gradenko_2000 posted:does China's actions in Africa and the Spratlys constitute imperialism? Chinese neocolonialism is imperialism in an abstracted, Leninist sense - where imperialism isn't simply an overt political control of the periphery, but the way that capital itself projects into the colonized world to exploit its productive forces. This can lead people who are extremely weak on theory to do stupid poo poo like compare Chinese neocolonialism to Japanese imperialism. They're not the same thing, but the problem of neocolonialism is its insidious appearance of innocuousness.

In that sense British imperialism created the need for a Great Leap Forward.

my ex in shaoxing has to pay $150k a year in rent just so she keep her 200 square foot textile store in business, and that industry has high and low points every year. she went immediately back to work after she had her son partially out of need. the chinese government would not allow her to name her son "Amir" (her husband is pakistani and that's the name they agreed upon) so that's part of the reason why she went to the US to have him. many chinese cities have gotten ridiculously unaffordable in the last 10 years in short, chinese socialism loving rules and we should all be subjected to it get that OUT of my face has issued a correction as of 20:27 on Nov 11, 2017 |

the problem with the affinity system is that it doesn't really represent a player choice, where you sacrifice somethign to get another thing it's entirely based on which path down the tech tree you take, and because not all techs are equally valuable, you end up getting railroaded down certain paths in concept, it's not bad, and there's acutally some interesting ideas: each affinity gets a unique tile improvement, and they're all different. In practice, they're all trash, you're better off sticking with farms + mines, and the combat system overly favors ranged units.

they're also the biggest cucks in the game, which is saying something, because most of the factions are pretty cuck a blank panther civ would have owned, but we weren't that lucky

Bip Roberts posted:Is there a Code of Honor Planet of the Blacks style faction? All the factions/"backers" are colonists just arriving to not-Proxima Centauri b, so they aren't SMAC/Star Trek-like exaggerated civilizations yet. Africa is represented mostly by the People's African Union, though northern Africa is described as having cozied up to the Franco-Iberian European Union. Neither are remotely as interesting as Morgan Industries or Peacekeeping Forces. Autism Sneaks has issued a correction as of 05:25 on Nov 12, 2017 |

Gonna dissent here, Civ:BE is kinda neat. Like a more upbeat, optimistic (but still grim) SMAC. The civics are cool as hell, Space Africa and Pacific guys are interesting in their background philosophies, and I've never met a tech quote I didn't like. The affinity counter actually mattering kicks in way too late and trade routes are a loving mess though.

HerraS posted:da, this is true, embrace paradox games Unmodded Hoi4 kinda sucks tbh 90% of the countries have the same exact national focus, and you can't really do anything thing interesting with the major powers. It feels really hollow, and it's kinda pathetic how modders have basically improved the game in every conceivable way with really obvious changes.
