I'm refreshing rapidly, the deficit hawks have been holding out for the last 15 minutes and could, COULD kill the tax bill. Edit: nevermind, welp. 15 minute vote was held out for an hour though! facialimpediment fucked around with this message at 23:34 on Nov 30, 2017 |

McConnell wants it voted on ASAP because it has to happen before the government shuts down and this is clearly the most important thing Congress can do right now.

The only good thing that can come of the tax bill is that I'll get a tax break, while Trump voters will get a tax increase. Unfortunately, so will millions of people who don't deserve to pay more taxes.

The best part about this bill is how people can avoid taxes by becoming their own business. I already have a passthrough LLC, so I'll probably leverage that to become a subcontractor to my current company. Job creation!

smertrioslol posted:Why does it require more than a simple majority? Standard Senate votes can be filibustered by the minority, which takes 60 votes to get past. smertrioslol posted:Why does it require more than a simple majority? Republicans want to use a mechanism called budget reconciliation to pass it with a simple majority, but this requires that the bill not add to the budget. They passed a budget earlier this year that would free up $1.5T in funding, so their tax cuts can't cost more than that. Unfortunately for Republicans, the tax bill raises the deficit by more than that amount. Deficit hawks have proposed something called a trigger, which would automatically raise taxes if the economic growth generated by the tax bill doesn't meet a certain target by a certain point as a means to offset the additional cost of the cuts. The parliamentarian, the non-partisan referee of the senate, has ruled that this is insufficient to offset the deficit increase caused by the bill, which means that it can't be passed under budget reconciliation rules and must be passed with a 60 vote majority.

Note that the rules of the senate can be changed with 51 votes (well, 50 actually with Pence). Normally removing the filibuster would be considered one of those crossing the rubicon moments but they already stole a Supreme Court seat and are confirming newly minted lawyers to be federal judges so...
