Welcome to Let's Play, where we play videogames so you don't have to!

Slowbeef, patron saint of Let's Play posted:

"Let's Plays" are video game playthroughs documented or recorded for the internet, usually with commentary. Here you will find a wide variety of commentators and artists bringing their own unique styles and approaches to the the medium of playing a video game.

Your moderation team will be Danaru, Sally née Dash Rendar née Blind Sally, and myself, along with IK nine-gear crow. We're here to help, so feel free to contact us with queries and subforum-related matters.

Here is everything you need to know to not get banned.

Rules for posting in LP:
  1. LP Threads only, please!

Don't post a thread that's not an LP Thread. General discussion should go in the Sandcastle, and we have a Recommendation Thread for plugging and discussing threads you love.

Rarely, we permit threads for discussion of specific issues that won't fit in the Sandcastle. If you have an idea for such a thread, please ask a mod for approval.

  2. Keep the General SA Forum Rules in mind!

If you take away only one thing from them, make it this thing:

    Lowtax posted:

Before replying, please ask yourself the following question: "Does my reply offer any significant advice or help contribute to the conversation in any fashion?"

If you can answer "yes" to this, then please reply. If you cannot, then refrain from replying.
  3. Play nice, and don't be a dick!

It generally takes a lot of effort to run an LP thread. Please be respectful of that when participating! Criticism isn't verboten; just don't make it personal, don't use slurs, and don't be inflammatory. Try not to be a creep either. We don't think we're asking a lot here.

If you really don't like a thread, vote 1 and post elsewhere.

If you come across someone disregarding this directive...

  4. Report shitheads!

This cannot be stressed enough. LP threads aren't trivial to follow, and no amount of mods can follow them all. We probably won't see bad posts if they're not reported! So use that report button if you've got it (requires Platinum), or contact a mod some other way if you don't.

  5. Respect spoiler rules!

If the LPer requests spoilers be tagged, then tag your spoilers! If the LPer requests spoilers not be posted at all, don't post spoilers at all! The mod team will typically defer to the LPer's judgement when dealing with spoiler complaints.

Don't use spoiler tags for things that aren't spoilers.

    • When reporting posts for spoilers, please include details! We haven't played everything. It's not always obvious, so assume we don't know! There's enough space in the report form now to tell us exactly what part of the offending post is a spoiler, so we can better judge what to do about it. Don't worry about spoiling us, by the way, we know what we signed up for.

Rules for posting LPs:
  1. Above all else, show us you give a drat!

The internet-wide LP landscape has changed, a lot, since this subforum got started, but we still presume to have standards.

Don't just post a link to your channel and be done with it. Threads that are barebones, transparently farming for reputation or exposure, or otherwise just plain insincere are liable to be gassed. There's no hard and fast rules on how to run a thread, but one way or another, if you put in effort (or don't), it will show in the end.

  2. No YouTube dumps or reposts!

The point of an LP thread is, if not participation, at least discussion. It's not against the rules to have a backlog or even to record an entire playthrough in advance - just don't post it all at once.

Also, don't re-post an LP you've already started elsewhere if it's a significant way through already. Create your LP for the thread, not the other way around.

  3. Rules regarding soliciting donations:

SA broadly prohibits linking personal fundraisers. However, in threads in which posters share their work, we consider it acceptable to let it be known that you take donations.

You are permitted to link your Patreon/Ko-Fi/PayPal/etc once, with a short blurb, in the OP of your LP thread. Don't post it more than once, and don't labour the point after the fact.

We are trusting you not to cross the line into shilling. We reserve the right to remove your links and otherwise exercise the typical mod discretion if, in our judgement, you are pushing that boundary.

There are no restrictions on streaming for charity (eg, Extra Life), so long as your donation links are for the charity in question and not you personally.

  4. Rules regarding adult content:

Some games are porn. This is not the place for these games. You know these games when you see them.

Some games are steeped in themes and depictions of sex and sexuality, yet manage to not just be porn. You will have to use your best judgement to determine whether or not it is a good idea to exhibit these games. If in any doubt at all, ask the mods for a judgement before posting.

Some games happen to get a little risqué from time to time. We've got nothing against this, but if a given pic is particularly NSFW, you should probably link it instead of posting it inline. If it's going to happen a lot, consider just putting an NSFW warning in your thread title. People appreciate content warnings.

Guidelines and Resources for LPers:

So you want to make an LP, huh? Fantastic! Here are some pointers:

  • The Sandcastle is for hints, advice and quality checks, as well as chat. It's not a rule, but we advise new LPers to run prospective LPs past the Sandcastle before starting threads; you're bound to get some helpful feedback, even if it's just people telling you to :justpost:.

  • The Tech Support Fort can tell you everything you'd ever want to know and more about recording, encoding, audio, editing, hardware and software tools you'll find indispensable.

  • When you start a thread, post a link in The Newer New LP Thread! LP is quite an active subforum and new threads can easily go unnoticed for a while, so use this thread to help people get in on the ground floor.

  • To keep on top of new LPs as they arrive, either follow the aforementioned Newer New LP Thread or use this RSS feed, or even this handy If-This-Then-That recipe.

  • If you're itchin' to LP something but aren't quite sure exactly what, there are some places you may want to check out; The LP Reccommendation and Request Thread will tell you whats hot and what's in demand, and the LP Archive and LP Master List will show you what's come before. Don't forget; there is no rule against multiple, concurrent, or even similar, LPs of the same game, so don't feel obliged to be original and innovative!

  • If you want to buddy up, you can find co-commentators in the Co-commentation Station. And if you just want to stream, we've got a Stream Thread that wants to hear from you.

  • Your friendly neighbourhood moderators are here to help. PM us or shout in the Sandcastle if you need something, have a question, or just want to run something by us.

  • And lastly, if you do end up posting something, :siren::siren:beware the Archive Lock:siren::siren:. Threads in LP that have not had a new post in two months will fall into Archive Lock status. If a thread is archive locked it can only be reopened again by arcane sysadmin magic. Keep this in mind if you're going to be putting an LP on an extended hiatus. Please contact either one of us mods or Jeffery of YOSPOS for help in unlocking a thread.

If you want to continue an LP that has been locked by the forums, please start a new thread for it instead.

We're trialing a rule change that allows LPers to plug their donation pages, once, briefly, in the OPs of threads. If it goes well and is broadly used responsibly, it will be added to the rules. Read about it in the Sandcastle.

This isn't really a new rule but consider it some noteworthy guidance.

We're going through some switch-ups of moderation. I am going to step down in the near future. nine-gear crow has retired from IK. Further, we have a new batch of IKs to try on the grey stars in SALP. If you need anything in SALP and Fedule or Danaru aren't available, you can also ping tithin, Leal, or PurpleXVI.

Rules regarding adult content:

To add to this, this also extends to games that aren't technically porn because there is no sex shown or actual nudity. If its a game where the reward is seeing a character depicted lewdly, don't LP it. A CG of a character leaning over the viewer with her shirt open and lowered with her breasts hanging out, but her hair covers part of them, isn't full on nudity but it still shouldn't be posted here.

If the nudity is some kind of side detail then its whatever, but when its front and center as a core part of the game then it shouldn't be LP'd. The Witcher has sex scenes and detailed nudity but the game has way more going on in it. Senran Kagura doesn't have sex or detailed nudity but its a game all about either damaging characters until their nude body is shown or transformation scenes where they're depicted nude, and that isn't acceptable here.

If you believe that a game could stand on its own without the adult scenes, by either glossing over or cutting it all together, just be sure that the stuff you're omitting isn't something skeevy cause someone will most definitely know what you're cutting out and will bring it up. Even if you don't show it, we don't want stuff like that LP'd here. Again, if someone were to somehow edit an LP to hide the clothes removal from a Senran Kagura LP, someone saying "Hey their clothes rip off, also they're 15" is going to get obliterated.
