Space games were a great thing because polygons were expensive for a computer to render, so much of the screen is black or something, and only a ship or two needed to be rendered to screen.

If this isn’t enough to convince you that space games are making a huge comeback, I don’t know what to tell you. But I hope you like space. And fidelity. Or at least have a cat named Fidelity.

Isn't that the crux of the matter? At one point space sims had a massive advantage over many other genres due to the hardware of the time and how space sims were rendered. But by the mid to late 90s hardware allowed all the assorted genres to catch up to space sims and display decent enemies and environments. There is never going to be that genre gap again which means any comeback has an uphill battle in getting noticed by the greater gaming public.

Ahahahaha, that was so stupid and boring. "holy poo poo or should I say unholy poo poo"...an actual line from the movie.

But if you want to see Sandi's breakout performance, your going to have to wait for American Satan 2.0 because her role got refactored.

LOL sour expression is totally warranted. Poor Sandi :(

Another issue with space games (they are not sims outside maybe stuff like kerbal) is that, in the end, if you're going to have dogfights, planes are just superior. You intuitively know how the planes handle, that there is an up-and-down (and that being above is usually better), get a better feeling of speed, scale, and inertia, and so on.

He bolts down all events, all creeds, and beliefs, and persuasions, all hard things visible and invisible, never mind how knobby; as an ostrich of potent digestion gobbles down bullets and gun flints. And as for small difficulties and worryings, prospects of sudden disaster, peril of life and limb; all these, and death itself, seem to him only sly, good-natured hits, and jolly punches in the side bestowed by the unseen and unaccountable old joker. That odd sort of wayward mood I am am speaking of, comes over a man only in some time of extreme tribulation; it comes in the very midst of his earnestness, so that what just before might have seemed to him a thing most momentous, now seems but a part of the general joke.

Databases were clearly going to be a huge issue, thanks to the crafting system, which had turned out awesome but also considerably more detailed than specced. A large pile of unique stats needed to be tracked on everything. Space was at a premium; character records were enormous. This caused problems when players moved between physical servers or across server processes, because of the time required to copy the data and the race conditions that could emerge.

What a fun problem CIG will have when they keep increasing complexity of ships and cargo and add nested instances.

VR games can take advantage of the easier rendering in space environments because VR is so taxing on the system. Many of the best looking VR games take place in space, and a big reason Elite: Dangerous is successful is because it's loved by VR gamers. One of the reasons E:D looks so good in VR is because you can pump the supersampling up to values that would bog down your computer in any of the other simulation-style games with realistic graphics, but in E:D you can still run at 90fps in space. I guess it's another parallel to the original Elite, which also took advantage of easy rendering in space to have better graphics than other games at the time could handle.

One thing absolutely love about VR is that, I don't really worry about quality, as long as the text is readable @ 1.75x on the supersampling. Everything else can be set to low for all I care and somehow my brain magically would fill in all these gaps. This doesn't happen when I play it on my screen tho.

Well, in VR you don't have real life around you for comparison, so maybe that helps?

Dear Backers and Citizens,
sadly, we have to announce another delay to the PU release of the much anticipated 3.0 patch and all it's groundbreaking features. Sadly, Sandi fired the only dev who knows how to operate the new delta patcher package manager after he asked here how the movie premiere went. As soon as his wrist has healed we found a new employee to take over his duty, we expect 3.0 to arrive in about two weeks.
