The Titanic posted:Space games were a great thing because polygons were expensive for a computer to render, so much of the screen is black or something, and only a ship or two needed to be rendered to screen. Isn't that the crux of the matter? At one point space sims had a massive advantage over many other genres due to the hardware of the time and how space sims were rendered. But by the mid to late 90s hardware allowed all the assorted genres to catch up to space sims and display decent enemies and environments. There is never going to be that genre gap again which means any comeback has an uphill battle in getting noticed by the greater gaming public. kilus aof fucked around with this message at 04:40 on Oct 19, 2017 |

Ahahahaha, that was so stupid and boring. "holy poo poo or should I say unholy poo poo"...an actual line from the movie. But if you want to see Sandi's breakout performance, your going to have to wait for American Satan 2.0 because her role got refactored.

Poor Sandi edit: it would be excruciating to go to the movie I was unknowingly cut from. She must not have known until that showing. Ouch.

Another issue with space games (they are not sims outside maybe stuff like kerbal) is that, in the end, if you're going to have dogfights, planes are just superior. You intuitively know how the planes handle, that there is an up-and-down (and that being above is usually better), get a better feeling of speed, scale, and inertia, and so on.

A large pile of unique stats needed to be tracked on everything. Space was at a premium; character records were enormous. This caused problems when players moved between physical servers or across server processes, because of the time required to copy the data and the race conditions that could emerge. What a fun problem CIG will have when they keep increasing complexity of ships and cargo and add nested instances.

VR games can take advantage of the easier rendering in space environments because VR is so taxing on the system. Many of the best looking VR games take place in space, and a big reason Elite: Dangerous is successful is because it's loved by VR gamers. One of the reasons E:D looks so good in VR is because you can pump the supersampling up to values that would bog down your computer in any of the other simulation-style games with realistic graphics, but in E:D you can still run at 90fps in space. I guess it's another parallel to the original Elite, which also took advantage of easy rendering in space to have better graphics than other games at the time could handle.

One thing absolutely love about VR is that, I don't really worry about quality, as long as the text is readable @ 1.75x on the supersampling. Everything else can be set to low for all I care and somehow my brain magically would fill in all these gaps. This doesn't happen when I play it on my screen tho.

Well, in VR you don't have real life around you for comparison, so maybe that helps?
