I will not shut up about the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I talk about them all the time and work them into every conversation I have. I built a shrine in my room for the yellow one who died because sadly no one noticed because she died around 9/11. Wanna see it?

I wouldn't quite say stronger than ever but it's true to form. Seasons good, suck on it haters.

They've been average episodes that have tried to cram too much in with too tenuous a thread running through them. If it doesn't get better this will be the worst season. But yeah, the worst season of curb is still pretty, pretty good

This was loving amazing. The waiter's answers, the Banks lie to the cop, the courtroom scene.

Best of the season so far.

This episode made me laugh more than the others this season but I can't help thinking this every week. Like it doesn't feel nearly as natural anymore and the convoluted setups rarely work out as well as they used to in previous seasons. This episode was called "Disturbance in the Kitchen" but I thought that whole plot line/setup had such a weak payoff in the end. I'm surprised they didn't call this one "The Fatwa Boys" or something.

That said.. bad Curb is still Curb so I'll take it.

I agree with this. Wasn't feeling it until Salman and then it got so much better. Elizabeth Banks was great too. Especially loved her conversation/spat with Susie.

This is total speculation but it feels like it's actually less improv than previous seasons? Like there are way more camera cuts between individuals with a lot more little snippets of dialogue that have clearly been fully scripted? Anyone know if that can be substantiated?

Anyway, agree that last ep was the best of the season so far, but still had too much going on. The restaurant manager, the honk at the cop, the yoohoo at the judge, the subtlety of a new car horn, the Fatwa boys, the front vs. back of mind, dangerous Larry -- all pretty funny ideas but too much for one episode. Feels like they have to rush through them just to try to squeeze them all in.

Some of the best parts of old Curb are Larry and Jeff (or Leon, or Funkman, etc.) just bullshitting about stuff that's not necessarily A Joke, which feels like has been cut in order to squeeze in more Jokes.

Yeah it does feel a bit less improvy which is hurting it a bit. This episode was pretty pretty good though and better than the last two. I think it’ll pick up. I still love when Larry refers to some annoyance or foible he wrote into Seinfeld episodes.

Just saw this season's first episode and all the characters are shouting THE WHOLE TIME. By the end of the episode that's not even an exaggeration at all, everyone is doing this unnatural shouting thing about each bad situation that's unfolding. It's like they all were told beforehand to turn up the volume and make sure there is no subtlety in the show, leaving it a bad parody of previous seasons. A tonal change definitely happened -- sad to see any unhelpful change to something great. I'll probably stick to exploring the old seasons instead of this new one.

The episode had two long drawn-out shower scenes of naked Larry David, a 70 year old near-billionaire who didn't have to do it, and the jokes they ended with didn't contribute much. So many scenes forgot to bring jokes; near the beginning I noticed it all felt like set up scenes with some minor rear end in a top hat behavior we're maybe supposed to laugh at, but a long pause between funny moments is not what I'm used to from this show.

Not saying anyone above is wrong about how much they liked it, just saying that to the others who felt like something was "off" this time you're not alone.

yeah totally agree, this is what I was thinking of when saying how there aren't (m)any scenes that are just the characters bullshitting, having a casual conversation. seems like every scene has to have A Situation that Larry can make An Unpopular Observation about, which ends up in everyone yelling and coming across as extremely scripted. this type of scene has always been a part of Curb and can be really funny, but it has to be balanced by some more subdued and mundane moments, which can be just as funny, but seem to be (mostly) absent so far in S9

Other things I noticed from episode 1:

- Dramatic pause and camera zoom then a really drawn out obligatory "pretty pretty prettay good" to prove to viewers that they're really watching Curb Your Enthusiasm, just without jokes this time

-Was something different about the production quality this season? I tried to check if they turned up the framerate to 60fps but no, it was something else. Everything seemed... brighter. I can imagine you'd get exactly the sort of different reactions from actors (strained faces, yelling, stressed out) that we saw if there was an extremely bright stage light pointed in their faces the whole time, for example. A big on set distraction would kill on the fly creativity.

In interviews I have read that a lot of care goes into the show to light it but make it feel like it is not actually lit with lights, so I don't think they'd just shine a spotlight on the people.

mobby_6kl

The light really doesn't feel very natural to me at all, not sure what's up with that. Some scenes just look like they're from a cheap porno. Also I think they got a drone for some establishing shots. Overall it's pretty good so far but definitely feels more forced than before, kind of like Top Gear was becoming before the incident.

I just watched all three episodes, and this feels like Curb to me. I think people who don't like it might be idealizing the past. It's no season 8, but any season without Cheryl to be a wet blanket on everything all the time is good to me.

There's a documentary on Netflix called "Long Shot" that's a 40-minute thing about how a guy charged with murder got cleared partly because of a Curb episode.

I remember reading about that ages ago. The story, not the Netfllix special. It was the hooker-to-use-car-pool-lane episode, right? And the guy was in the crowd at the Dodgers game? Spoiled in case someone wants to watch the Netflix thing but doesn't know the story. No idea if Curb's involvement is in anyway a twist. That's awesome that that story was put on film. I'll have to watch it at some point.

Yeah, that's the one. It's presented in a very straightforward way so it's not bad but pretty much gives you what it says on the tin and nothing else. Still, a pretty interesting watch for a Curb fan.
