I watched the original run religiously, owned all the DVDs, watched them all constantly... and instantly gave up during the Beast With Two Backs era. It was just different in a weird way, and kinda sleazy. Everything I've seen of the show since then makes it look like a pale shadow of the first four seasons. They tried to do 'topical' humour (eyePhones) in a show set 1000 years in the future. It's aged about as well as the technology in The Jetsons.

Did it do anything as time-specific as iPhones, though? I remember they covered stuff like global warming, tax rebates and cola in the originals, but nothing that's quite as stuck-in-time as iPhone worship. The sleaziness definitely ramped up after the movies, I remember exactly when it happened - Leila, under duress, has sex with Brannigan to save the world. It's upsetting, weird, cruel and coercive - and not at all wholesome.

The Eyephone one is the only episode I always skip. I agree with it being offputting but that was kind of the whole point of an episode really obviously mocking uneven religion-based censoring. It's not my favorite episode but the end doesn't just come out of nowhere.

How did they do the Asian character? I can imagine that being cringeworthy. There’s a lot of that show that’s only just ok if you have a diverse cast to begin with. I remember seeing the show at the West End and thinking it was the funniest musical ever, then listening to it about a year ago and realising it had aged badly. Comedy musicals are tricky, but pull them off and they’re ageless. When you listen to Avenue Q you instantly think of it as being mid 00s.

Yea Avenue Q isn't terrible or anything but even before you hit 'everybody's a little bit racist' the entire show screams 'bush era edgy comedy'. Which is funny to me because Lopez would go on to do Book of Mormon with the south park guys and I'd say that comedy musical is firmly in the 'ageless' side of the divide.

We did the whitest possible white-girl version of The Wiz when I was in Catholic school. That was really loving embarrassing. I don't think hardly anyone besides me and a couple of other people had even seen the movie, the impossibly white drama department just wanted to do a "different" Wizard of Oz and for some reason went with the worst possible choice

Earlier this year I played in the band for a school production of Hairspray in a school with no black pupils. Pasty ginger Irish kid exclaiming, "If we get any more white people in here it'll turn into a suburb!" is funnier than it probably should be.

The first few seasons had some pretty decent ones in there, so I don't write off its whole time on Comedy Central as bad. It's just that that one in particular is an easy-to-point-to exemplar of the decline of the thing. It had just kind of gotten lazy by that point, and was almost unwatchable most of the time. The first time I saw Miss Saigon in the West End, one of the lead roles was in yellowface. Very bad yellowface too. They basically made his eyelids look fatter and pulled his eyes back a bit. Even in the early 90s this was controversial. They revived the show recently and actually cast an Asian guy. Plus changed half the lyrics. At least it wasn’t as bad as Breakfast at Tiffany’s terrible portrayal of Asians. It’s almost worse because half the movie is quite cool and sophisticated in a timeless way, then Mickey Rooney shows up to do the ‘me rikeeee’ routine.
