And that's just weird.

It really amounts to kids getting up to and over their heads in adult situations that they don't really understand. Now the kids are basically adults and a lot of the humor is gone now. Kids evolve with time the internet has made them more aware then before.

And that's just weird. As one of those people, it's not that weird. South Park is probably still hugely popular, but for me and most of my friends we fell off hard way way back in the earlier seasons after we got out of High School. And that was 90% of the people in the original SoT thread, people saying "Yeah South Park is dumb now, but I like Obsidian." or "I haven't watched South Park in ages, but Obsidian makes this interesting enough to grab." style stuff. Not because Obsidian is the key here, but because the attaching of an actual dev team to the product makes it more interesting. South Park like most to games things has a pretty sordid history. The loss of Obsidian isn't a defining "eh" factor, but uh. Having Ubisoft come out and say they are dropping Obsidian because they are too expensive and are doing this inhouse is a bad sign. Obsidian isn't super expensive, so uh. Having it get delayed 4-5 times, for over a year was a bad sign. Having zero previews/anything resembling gameplay show up was a bad sign. It just seemed like Ubisoft was either being forced to do a sequel and was trying to do it as cheap as possible, or something was going on behind the scenes. And despite the fact I imagine Matt and Trey "wrote" most of SoT, it's really easy to go in assuming that without actual writers/editors/gameplay people to tell them they shouldn't do things xyz way were all attached to Obsidian. I knew this was coming and purposefully ignored it until day of, when a friend told me it's actually pretty good. Because I assumed it was going to be a raging trash fire.

The combat is a lot more tactical it seems. It's sort of a grid based JRPG style system. Based on the 4 hours I've played this one is a lot longer. As for the writing, it's still great but I haven't actually seen much yet. If you obsessively loot everywhere and get collectables it can be a while between plot.

So judging by what people have been saying earlier in this thread, the writing of the show still isn't great? I fell off the show a while ago because I thought the same, but both this game and the first one I thought were pretty funny and they're written by the same people aren't they? Anyway I'm enjoying this game probably more than the first one, largely because I like being able to mix and match outfits without worrying about stats. Filling out the character sheet is some great fun too, and the combat while not the most challenging is pretty enjoyable.

I fell off the show a while ago because I thought the same, but both this game and the first one I thought were pretty funny and they're written by the same people aren't they? Season 19 and 20 (?) were pretty crap and I hear Matt & Trey have said so themselves. They tried to make the entire season have continuity and play out like an episode of 24 and it didn't really work with how they write the shows (I imagine anyone into the game knows already, but they write, voice and animate it during the week before it airs which is loving crazy). The biggest bump in the road for them was when Trump won because the latter half of the season was meant to... I don't know how it was meant to go. I bailed out of there when the 'MembaBerries started driving cars or some poo poo. I hear the new season has gone back to one off gag episodes with just a mild continuity in the town's background. Might start watching it again. And yeah it's all written by Matt and Trey. The game works (imo) because despite the entire game having an overarching story (which I've only just got to instigating about 6 hours in) each "section" of the game has been playing out as little sketches and gags that you'd get in the show. Couple of Priests ambush you in a closet, load of gags and quips, move on to the next set piece. Bunch of strippers attack you, load of gags and a boss fight, move on... That kind of thing.

Bullshit. Season 18/19 was some of the best stuff the show has ever done. It did go off the rails completely last season (20) with Trump winning and right now its kind of just meandering with some ups/downs. The episode setting up the game is pretty good through. (Shows how Professor Chaos got all his minions). You are right why the game and humor works well together

Aphrodite posted:Obsidian is usually noted for their writing, and broken just about everything else. Yeah, at first I felt iffy about Obsidian not heading the project, then I slowly came to that conclusion. All I can think when it comes to Obsidian is that as RPG makers they might have known some tip and tricks to "pacing" a game that's all about levelling that some other game devs might not be as clear on. Like a screenplay I imagine an RPG game brief needs to hit certain plot(game) points at certain times whilst doling out relevant and fun side quests and poo poo. Not far enough into this to judge any of that though... Plus I can't remember any of the pacing and poo poo from the first game either.
