Finishing the game with everyone else's continues
I don't blame MoMA for not trying, though I disagree with the notion you could conceivably argue that the game's development is in a good place right now in a way that would be even remotely convincing to any but the most blinkered of individuals. It's fine to have faith in what's being done (to a point), but even dismissing the arguments about the financials for CIG you can't call what's come out so far a positive sign of progress. There's so many promises made about things to come in the future but the features that are in are so fundamentally broken it's difficult to fathom how they're just going to one day go "Oh look it's all working now" simply because they've been adding stuff without fixing anything which is breaking things even more. This is the barest surface of the argument that the entire project is messed up.

It's a game that at its core features travel from point A to point B as one of the things people will likely be doing the most in the game, and the game struggles with even managing that without doing something like violently ejecting a crew member into space, or mangling them for no reason, or the ship just plain loving exploding for no reason. It's a game where we've seen someone get out of their bunk, and with the goal of walking from point A to point B died in their doorway for no good reason at all. It's a game full of doors, but the doors are either the greatest hindrance or bypassed by simply rubbing up against them till you clip through them. All of this at 15 to 20 frames per second on a good day when there's not too many people in the server, which defeats the purpose of the game since it is at its core meant to be a game featuring degrees of socialising with other players in the form of alliances, trades and conflict.

What has been released at this point is just unacceptable when set against the metric of time spent on it. You cannot hope to convince anyone here that they're being too harsh on this game and its developers when after so many years all they've done is just dump whatever they had at the time at people's feet and ask for more money.

Well, money is fungible, while his particular 1700 bucks may have been used on half a week worth of cocaine, those are still 1700 potential dollars that could be refunded to smarter people.

CIG has gotten this far by implying (falsely, of course) that ALL games are this hosed during pre-alpha, and the backers repeat it like good little soldiers. They think they're seeing the sausage being made.

I've worked on enough poo poo to know that almost nothing that runs like this during any phase of development is suddenly going to spin like a top because of some golden code they layered in. The basest foundation of the game does not work. Land claim sticks won't fix that.

Try as hard as anyone might, but predictions based on CIG's finances are nonsensical because ... get this ... no one here has access to CIG's finances. Not even Bootcha as a former investor (because they would have shown him projections, a business plan, etc, but nothing remotely close to financial statements).

Believe it or not, I'm not shilling for CIG. I have no need - CIG is making millions of dollars on their own without the help of shills. Yeah, I've dicked around here (who hasn't), but even if I were to put at least 50% effort into attempting to post a reasoned rebuttal/opinion based on my actual industry/career skill-sets and experiences, it wouldn't be met with anything other than "ban MoMA" or "your parents are dead." Which is fine because we're all dead and gay and it's a stupid video game - all that jazz.

Are you crawling back into your “nobody understands me or gives me the time of day, I want to contribute but it’d just be met with hate and goon rage”?

Just be chill, friend. I still don’t believe you have a dime in this game, but you just love to egg people on, especially Derek. And that’s fine because you’ve got a 99% rate of return on any ribbing you send his way, and it’s usually funny. :)

Despite it all I like you because you haven’t resorted to the “go gently caress yourself” mentality and generally play along good in good nature. I like that. :)

What I don’t like is when you pull this Eeyore stuff. It doesn’t fit you, and you should just be fun and actually acknowledge that you fit in well instead of constantly trying to be this self imposed outsider with this Rodney Dangerfield “I don’t get no respect!” shtick.

I suspect the answer to this lies in one of Chris Roberts' basic tenets: he thinks Hollywood movies are how life works. The Hollywood CEO takes no prisoners, and their effectiveness is never in their own intelligence, ability, aptitude, or leadership, but in the ability to be a no-nonsense guy who takes no guff and says things like "GET IT DONE!" while disregarding the lives of everyone beneath him. If you don't do what he says, then you don't have "what it takes" to work for him, implying that being under his leadership is a great privilege reserved for only the best of the best.

This was hinted at during his early pitch way, way back in the day, a small hint at his ego: "They said I was dead."

No, Chris. Nobody said you were dead. Nobody thought about you at all, even fans of Freelancer didn't know who you are. Nobody did outside a very small group of people who, had you asked them "Do you remember Chris Roberts?" would have said "No." then when pressed with "He made Wing Commander" would then say "uhh I guess so."

He's convinced that the only reason there are Bad Games™ is because he stepped away for a while to fail in other ventures.

I can see this aspect too, but it doesn’t explain the insane timelines he projects. You can be a “get it done!” sort of manager but also realize you need to say that for the next year to complete a milestone.

I admit though that sometimes I get frustrated with developers, and every so often I have to evoke the “just do what I’m telling you to do, I don’t want your insane creativity here to throw everything off track” because obvious reasons. There’s a timeline and I can’t have people wandering off and playing code hero over in left field.

I’m just eagerly curious why CR’s timelines are so horrendous, and if he makes impossible demands without having a clue what he’s asking.
