I saw Mitski and Palehound in Hollywood last night and it was the greatest show I've ever seen. I'm still freaking out about it.

We got to the venue a little late because we got caught in traffic but we still ended up catching most of Palehound and hooooly crap I'm glad we made it when we did. I still caught all my favorite songs (Room, If You Met Her) and they were playing with so much more intensity than I expected. Ellen was big and loud and shredding in a dang muumuu and made my gay lil heart flutter. I bought a shirt from a cute person at the merch table during the intermission.

Mitski was mindblowing. She had the most unreal stage presence, just standing still in the spotlight commanding the entire venue. At one point she kneeled down on stage and just looked over the crowd slowly and people were losing it. I might have been the most hyped person there because I was jumping up and down like crazy and singing every single song as loud as I could while most folks were doing the lame-o indie head bob thing. Their loss!! The guitarist was doing some wild effects and even managed to nearly get a sax tone out of his guitar for Happy which was insanely impressive to me, and the drummer had a ridiculous bass trigger that would rattle the entire theater (which thankfully he used in moderation).

Mitski played the last handful of songs solo. She had her hair up in a neat bun but let it down and picked up the guitar and it was just so good. I cried when she played A Burning Hill as her outro and again when she played Last Words of a Shooting Star for the encore.

I'm so exhausted at work right now because I didn't get home until after midnight but it was so worth it aaaaaaaaaaaa thank you for indulging me and reading my personal diary, namaste.

I mean, it’s not like this came out while they were still a band. I’ve definitely not felt comfortable about supporting CC post-Alice just because it diminished her role when she was an integral part. Now I have something I can point to for people who still support Ethan.

Ethan Kath being a huge piece of poo poo was pretty obvious when he said this after Alice left CC

quote:

I think it can be empowering for her [Glass] to be in charge of her own project. It should be rewarding for her considering she didn’t appear on Crystal Castles’ best known songs.

there is some hosed up stuff out there too about her current partner supposedly being abusive but I'm not sure if I believe it since she herself hasn't said anything about it

apparently she's playing a show tonight like a mile from me too, ahh wish I knew about that earlier

Crystal Castles cancelled all their upcoming tour dates except one, at a music festival I'm going to this weekend. I wasn't going to see them anyway because I'd already seen them before and they're playing at the same time as someone else I want to see, but if they do end up playing that, I hope they get booed off stage.

Super jealous. I saw them live back when they were first popular with Lisztomania/1901 but I honestly think Ti Amo is the best thing they've ever done.

Yeah, I feel bad for the new gal because 1) she’s likely in a similar position to Alice with regard to abuse and control from Ethan, and 2) she probably joined CC viewing it as an opportunity and a starting point, and now she’s embroiled in all of Ethan’s baggage.

I saw them with Edith last year at a festival. She's a great vocalist and has a lot of energy, but yeah, I feel bad for her too if she's in the position Alice was in.

Yeah, Alice's statement about leaving Crystal Castles seemed fairly plausible to me, and the nastiness of Ethan's response basically confirmed what she said. Her latest statement is sad, but not surprising. I hope Ethan's career is over.

I agree with you about feeling uncomfortable supporting them after Alice left. There was something off-putting about his "I'll just replace Alice" approach. It read to me as "female leads are interchangeable," and Alice basically confirms it: "But he often told me how replaceable I was. He’d even tell me that he was actively looking for someone to replace me."

I saw Wilco like 10 years ago and they were great. It was right after Sky Blue Sky came out, so they were playing all the stuff I wanted to hear. Of course, that was before they released a few albums in a row that I didn't care for, so I don't know how they'd be now.

I Am Trying To Break Your Heart would probably be a good intro, as would Kicking Television (the live album) because that'll give you a fairly comprehensive look at the kind of stuff they play live. I guess if you're particularly enamored with a song on there, check out the album it's on.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is pretty much universally considered their masterpiece, but there's also a lot of great material on literally every album of theirs that came before it and after it until Sky Blue Sky. Then after that is when I stopped being into them, although the first track on The Whole Love loving ruled even if I didn't care for the rest of the album:

They also did a live set on KEXP, which is usually a pretty great intro to artists. Although they play a lot of newer material in this one, which isn't really my thing so much.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USjuOWLyWIQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYhQ2ReEyvQ

That's 2 albums in a row of theirs that had 1 great song but the rest was totally forgettable IMO (the other one being The Whole Love).

I listened to Star Wars once and I remember reading a review that praised it for sounding more like old experimental Wilco, but man that album did absolutely nothing for me.

And Schmilco, well...I might've listened to that one once? Or maybe I never listened to it? If I did listen to it, it left no impression on me either.

They kicked rear end despite some technical problems, but the crowd was oddly mellow. I was expecting to have zero personal space and people jumping on stage or something but everyone really kept to themselves. They might have gone nuts the night before at the Vic and didn't have the energy to do it again for this surprise show. Or maybe we're just all getting old.
