CIG should just remove all the First Person making GBS threads stuff and get on making an Elite clone with a COD-esque story about Squadron 42.

Beet Wagon posted:Isn't it kind of a nonissue whether or not CIG has made the planets full size since there's no actual game and never will be? It's one problem of trying to discuss Star Citizen as if it were subject to the rules governing human reason Star Citizen is the best game in the 'verse, just look at all these fantastic real features But how do you explain issues #4 through #19? Also most of that stuff you wrote about doesn't exist. Which features that's actually in the game do you find so immensely impressive? Well just for one example, there's the detailed texture of NPC hand that you can see in screenshot here. Also there's the real world simulated economy and AI tech, plus the benefits from subsumption and the leveraging of Cloud Technology That's a list of features that have all either been done (for real) in this list of games, or they've basically confirmed they've stopped working on them. Even if they were implemented, wouldn't features like 100% I-can't-believe-it's-not-PVP be subject to the same- Hey idiots why are you discussing this as though it were real lol Look at this new screenshot

I think that's normal for animation work -- I am not an animator (I have done little animation work and only as an amateur), but that looks like they are (also) testing for camera animations eg when entering and exiting that ship. In which case, the camera is that model's head.

ewe2 posted:A brief Google turned up this: Yeah, that's what boggles my mind. I am using a RamDisk on one of my workstations, so a certain amount of RAM acts as a cache...every file accessed is moved to RAM and the applications read and write to it in RAM, while the software syncs it to the SSD. If the assigned space fills up, the oldest file accessed gets dropped from the RamDisk. Disadvantage: if power is lost/your OS crashes, there is no way to sync cache and SSD. Also, the scenarios where you can feel a difference are small, since many applications buffer often needed file contents in RAM anyway, but it still helps in situations where lots of (the same) files are accessed which normally wouldn't get loaded into RAM. It's impressive that Intel managed to gently caress this up.

Especially where particles are concerned. Billboard based effects don't have that problem. In fact, it's easy to see this problem if you were to fly into clouds and go the the external camera. The ship should be flying into the volumetric clouds. If it doesn't, that's the problem. ----------------

ewe2 posted:It's essentially a hardware version of a ramdisk, in a DIMM/SSD form. He details the speed problem in that blog link (and flogs business analysis via pay per download, ugh). But the layman's version is, why the hell pay that kind of premium for something you can already do in software which is still faster than Optane? Optane's strength isn't its transfer rates but its IOPS. Most SSDs fall flat on their face when it comes to random 4K reads and writes. Optane will still pull random 4K reads off the Xpoint at over a gig a second, an order of magnitude faster than the fastest NAND device. The 900p is without question the fastest commercial mass storage device in existence right now. It's rapidly approaching the price of NAND flash and it's down to about $1.30/GB.

"Atmosphere". Pressure is a function of gravity, which happens to keep the gas hugging the dirt and not boiling off into space. Those planets need to be massive to retain the kind of atmosphere that makes it a shirt sleeve environment for people, 'Merlin'. Pick up a book, dickhead.

Potato Salad posted:Yeah, retain atmo and support liveable atmosphere are on very different scales. I've been waiting for them to actually publish something before I get into the various calculations, but fundamentally, you can't simple 'scale things' in a universe and have the simulation _work_, mainly because people are terrible at scale and really don't understand how it works. Even handwaving gravitation with 'goo' starts to move you into 'magic' territory, but unless they've engineered the planets - and that alone would make most of the ships obsolete - they're loving with their own universe generation. After that, all talk of 'fidelity' is crunchy bollocks.
