They're desperate not to have to do that. That's not hyperbole, it is genuine desperation. CIG has knocked a fundamental foundation out of their lives by being less than perfect, and that's very frightening and painful if you're heavily invested.

What CIG do is give Backers just enough hope to ignore the failings, and thus the reality, that they have been royally screwed.

All good scammers try to double up on their gains in this way.

Can someone actually explain this

Because it went from "interesting take on futuristic tactical gear" to "mr potato doom marine" and that's quite the progression

As far as I'm concerned they are both starship troopers.

There are some unique space-marine art styles out there, but few games deviate from the Heinlein archetype.

We'rent the actual starship troopers jumping into hives alone from orbit and obliterating everything? I remember it was a major gripe I had with the film where they show them as cannon meat. They were more like mobile suits than just body armour.

Heinlein was a big fan of the concepts in the book, such as military service giving people the vote, rather than citizenship, so they kinda pushed hard on that, rather than the tech, which probably would have seen a lawsuit from Games Workshop over Space(tm)Marine(tm).

Starship Troopers are basically powered armor, clearing buildings in single bounds and lobbing small tactical nukes in small unit actions.

Yeah, in the book they jump from orbit and are far more tactically intelligent and consistent with the tech a space faring civilization would have, the movie is poo poo.

The book described them as powered armor with jet packs, but it doesn't go into detail. I think its safe to say any of the fully armored space suits you see in video games owe their roots to the novel. So IMHO getting bent out of shape over ripping off "Doom" or "Halo" is kind of moot, because those games are just ripping off older sources. Even some of the old book covers look like the classic space marine we all know.

Now if someone would come along and have games where the Space Marines had multiple arms legs, and other features that blur the line between "armor" and "vehicle", it would be really unique. Then there are artists like StTheo https://sttheo.deviantart.com/ who doesn't deviate from the formula of "Taticool space armor", but does an amazing job of making them look distinct.

All killer, no filler.

Against a Dark Background and Surface Detail aren't technically culture novels, but he was a master at extrapolating humans out into the universe. Some of his stuff makes me want to take a shower and hug a cat, emotionally speaking.

Excession is a personal favorite because it's space opera of the best kind, Use of Weapons, Look to Windward closely follows, then Player of Games, Matter, etc.

Use of Weapons I consider drat literature.

Edit: Matter has one of the best running battle sequences of a culture hit team trying to take down an ancient war machine in one of the more exotic environments that someone could come up with, and generally exposes the real paucity of ideas in games sometimes.

No real sequence, couple of cameos by characters in other books, but they largely stand alone. 'Player of Games' is a great introduction because it really underlines the Culture as something. Basically the plot revolves around the Culture making first contact with a much, much smaller, but proud empire that does everything based around a complicated board game, and they want to send an ambassador to lose amusingly and convince the said Empire that they're not a threat, rather than expose their monstrous size and have the Empire simply collapse.

It has that edge of diplomacy, and the other means diplomacy when it turns out that said Empire isn't entirely unknowing.

Use of weapons starts off as a fairly ripping yarn about special circumstances, then does the 'protagonist turns out to be flawed' thing halfway through in a series of flashbacks and narratives that sounds worse than it actually is.

It's probably the funniest drat game I've played in ages. Just the absurdity of it all and the goofy sub-stories are great. Majima peeking up or around corners spying always give me a chuckle. Kiwami was a let down but of course came out tons of years ago so to be expected.

As for things that can go gently caress themselves in the game, that one would be disco. I'm too old with my reaction times I guess for that pile of poo poo.

Grab it when you can. It is archaic in some ways (like the save system) so it will feel like playing a PS3 game in some ways. That shoots a lot of people in the foot but you get used to it.

But there is an easy 60 hours of gameplay if you fart around with side-stories and complete the main quest. Have company over? Show them the JCC or the porno shop for shock value. That kind of stuff is just the tip of the iceberg. It ranks up there for GOTY even with its faults.

UE has built in control for airborne land vehicles. Think GTA style control rotation in flight.

What you see at 50 seconds is the player using the rotation control without any limiters in angular speed or acceleration. The whole thing basically just runs in UEs bare bones stock vehicle class. With another day of work and the looks of an automotive engineer to tune the values you would be achieving PUBG levels of driving behavior no problem.
