If I remember right Heyward was offered more money by the Cardinals but the Cubs included opt outs.

Why do teams ever give opt out clauses. It's literally impossible for them to work out in the team's favor...

its the same reason teams offer no movement clauses or release clauses: the player is willing to take less money in salary in exchange for some more options later on. teams love saving money on salary, so

I cannot believe that whole thing is a true story, it's amazing.

Some people are just loving made to play baseball. Gattis took 4 years off from playing, then went back to college and hit .403 with 11 homers.

Another spring commute

Not to pile misery on the Dodgers but Kershaw has an opt out after 2018 and I have to wonder if it's a ring in 2018 or bust for the Dodgers convincing Kershaw not to jump ship ring chasing. He is going to be 30 next year.

That was his first year back and he was drafted in the 23rd round that same year. He took 4 years off baseball came back for 1 year and was drafted, that's insane.

It's also a great reminder that you can't tell somebody's mind state from looking at them. I mean, that seems extra dumb coming from me, who is 6' 1" and pretty gregarious and suffered from clinical depression too, but you look at a dude like Gattis and never in a million years would I think he had to check himself into a psych facility for suicidal thoughts.

May I interest you in the glorious sport of hockey as well?

e: I wish basketball started a couple months later, namely so its playoffs would start a week or two after the NHL's does. Right now it's MLB playoffs -> Heart of the NFL season -> March Madness -> Heart of both NHL and NBA seasons -> summer doldrums until MLB starts heating up.

I'm happy for guys like Beltran and the young guys like Altuve and Correa, but I think I'm happiest for Gattis. He's had a rough life and I'm sure that ring means the world to him for what it represents.

Offseason doldrums? NFL unwatchable? Hockey and soccer not good enough for you? I'm going to run a goon be-a-player in Out-of-the-Park 18 for anyone interested. Once I get the final kinks out of the setup worked out I'll post a signup thread, hopefully later this week. So, if you're interested start thinking about what kind of fake baseball player YOU want to be!

Poll question for anyone interested: would you all prefer to do a modern game, or historical? If historical, what era? Reminder: the farther back we go, the fewer players we can inject without breaking the game.

I'd vote 80s if it doesn't break the game too much. If it does then just go modern.

Yikes:

One thing I did not include in the Correa story: He revealed that he injured his right thumb in #Astros’ walkoff celebration in Game 2 ALCS.
Correa said he received numerous injections in thumb, revealing series of needle marks. Still had .866 OPS in playoffs and .817 OPS in WS.
