Just came across this thread again and reread it from the beginning... thinking about picking something up in the spring next year, not necessarily just to flip but enjoy for a couple months then sell if I don't fall in love. Did have a couple questions for people that have been selling though:

How have sales been so far? Harder/easier than you expected? Any unexpected problems?

From a saleability standpoint, what seems to be more desirable for customers in the US, manual or auto? I know most AI folk would prefer a manual, just wondering if that coupled with RHD might be a turnoff for buyers?

Any other cute lil 4x4's I should consider besides the Rugged/Rocky and the Jimny? I'm leaning towards a Jimny as I've always liked Samurais and they're impossible to find in decent shape in my area (Near Philly). There are currently 3 imported Jimnys on Craigslist in the tristate area but I think their asking prices are a little on the high side (one for $6200 with no US title and photos from the Japanese auction, one for $7000 with new paint and a lift and one for $9600 with a lift). I'd probably aim to get one here for under $4k and sell eventually for like $5500.

This is a pretty complex question. In the Pacific Northwest, you are competing against probably 5-6 full time import dealerships selling a whole spread of low end sports cars up to gtrs and rx7s. We wanted to sell the cool cars but just couldn't compete with the saturation. We ended up going with kei trucks and vans, they are awesome because the mostly market themselves. Drive it to work once a week and get 5 or 6 messages about it by the end of the day. Other markets that are absolutely blasted here in the PNW is diesel land cruisers and delicas, probably 20 of them up for sale from San Fran to Seattle.
I prefer to sell manuals because less can go wrong with them. Most people buying imported cars won't be turned off by manual.

I don't know about auction house prices for the little 4x4 jeep like cars but just assume that it will cost you at least 2250-2500 just to get it into the country and plated.

tl:dr- if you are going to sell them and pay for the hobby, do your research most likely cool cars are already getting flooded into the US (GTR's aren't that uncommon where I live), if you are going to keep it just buy what makes you happy. Even really quirky cars are awesome, was not going to ever own a kei car until I started driving them. They are awesome.

edit: also japan puts 4wd and diff lock on a ton of stuff so you could look at trucks and kei vans as well. There are a ton of lift kits and offroading stuff for them stateside.

In the south east USA where I am (exactly opposite side of the country from Garbageman) we get mostly Skyline-types. Much less into quirk, there are no Delicas here nor many diesel landcruisers. I've seen a few Jimnys, a few kei trucks and a few Beats on craigslist. There are a few other importers around but none of them in my immediate area. The upside is that nation-wide there is way more demand than supply it's just letting people know you have what they are looking for. Marketing, as always.

Saleability is really anything we never got with a badge people recognize. Daihatsu is a harder sell than Honda (unless it's 4x4 and turbo diesel then it doesn't matter). Manual is more desirable unless you are trying to sell to someone like a mail carrier, someone that wants an import is normally be an enthusiast. Depending on what it is though automatic is fine. I've gotten people asking me if I'm selling the Rugger almost daily, and the answer is NO :colbert: Unless I end up getting a BJ70 Land Cruiser for myself :getin:

Cute lil' 4x4s are dominated by Jimnys and you absolutely should import one yourself to get the price down. Expect 4~ grand or so total for a nice one on average at port but options shift the price. A convertible one with A/C and a 5 speed is the priciest option, a non-A/C hardtop is the cheapest. Outside of Jimnys there are Pajeros which seem to fly under the radar for prices, available in two-door convertible setup with turbo diesels, then Land Cruisers. I can't seem to find a pattern for Land Cruiser prices though, one that I expect to go for 5k plus will sell for 3, and one I expect to sell for 3 will go to 6 grand and go unsold because it didn't clear the reserve. :iiam:

Anyone trying to sell an import here in the US without a title is a lazy rear end in a top hat.

Thanks for the info guys. There are definitely a few people around here trying to flip imports but the market doesn't seem crazy saturated, at least for what I'm into. There does seem to be a market in this area for odd/small 4x4s just based off how quick the listings seem to disappear for Samurais/brats and the like. Anything rust free commands a huge premium in these parts. I've got a few months before I can get anything anyway so I'll just keep watching auctions and local sales to get a handle on things. I would LOVE to get a Delica at some point once I get a little more experience with this stuff. I saw a guy driving one in Philly like 3 times in a month and then it seemed to disappear, was always bummed I never got to bug him about it.

Aside from the few dealers that import tons of Delicas, and skylines I'm not sure there's anyone in Vancouver selling weird kei cars or Jimnys on the side. The Japanoid website seems half broken, which makes me wonder if they're still doing much business.

I did some searching on craigslist but didn't find many listings.

https://vancouver.craigslist.ca/bnc/cto/d/1992-honda-beat-jdm/6384224959.html

Both of these are super cool, but seem a bit pricey by I dunno C$2000 or so?

I wish I had any sort of reason to own this cool mini truck with tent.

https://vancouver.craigslist.ca/van/ctd/d/daihatsu-hijet-minitruck-4wd/6397594322.html

I've seen a few Suzuki Sidekicks popup on craigslist for around C$9k that were clearly fitted out by hunters. Maybe there's a local market here for that.

I don't think people are cross shopping Beats or Miatas, not the ones paying a premium for a Beat. You are buying a Beat because you want the weird tiny Honda sports car, not because it's practical in any sense.

Don't forget just how unique these things are in the USA, most people haven't been to Japan, most people don't even know what they are. Tiny, sports car, Honda badge. That's pretty potent to the right person.

The 25 year bump is real, my advice if you are seeking one of these sought after cars, buy a mid year 1993 (production June July August) the prices will be 2-3k less and you will only pay maybe 500-600$ in Port fees. Also jcd is really cool about getting things like car covers and having them put on while it's sitting at Port.

Yeah I wondered about that, the writer took details they got from elsewhere and put them in the description, ones that I didn't put in the information they asked for and that I gave them. Was actually a nice time setting it all up.
I do have an almost hour long video where o walk around the thing and take it for a long drive where that information was, it is possible the writer watched that and pulled it from there. Or did their own research.

Man it certainly doesn't feel that slow.
I spent 3 long and hard days replacing all 4 leaf springs and absorbers on the thing and man was it a pain in the rear end. I hurt all over and it wasn't even rusty! Only had two bolts seized in the spring shackles and all four absorbers were shot and in pain.
Now it's smooth and rides quite a bit higher, almost a 2 inch lift in the front and about an inch in the back, the front is now even height-wise to the rear. Had to add an inch in the anti-roll bar supports that mount just behind the bumper to clear the third spring that now resides in the front on either wheel. It still leans to the right as well, looking around it sounds like it's the panhard rod. Going to take a look at that tomorrow. There is zero evidence of chassis tweaking or body tweaking as everything measures up, is squared away etc etc.

Not as much to make it worth it if I dealt only in 1983 Hijets. The radiator repair that it needed after I got it here threw a wrench in that, and it being my first car bought at auction I've learned a lot since then. So to answer your question (sorta), not enough. :)
