Oh man, Republicans have hosed themselves good and proper on the tax bill. https://twitter.com/DavidMDrucker/status/936566068293898240 Their only main driver for even doing the tax bill in the first place is because donor-class Republicans have threatened to stop all political contributions if bills don't start moving out of Congress. Now, because of what they put in the tax bill, donor-class Republicans are threatening to stop all political contributions. Oops!

I love that the specific charge that they went out to get him with leaves open rampant speculation because it's basically him saying "yeah so I lied when I said we didn't do a crime" and leaves it at that. God bless.

It's also great because the very genesis of this whole thing as far as concrete events go was Flynn talking to the Russians. They chose this one, out of probably dozens of other lies, to charge him. It's basically broadcasting to the world that everything the administration has told the public is based on a foundation of lies, without going into any further details that would undermine the investigation. And it's going to scare the gently caress out of every single low level goomba that might possibly have breathed the same air as Flynn (or Manafort, or Gates, etc.). Sure, the big fish have all that money for high priced lawyers but I bet you Joe the Schedule C GS-15 Assistant Deputy for Piss Tape Storage doesn't have the cash for a 900/hour lawyer.

GoGoGadget posted:I mean, how would a civil war work these days? I feel like most military members side with the conservative/Republican view so I don't think it'd go like you say at all, sadly. The way I expect this country to die, if not in nuclear fire, is for the federal and state governments to lose control as lines of communication break down. The governments' inability to maintain the infrastructure will lead to lower tax revenue (due to ineffective collection efforts), and parts of the map just drop out of their control. Rural areas first, then gradually the lack of central control will creep towards the cities, at which point hundreds of thousands (millions in some cases) will flood out of them. Basically, Rome 2.0. Congrats guys, we did it.

Congrats guys, we did it. That seems like more of a problem in ARE TAXES super conservative areas without any major cultural/industrial centers. California, PacNW, the Great Lakes states (MN, WI, IL, MI and maybe OH) and the Northeast would probably make out pretty well as independent nations should that scenario play out.

We're already seeing bits and pieces of this - large foreign companies passing up on building plants in the south due to an uneducated workforce, doctors having to be bribed an incredible amount to service rural areas, employers unable to find qualified workers that don't have drug problems. It can be turned around still but it's sure as gently caress not even starting until 2020 at the absolute earliest, assuming that whatever democrat gets control of the executive even gives a poo poo AND can pass it through congress.

I honestly think weed is going to make this a huge problem. I was talking to my dad about this (I'm from Texas) and I asked him how mny of my high school friends returned home from college. The answer is none. A lot don't even live in the same state. Why would you return to a state where smoking weed gets you jail time when you can live where its legal? The rural drain to cities has always been a thing but its now happening at a rate that results in negative rural growth. The kids that are 8 years old right now are going to grow up watching media of adults legaling buying weed in stores while their friends get caught selling weed and go to a juvenile center.

The supposed benefits of 'low labor cost' evaporate when you start looking at anything other than unskilled labor. Its a struggle to find qualified office workers, nevermind college educated engineers or whatever you want lots of if there isn't a college nearby pumping them out.

Why would you return to a state where smoking weed gets you jail time when you can live where its legal? You're right, but like everything already listed, those are all symptoms of a larger problem. The problem is that there's little to no incentive to stay in the middle parts of the country; and before someone comes screaming in to throw a specific example I'm talking about a large scale, generation-wide case. There's less industry coming in, more industry drying up, less economic opportunity, less educational opportunity, etc. On a generational scale all of these things lead to migration by themselves, but when they're all happening it's going to get real serious real soon.

Which car company was it that built a plant in Alabama(?) and realized they had to translate their manuals into picture books because the local cheap labor was also illiterate?
