this is definitely "Staying Alive" with some Queen style vocals thrown in. Not a bad song for a band I stopped paying attention to 12 years ago.

these two songs sound incredibly similar in my head but listening to them both I'm not sure if it's just me or not and I can't pinpoint exactly where the main similarities are. elephant is heavier and imo doesn't mirror the astronaut chorus but the reverb on the vocals and kind of propulsive beat connect these two for me

The chorus is the same chord progression, but half a step up, as the verse riff in "Jane" by Jefferson Starship:

(riff starts at :16)

That's not a super uncommon riff though so it could be a lot of things.

I largely concur there on The Killers, but that refrain, that synth twinkle and whatnot, there's a hit making science at work there. Definitely some Bee Gees and disco/80s pop in general, but I wonder what song has a refrain that sounds most like that out there. The synth riff thingy gets higher throughout, there's a rhythm to that that rings a bell. The underlying beat I guess is just standard disco/80s synth pop.

Very cool call! I've heard that song relatively recently since it's the theme to Wet Hot American Summer, so that's where I've heard the riff before. The call and response vocal bit of the refrain also reminds me of another song, the yelling thing then singing thing over a rock riff, that's in a lot of songs. One being It's Not Love by Dokken, but I think there's one that sounds just like this song I've heard. Also maybe refrains are just giving me deja vu a bit more, since there's generally a certain way of doing them.

On songs taking a riff from another song, I liked this nod to Blue Oyster Cult in an Arch Enemy song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=483VfL15oF8

I'll throw another refrain out there, Repeat by Grinspoon. I think that reminds me of something 90s-ish. The opening riff of the song is pretty Pantera-ish though, even though it's an alt-rock song. The refrain reminds me of something though! Call me crazy.

From the first time I heard Celebrate by Metric, I knew it was a pretty shameless ripoff of Underworld's Born Slippy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLg9WUhhhAs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTFrCbQGyvM

Also a more recent example: the chorus to Taylor Swift's Look What You Made Me Do is a re-interpretation of Right Said Fred's I'm Too Sexy, though IIRC I think she credited them as co-writers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNCpifW-U4c

Oh and Drake's Practice is a re-interpretation of Juvenile's Back That Azz Up, but Drake used to be on Cash Money Records (I don't know if he still is or not), so that was probably just a case of him paying homage to one of his labelmates:

It's time to kick the tires and light the fires, Big Bird.

Anybody remember The Wanted? They were that other boy band that popped up around the same time One Direction did in 2012, and the pop music world was salivating for a new late-90s-esque NSYNC-Backstreet showdown. It, uh, didn't happen.

Anyway, the only reason I bring them up is because one of their songs totally ripped off the theme to the Elder Scrolls:

Maybe this is a lot more general of a question than the thread asks, but can you provide some actual bands to listen to in the style of these tracks?

I know it's surf rock, but some recommendations would be very much appreciated.

I have! It's actually very funny, I asked this same question to my facebook friends, but I included "and I've downloaded a ton of man...or astro man? but they are a little too far out there for me."

Maybe I should have a listen to their discography, instead of just bouncing off of them.

You know, I'd be less worried about my 16 year old daughter dating a successful 40 year old cartoonist than dating a 16 year old loser.

I mean, Jesus, kid, at least date a motherfucker with abortion money and house to have sex at where your mother and I don't have to hear it. Also, if he treats her poorly, boom, that asshole's gonna catch a statch charge.

Please, John K. Date my daughter... Save her from dating smelly dropouts who wanna-be Soundcloud rappers.

The transition to the chorus of the Bee Gees' Lonely Days feels similar to me to that from the Strawbs' Oh How She Changed. Oh How She Changed came out in 1968, Lonely Days in 1970.
