Hey guys, is this a good TV for the money? Kind of near the top of my budget, just for gaming and movies - the usual stuff. Just checking if there is anything fatally wrong with that brand or type, or if anyone knows something that is poo poo-hot for similar money.

Also, I don't know much about soundbars and how they work. If the TV doesn't have a headphone jack, do they just pair together through bluetooth? Or do I have to pair them each time etc. Also, what's a good 'budget' soundbar, like £40-£50 quid, or are they all terrible.

Cheers!

I can't find much on that specific model, but many/most LG models sold in the USA use an IPS type panel, which will have an image with less contrast, and black levels that are more like a dark gray. Which would not be optimal for dark scenes in movies. However, AFAIK LG panels have pretty good (low) input lag in game mode.

Something like a mid-range Samsung would probably have better picture quality* and be just as good for gaming.

Don’t recall ever seeing TCL in the UK, no Vizio either. Pretty much just the mainstream brands like Sony, LG, Samsung and the ‘supermarket’ brands like Beko etc. Maybe one of those will be a rebadge of something good, but probably not.

If I’m right about the model # conversions from the UK rtings says that Sony is a direct competitor and not as good as the Samsung, but I’m not 100%. Both better than an IPS panel for sure.

On one hand, it was probably one of the last great 1080p LCDs out there and I still love the picture of mine. With some content, I almost prefer its picture to my OLED.

On the other hand, it's still only a 1080p SDR display.

You can tell the owners generally love them because there are so few on sale today on the used market.

I would say no more than $400. It will still challenge today's displays in playing 1080p SDR content, but all things being equal I would probably prefer even a TCL P605/7 for most uses.

That motion engine in the W900A though, man wish I could just bolt it to my LG C6.

My current TV has developed a fault and while distracting I can live with it for the moment, but I'm worried it might completely die on me soon. So I've read some of this thread and done some researching but I'm still rather confused. Therefore I could do with some help choosing a new TV because I find it all horribly complex despite googling information for hours.

I'm primarily going to use it for gaming (I have a PS4 Pro for 4K games) with the occasional movie or TV show via netflix or whatever. I found a few that I think suit my needs but I'm not too sure about things like input lag or other details, hopefully if anyone has used or know any of these so they might be able to guide me that would be very helpful.

The first is a Sony Bravia KD49XE8005. It seems to review well enough, and I saw some mention while googling of people using these for their PS4s:
https://www.johnlewis.com/sony-bravia-kd49xe8005-led-hdr-4k-ultra-hd-smart-android-tv-49-with-freeview-hd-youview-black/p3167698

My second option is a Samsung UE49MU6500. This also seems to have positive reviews but it's a curved screen that I've never used before, so I'm a little worried about that. It's slightly more expensive than the Sony too:
https://www.johnlewis.com/samsung-u...tified/p3190451

The third is a Samsung UE49MU6400 which I think might be the flat version of the one above (in silver):
https://www.johnlewis.com/samsung-ue49mu6400-hdr-4k-ultra-hd-smart-tv-49-with-tvplus-freesat-hd-active-crystal-colour-silver/p3215475
Also i think this is the same one on Amazon a bit cheaper:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-MU6400-49-Inch-SMART-Ultra/dp/B071DH3HDS

If anyone has a better suggestion than these then that would be greatly appreciated as I have very little idea. Also I realise that with a TV it is very much is a situation where you get much better the more you pay, but the price of these is about my limit, and the size would be around 50" or so (slightly smaller or larger would be fine though).

Also, I found an oddity I don't understand while looking on various websites for prices and information. The Sony I listed above is KD49XE8005 but on Amazon I found what I thought is the same TV labelled as KD49XE8004 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06X3WP1NK/).

I looked on the Sony website for information (https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/televisions/XE8005-XE8066-XE8077-XE8088-XE8096-XE8099-Series/specifications) and as far as I can tell the 8004 and 8005 have all the same specifications, so I'm rather confused there.

It's possible that these are identical and just badged differently for stores to prevent price matching [do they do that in the UK?]. I was going to suggest you stretch to the XE9000 series but then I noticed it's almost twice as much so maybe not. The 8000E/800E looks decent, you can read details here if you haven't seen this yet.

Picking a TV these days seems complex because it almost always involves tradeoffs, possibly excepting situations where you have the budget for OLED or top-top level LCD.

At least in the USA, the Sony model you mention has an IPS display, which will provide better (wider) viewing angle, but relatively poor black levels, which would be an issue for viewing in a dark room, or dark scenes in movies.
http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/x800e

The Samsung models should have a better black level, but a narrower viewing angle.
http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/mu6300

They should both be OK for gaming, at least in terms of acceptable input lag.

Thanks to both of you for the links to that rtings site, that's given me some helpful information, rather more in depth and complicated than I expected, but this is good because I'm learning too!

I'm not sure if they do the price matching thing Qirex mentioned here, it's possible I suppose, I've just never really thought about that sort of thing, sorry. An XE9000 would be nice as I've seen it recommended by some gaming websites for a good TV when I was searching, but sadly as you say it's out of my price range.

The IPS screen mentioned by Number_6 is interesting and something I've not actually read much about, and I'm guessing my current TV has one of those though, but considering I sit pretty much directly in front of it (and only myself will use it) I'm not hugely fussed about a wider viewing angle.

I tried searching on that website for my current TV, an LG LB550V (http://www.lg.com/uk/tvs/lg-42LB550V), but couldn't find it there (probably because it's some years old and I guess not a very good one.) which is a shame because I'd like to have seen some detailed specifications so I could compare the ones I'm thinking about buying against it so I could more easily understand the information.

Number_6 posted:

I did read through this but then I got to the bottom of the article, and it listed the models and the variants, but apparently in the UK that model is known as the MU6100 and the one I was looking at that I linked is the MU6400. This threw me off a bit, I didn't even realise the TVs might have completely different numbers across territories. I did some digging on the site (by looking at all the Samsungs listed :v: ) and found this one:
http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/mu7000

In the Variants list it does show the MU6400 as the UK model, so I think this is the review for that one, but please correct me if I'm wrong. Also this is not meant to be a criticism, I appreciate you taking the time to respond and link these to me so I can research more.

Lastly, this review near the bottom of the article does make mention of comparable TVs, the first of which is the Sony I was interested in, and says this:

quote:

The X800E is a similarly priced LED TV made by Sony. It's a similarly featured TV, but it's a bit brighter and has a wider viewing angle. If you sit directly in front of your TV most of the time, and you want the best picture quality in a dark room, the MU7000 is a better pick. If you watch a lot of sports and have a wider living room, go for the X800E.

So, from the sounds of it and reading the reviews the Samsung is probably my better option, unless I'm mistaken about things? I am still open to any other TVs if there are some in a similar price range, the manufacturer doesn't matter too much to me (I've seen good things about Vizio's but they appear to be only USA only, sadly).

One last thing, in my initial post for the MU6400, I posted two links because I think they are the same, but I'm unsure because the one on Amazon is much cheaper than the one on John Lewis (which is usually very competitively priced), so I just don't want to be missing something and order the wrong TV. Obviously I'd go for the cheapest if they are the same.

Apologies for the endless words and links, I am rather rambling and worry about everything. Thanks for all the help!

Question that hoping someone can answer because I might just have to buy a new TV tomorrow. I've got a 4 year old Vizio 60" 1080p which worked fine last night.

It has a cable box plugged in and a Shield TV, both via HDMI. And a Vizio 5.1 soundbar with digital optical.

Tonight I turn it on and Netflix audio sounds like it's a slow motion demon from hell. Picture is totally fine. I switch inputs to my cable box and the audio slow motion demon sound is there. So I turn it off, back on, and sound is fine. Boot up Netflix again and the audio goes back to poo poo. Process of elimination, I unplug the soundbar and use the TV speakers and it's still the lovely audio. Turn it off, boot up Hulu now, audio is fine, cable is fine, switch to Netflix and audio is now poo poo for itself, Hulu, and my cable box. Then I just tried Hulu after turning it back on, and the sound was like fast forward, switch inputs to cable box and same thing. Tried another TV and no issues. Is the TV's audio just giving out or what?

The computer recognizes the connection, going as far as to adjust screen specifically for LG. The TV recognizes a cable connection but says there's no signal. Is there something I'm missing? It sounds like a problem on the TV end of things, but we can't figure out why it won't display the screen.

Buy warranty. I'm not sure how it stacks up in the states but in Canada, you just cant beat Costco because the 5 year warranty is only 99 bucks even on the most expensive TV they have. I think its 29.99 if the TV is under 500, 59 or 69 500-999, and 99 for over 1000. Walmart isn't bad either, my friend had a 32" smart TV for his kids room, netflix started asking them to sign in every time for some reason. They had the warranty, and when they called, they sent them out a check for the value of the TV no questions asked. TV works fine aside from that and they dont have to send it back or anything. I think thats a win.

What I came in here for. This is my current setup. I am hopefully soon gonna be upgrading the TV, and I wanna wall mount it and ditch the whole unit I have there now, and I was thinking of just having custom shelves built into the wall for all the devices. I've had a couple of ideas on that and I want some input. I've thought of having them all put in the corner in a vertical column so everything is tucked away nicely, this would please my OCD. I've also thought of having a shelf made for each individual device and laying it out like platforms in a Mario game or something underneath the TV. Or I could just have a couple of long shelves put in, and it just came to me now the idea to have them taper out at the ends so my towers fit up against them at the angle they should be. Thoughts/ideas?

Welp, the problem I have my TV has increased:

It's a bad picture but those three white blobs are the issue. Originally it was the one white blob on top which had a small circle inside it, but overnight it added two more. The small circle I mentioned has apparently tripled itself too and moved to the bottom of the screen (which I didn't picture because it's very faint) so I'm expecting some white blobs to appear there soon.

I can live with it for the moment but now I'm worried the TV will just outright die or get covered in blobs soon. I've been looking up some more TVs this evening but I think the two I mentioned in my previous posts - Sony KD49XE8005 (X800E in the USA) or a Samsung UE49MU6400 (MU700 in the USA, at least I think so) - are the ones I'm in the best situation to get. I'm still unsure which one to go for though as both seem good for what I want (mostly gaming) so I'll have to think hard about it.

Unless you need a TV rated for high altitude, make sure you can get something that has an input or look for something that hooks up that does (TiVo, old rear end VCR, switcher).

They run like sub $40 on monoprice and may add some input lag (https://www.monoprice.com/Category?c_id=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011406) though if it has a tuner then a TCL and an old VCR or RF converter would be my guess
