Tsaedje posted:

Liberty are actually being really sensible and saying things like 'you can't expect everything to change overnight because we bought into a sport that has a lot of catching up to do, but we're putting in the investment to make that happen'. Remember Bernie literally had no marketing department for a multi billion dollar business.

Having a coherent brand identity does actually matter when you're trying to sell something to sponsors and new fans, and some of the stuff they've done is actually quite clever if you ignore the marketingese and design document bollocks.

Having a simple big block of a logo lets it sit beside all the different corporate sponsors' logos without distracting from them while still making everything seem up to date and unified. The old logo is cool but it's definitely getting on a bit in a sport that sells itself on being cutting edge. The new one is kinda boring but that's actually by design.

They've deliberately gone for a primary typeface that looks distinctive and modern and works across devices.
The secondary fonts will be mainly for posters and signage and the like and are good contemporary takes on retro styles, though I'm not personally a fan of the aesthetic of F1 Turbo.

Yes I'm taking my new red text seriously

Counterpoint: It's a poo poo logo. Just go to Twitter or Facebook and check out how it looks like a blurry red blotch at the small size next to their posts. The number 1 rule of logo design is make it distinct at any size.

Also maybe F1 under Bernie could have used extra salespeople but don't get silly, F1's branding was fine. He clearly employed designers, F1 has a pretty good website, it's not like Bernie was uploading updates with Dreamweaver. The TV graphics are also among the best in sports broadcasting.

Crazy, wonder what he could've done with a marketing department.

At the end of the day, though, the problem y'all are going to have is that you've so childishly whined about every sensible change that Liberty has made that it's impossible to take you seriously ever again.

The logo was rear end and designed by some Portland hipster who has never seen any sort of race ever who admitted the previous one was timeless and this one will look dated two years from now. Lol if you think the new logo is good.

They made the new logo to make the "digital" marketing better.
Only, when you look at it at a reduced size (read: every way of seeing it on mobile) it just looks like the letter n

It's objectively poor. Not that it actually matters all too much, but it is.

Sean Bratches, F1’s commercial chief and a former ESPN executive, was defensive about the revamp, which disposes of a globally-recognised logo in use since 1993. “We are trying to reposition F1 from a purely motorsport company to a media and entertainment brand with the heart and soul of a race car driver in the middle of it,” he said.

Alright, Astoundingly Ugly Baby, this one is for you.

Stroll outscored McLaren by a grand total of 10 points. If you make a 50 dollar donation to a motorsport charity (open wheel preferred), I'll reduce your sentence to a month. Otherwise you can eat a 10 month probe.

You have two weeks.

Would it be okay if I donated $50 to one of the FIA Foundation charities?

New logo is fine, new main typeface is good but the really bold one (turbo?) already looks dated. The other is fine.

What’s more interesting from that article is what it looks like they want to do with event branding and bringing the “Formula 1” name and image a bit more to the forefront.

The logo is fine. It looks like “F1” to me and is pretty straightforward. F1s logos have always been mediocre at best - perhaps they should have emulated the Americans sooner because the NASCAR logo (to use an example) kicks rear end.
