Seriously that night was such an awful part of WWE managing to horribly gently caress up the Summer of punk storyline after doing it so right until the end of Money in the Bank. But yes, Rey Mysterio, one of the most popular wrestlers in WWE history, had 3 absolutely poo poo reigns. Mel Mudkiper posted:Right, WWE was not presenting its main product as a sport because it would literally pause RAW a few times a week to say "and now for a SPORT in between all this wrestling" I think you can have it on the same card- as long as context is maintained. But it's a difficult context to establish if say Chuck Taylor is your champion, and he does matches that are both brutal matches with chairshots, tacks, etc. and the grenade. Gumball Gumption posted:You might think Chikara is doing badly because of a lack of big names, Quack's difficulty to work with, and their convoluted story line, but actually it is because women and men can fake fight each other. And the massive difficulty trying to go from being a minor indy to a big promotion! There's so many American promotions that do varying levels of well, but cannot begin to get show on TV, have advertising, regular incoming funding etc.

I especially liked the guy who brought up fighting game physics. If you had a fighting game where the women did 2/3 as much damage and had 2/3 as much health, everyone would decry it. But they're treated as equals and works in that context. Bryan and Vinny talking about Lucha Underground brought up the good point that it was never treated respectfully. It was never a back and forth contest where the women used their technique and speed, while the men used power moves, but still mainly lucha style stuff that isn't always brutal. It was the men beating the poo poo out of the women with strikes, and not treating them as threats, just people they could easily beat viciously. FullMetalJackoff posted:I'd be quite content if WWE never booked an intergender match ever again, but allow intergender matchups in the video game so I can have Roman job to a 120 pound woman and an Owen Driver '97. If I thought they could do it well I'd be fine with it, but in this reality, no way in hell. Oh, and one reason it worked in Chikara- aside from the comic book stuff and whatever, the roster had so many skinny short nerds that Sara Del Rey managed to look bigger than a lot of the male wrestlers, and not at all out of place wrestling them. Just saw MYC alternate Nicole Matthews on Twitter call out a sexual harasser on the indies. There's been a bunch of stuff I've read and heard here and there this week that makes me think we are close to getting a Pro Wrestling reaction to all the Harvey Weinstein stuff in the news. But obviously, it is extremely tough to be the "first" person to go public as there are so few places to work.

In much less important news, WWE network is loving up for me. It will show video on the main page, but when I try to get individual videos (like NXT, a PPV replay, 205 etc.) it just won't load, gets stuck on a loading screen. Any advice, or is it time to try and interact with their terrible technical support?rovert posted:Just saw MYC alternate Nicole Matthews on Twitter call out a sexual harasser on the indies. I'd be thoroughly unsurprised at any wrestlers from before 2000 or any promoters were constantly up to sexual harassment at varying levels.

Something Bryan would often go to great pains to say was that he wasn't even opposed to the idea of intergender matches when they were used effectively, but that he just couldn't enjoy matches where dudes just whaled on women for 10 minutes then pinned them. I did disagree with his opinion on that Pentagon vs the three Japanese wrestlers, which I thought was a really cool and fun match to watch but he absolutely hated, primarily because of the arm-breaking spots Pentagon did at the end of each match. I could see that complaint if it wasn't something that Pentagon tried to do as a matter of course to almost every wrestler he has a match with. I think that might tie into the really weird thing of Pentagon Jr. being a truly vile character.......that the audience loved. Him constantly brutally assaulting people for little reason was bad enough, but seeing the audience cheer wildly as he breaks the arms of screaming women.....I can get that being bad. I always liked how the audience would cheer for violence, and then get quiet when something truly bad happened. "Wait, that was a storyline death? Like, that guy got killed? How the hell am I supposed to react to that?!?" Re: intergender matches-- Wrestling has the added obstacle of real-life ugliness making everything awkward, or at least retroactively awkward. Like there's no "scandal" in comics outside of what is explicitly written, wheras an intergender wrestledude who beats his wife makes you not want to see any of that onscreen.

Pentagon vs the Scorpion Trio was really good but it took 3 of the best women's wrestlers to actually take him out. Sara Del Rey also had some good matches in CHIKARA against smaller or marginally larger sized wrestlers, but I don't really see most women that are five foot nothing being able to take on the 6 foot plus guys in WWE Seeing Asuka soccer kick fools in 205 Live would be cool though, Asuka and Drew Gulak could probably put on a clinic

Incest is the angle that Vince keeps coming back to but never fully pulling the trigger on. The Bushwacker's went lingerie shopping for their mother, That leave it to Beaver rip off where the headbanger wanted to gently caress his mum, the Burchill's having heavy incest overtones just before the switch to PG, the pitched story where Vince was supposed to claim to have raped and impregnated Stephanie. One day Vince, one day you'll get to do your incest angle all the way to the "finish".

It's criminal what they did to Owens during that Universal run. I'm not surprised to hear he wasn't into the AJ feud, the booking, especially the finishes, really stunk.

I thought Owens title was one of the better recent ones, the segments with Jericho were always entertaining and the PPV matches were pretty good as well, especially Hell in a Cell (Seth) and the Rumble (Roman) come to mind. He was never able to beat anyone without outside help but he's a heel in WWE so

I think Owen's views are a reflection of modern WWE booking. You're not a top guy when you win "the belt" in WWE. The roster and indies are littered with former champions ever since the brand splits created multiple champions and effectively devalued them. In today's WWE you're "made" by feuding with a part timer like a McMahon, HHH, Rock, or Brock. Although it seems like Brock's lost his luster now. It goes back to WWE's difficulties making stars and relying on the stars of yesteryear. Its the only way they can count on getting big pops and marquee matches so it becomes the only way to truly elevate someone like Bryan or Punk or Owens.
