A vacancy tax on all residential units would be such a tremendous good for the city, I don't know why the idea never gains any traction . (I know why it never gains any traction.)

i don't think that it's up to the city to decide that kind of tax. i sure love NYC having less control over its affairs than Scranton

also geez, guys, can't we just legalize it first before getting into "why not this that and the other thing instead?" this will be a hard enough battle as it is with a governor that holds on to the completely bullshit notion of weed being a gateway drug. all the more money for New Jersey to make

Big, if true: After bumpy start, Democrats agree to Senate unity

quote:

ALBANY — Are the state Senate's warring Democrats headed back to the altar?

The potential repair of the longstanding rift between the chamber's mainline Democratic Conference and the eight-member Independent Democratic Conference seemed closer to realization Tuesday after almost seven years apart.

Despite — and you probably saw this coming — a few hurdles.

On Tuesday evening, a day after the state Democratic party issued a set of ultimatums designed to bring the two conferences back into alignment, IDC leader Jeff Klein appeared to agree to the reunification terms. In a statement, Klein said the party's "assurance that our progressive legislative agenda will be advanced is a victory for the people of New York."

Because Andrea Stewart-Cousins, leader of the mainline Democrats, had already agreed to the terms of the state party blueprint when it was rolled out Monday evening, Klein's statement seemed to clear the way for a shift in power in the last remaining bastion of Republican power in state government.

i gotta think that felder's gonna try and hold out for more power in a unified caucus because he's a piece of poo poo like that

at the very least, "dealmaking centrist" has been proven to go over like a lead balloon among voters and the dem frontrunners for 2020 are doing a much better job of jockeying to the left than cuomo, who sees no need for such frivolities. pretty lol to see his staffer snap back at de blasio for putting presidential ambitions at the forefront when her boss was in LA and SF for the same thing

I can't wait to leave the presidential section blank in 2020 when it's Kamala Harris or some other garbage centrist in leftist clothing like Obama.

harris at least supports medicare for all, while cuomo has admitted through twitter likes that he does not

call me a lovely lefty, but gillibrand is making me take notice through outspoken support for medicare for all, $15 minimum wage, legal weed, and paid family leave. she is certainly doing better than cuomo and de blasio, who is too much of a doofus to run anything resembling an effective campaign. never mind that his first term campaign was proto-sanders

but we'll cross this bridge when we get there, hopefully cuomo gets shoved out of the way. not sure if miner is going to run against him or Katko

in different news, i saw the new trains and i'm glad that the A and C lines are finally gonna be able to retire their old-rear end trains. i also heard they're thinking of scaling back 24 hour service. while that probably is a source of problems in terms of repairs, i don't trust cuomo to actually get it done

Jesus Christ, John, let the embers cool a bit!

quote:

COHOES - The long road to recovery continues in Cohoes. Many of the businesses affected by last week's fire have re-opened.

More than 30 buildings were damaged when high winds fueled flames that jumped from property to property on Remsen Street.

Democratic Assemblyman John McDonald tells NewsChannel 13 there could be a silver lining to all of this.

"We have a unique opportunity here. We have pretty much almost a full block of downtown Cohoes that's gone. We have a new economy in this whole Amazon world, where bricks and mortar retail has been struggling. How can we put our heads together to see if we can find a way to help the city jumpstart revitalization on Remsen Street in this area and really take what was a tragedy and make it into something meaningful and long-lasting," asked McDonald.

More than two-dozen people are still being helped by the Red Cross following the fire.

Financial donations are being accepted at Key Bank, Pioneer Bank and Cap Com Federal Credit Union.

Individuals convicted of engaging in “revenge porn” and sexual extortion will be required to register as sex offenders under a plan Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo proposed Thursday.

Cuomo said he wants stronger penalties against those who disseminate or threaten to disclose sexual images or videos of someone without their consent, which is known as revenge porn. The plan also targets sextortion, which typically involves threats to disseminate private information about someone unless they provide money or sexual favors or images.

“The dangerous proliferation of sextortion and revenge crimes disproportionately targets young women and girls and causes harm and embarrassment that can follow victims their entire lives,’’ Cuomo said Thursday.
