I suspect the Zora sequence is in there because they wanted that to be the 'default' first dungeon for people who don't have a preference, as it makes a good first impression. It's really the only thing like that in the game.

I thought the approach to Zora's Domain was great. One of the things that's really cool about BotW is how groups of enemies set up in defensive positions around points of interest in places that would, theoretically, force people to go through them to get where they want to go. Of course, Link can climb almost anything so most of the time you can just bypass these challenges.

With Zora's Domain though, you have to actually battle your way to your destination. It shakes things up by removing (or at least seeming to remove) your ability to shortcut your way past the difficulty. Plus you get some great views along the way.

I guess that makes sense. Maybe it was more the cutscenes and the rain that got on my nerves. Maybe if they would have covered the walls in ice instead of making it rain the whole time.

Unless you're literally playing for more than 24 hours at a time there is nothing painful about putting the joycons on the Switch when you're doing playing. Joycons batteries getting low after 40+ hours of playing, dock them on the Switch for a few hours when you aren't playing due to sleep/work/whatever.

Until you finish the game and find out there's a secret meter that goes up/down based on various in game actions and good luck figuring out how it works without a guide.

Try playing March of the Black Queen on the SNES first. It's older but slightly less absurd. Still full of vague-as-hell mechanics though.

the best part is with high Lawful frame you get ALL the cool rebellion characters, whereas with a Chaotic frame you mainly just get your gruff badass dad, a werewolf, and a Satan Knight. Sure, the latter team sounds cooler, but you do get way more people to recruit in the former.

I think this is where a large part of the divide comes in. I know a lot of people can't stand the graphics of early 3D games but I actually find them charming.

Mario 64 also had a lot of visual diversity and good level design, which helps with the look of it. Despite having flat textures, levels like Boo's Mansion or Cool, Cool Mountain still look really good to me because of how well all their pieces fit together.

I'm glad they force Nessie to wear goggles now-a-days in modern Mario titles.

Captain Toad's presence makes since due to his characterization in the game (an explorer out exploring), also he is one of the more recent titles released and is relevant. Nintendo just assumes that fans actually play their games and would appreciate the reference.

That said, my copy of Captain Toad is still on my shelf, unplayed. Well, I got it used, so unplayed by me at least, haha. However, playing through Odyssey has made me want to go back and finish Sunshine, play through Galaxy (hate Wii motion controls, so never got around to playing it), and connect my WiiU to my main TV and play Captain Toad since it gets no play time on the TV in my basement.

About the whole BOTW/Mario thing, for me I think they're hard to compare. Breath of the Wild offers an extremely free ability to approach the game however you like. There are some challenges in Mario Odyssey where you can accomplish the same thing in different ways but obviously Mario has a much more limited tool set, which is good and preferable for what the game is.

For me, Breath of the Wild was more about the freedom to explore the game world in whatever direction I like at my own pace- I left the plateau and ran immediately to Ganon, had a laugh at how little damage I could do with what I had, and then went off into the world and ignored objectives for about 40 hours. Once I had my fill, I beat the game and I couldn't imagine replaying it until enough time has passed that I've significantly forgotten it, enough to make the adventure feel new for me again.

Super Mario Odyssey has a focus on progression, but there is tons to do and find even after you've beaten the game. In Breath of the Wild I personally did not like the combat because I found it unrewarding and so I spent effort to avoid combat as much as I could in my exploration. SMO I like better in a gameplay sense because it's just good, fast-paced platforming used as a basis for a fun scavenger hunt. It's going to take me some time to 100% it in bits and pieces, and even when I'm done I'm sure I could play again from the beginning and have just as much fun since the basic mechanics feel so good to me.

I think one of the reasons the games have been compared is that they both are significantly more ambitious in scope than previous titles in their series. Breath of the Wild is a huge shakeup to the Zelda formula. SMO is not to the Mario formula, but it offers more to collect and see than any previous title in the series, and some reviewers compared the number of moons in the game to the number of Korok seeds in BOTW. Both games are wonderful, very different experiences and are part of a wonderful first year for the Switch.

edit: Something I realized the games do have in common for me- in both games I keep getting distracted by seeing something in a direction I wasn't intended to go, detouring to check it out, and now I've done 6 things that were not my initial goal and oh what's that over there again?

The development division that did all the Wario and Rhythm Heaven stuff was merged with the main (Mario, Zelda etc.) development division in September 2015 as part of then-new President Kimishima's organizational restructure, so it's kind of hard to tell...

They had a producer role on all the 3D Metroids, so I guess Samus Returns would be their latest thing, sort of.
