Recently I've been hearing a lot of people complaining about pineapple causing physical pain to their mouths. I've eaten 100s of pounds of pineapple in my life. Just the other day I cut one open and cleaned the core, sucking the juice out. I've made homemade Tepache before. Never once have I felt any pain or discomfort. I come to the experts to try to understand if this is another case of internet hyperbole or if my mouth is defective (in a good way).

In addition to being super acidic, pineapple juice has an enzyme that breaks down protein and by extension you epithelium. So it's literally digesting the lining of your mouth and your tongue.

I mean yeah but I've never felt physical pain, a mild tingling at most.

That seems like an excessive amount of beans and cheese even on toast. And I like beans and cheese. Albeit generally separately.

Different people have different reactions to enzymes in fruit. There are legit people who wince and go "ow!" when eating fresh pineapple. Source: was on tour of pineapple farm with woman who had never had fresh pineapple before, and who had to rinse and spit vigorously after trying a bite. The rest of us looked on in .

Pineapples contain an enzyme that cleaves proteins, thats why its a tenderizer. I'll spare you the jpg of that guy that ate them all day.

I missed taking a picture, but I made the white trashiest sandwich this morning at work. Toasted brioche bun with fried jalapeño spam, cheese, french fries, two over easy eggs, topped with heinz ketchup. It was amazing enough to make another next week.
