It seems like the returns given the rarity of rare candies vs it not being 90+% makes it worth it

if you have a decent Raikou or Zapdos, they are probably the two best electric attackers in the game. Really useful vs Suicune and the legendary birds

Because people keep asking about it, might as well repost this from the old thread:

List of cross-generation evolutions that have anything to do with what we can collect right now:

Gen 3
  • Azurill (baby) → Marill
  • Wynaut (baby) → Wobbuffet

Gen 4
  • Magneton → Magnezone
  • Lickitung → Lickilicky
  • Rhydon → Rhyperior
  • Happiny (baby) → Chansey
  • Tangela → Tangrowth
  • Mime Jr. (baby) → Mr. Mime
  • Electabuzz → Electivire
  • Magmar → Magmortar
  • Eevee → Leafeon
  • Eevee → Glaceon
  • Porygon2 → Porygon-Z
  • Munchlax (baby) → Snorlax

  • Yanma → Yanmega
  • Murkrow → Honchkrow

  • Dusclops → Dusknoir
  • Chingling (baby) → Chimecho

Gen 5
    Nothing

Gen 6
  • Eevee → Sylveon

Gen 7
  • Pikachu → Alolan Raichu
  • Exeggcute → Alolan Exeggutor
  • Cubone → Alolan Marowak

In other words, there's nothing you previously collected that you need to worry about for gen 3 because it's just two baby forms. Gen 4 is the one with everything.

Does anyone notice the weather bringing out pokemon that weren't already common to their biome? For me it seems to only bring out stuff that was already spawning in my area.

I wonder if that's by design or just bad luck on my part, because it would suck if it's still biome restricted.

I had most of the weekend to myself, and spent it wandering around hunting the new mons. A few observations...

Being able to catch weather-boosted Pokemon over level 30 with increased IVs is nuts, and borderline broken (not that I'm complaining). Assembling a decent raid team used to take actual effort. Now, it can easily be done in a few days, provided you have sufficient candy stockpiled. I caught a 97% IV Geodude at level 35. I had enough Geodude candy saved up, so a quick couple evolutions, a charge TM, and a little stardust, and I had an instant, top-tier raid attacker ready to go.

While I think this perhaps makes things too easy, I do like that it puts emphasis back on hunting and exploring, while at the same time drastically reducing the importance of stardust and simultaneously making candy good for something other than powering up raid catches.

For me personally, I think I'm pretty much done spending stardust on anything that's not a legendary -- you can basically catch whatever you need now, IVs be damned. Of course, with everyone having access to this, maybe IVs become even more important for hitting that top breakpoint and squeezing out that last bit of damage? Who knows.

At any rate, I love the new update -- it looks great, plays great, and adds a fresh new dimension to the game.

Apropos of nothing, has anyone seen a Mudkip? I've caught a Torchic and a Treecko, but I haven't even seen a Mudkip, and I live in a pretty water-centric biome. I've spotted multiple Squirtles and Tototdiles, but strangely, zero Mudkips.

Totodile is Porygon-level rare here, we live nowhere near water, and somehow I've seen four Mudkips since the update

We've seen before that biomes and events can spawn pokemon based on their final evolution type rather than their current type (for example, Slugma showing up during the Rock event even though it doesn't get Rock-type until it evolves to Magcargo). Mudkip isn't Water/Ground but its final evo is - do you live in an area with a lot of Ground-types?

Dang, I didn't think of that. Phanpy, Gligar, and Rhyhorn are all common enough and Woopers spawn like Pidgeys.

I suppose it may be useful to have an attacker with double Dragon moves that is not weak to Dragon moves itself in case there are ever raids on Dragon types. But you can also just throw more Dragonites at it.

My personal anecdote for California is that the most common gen 3 spawns are Roselia and Seedot. Everything else is a modest sprinkling. Haven't seen Mudkip out of the starters, and most people's reports are that Minun must be somewhere else in the world because we only see Plusle. Surprisingly, I got a pass. This is my 5th, and assuming I catch it, my 4th Mewtwo. The second one, I never had a chance, RNG wasn't letting it happen.

Anyway, I feel less than thrilled. Other people need one Mewtwo. Or two. Etc. And the person I've been playing with the most didn't get one, despite also soloing a Cloyster there on Sunday, in addition to raiding there more frequently than I do. His baby Valor account got a pass though, for whatever reason.

I hope they develop the EX pass system more. This one is a 35 minute drive, starts at 5:30 on a Friday. I'll go, but I'm lucky, I work for myself and have already decided I'm gonna go early and hit stops in the park to avoid traffic. Not everyone has that choice, or can afford to blow half a tank of gas on Mewtwo.

It would be nice if we could select a radius around our home zip code and time frames for EX passes. Obviously, you could just select "all, any time, any where" so as not to screw anyone. out of a pass.

I'm starting to think they didn't actually change anything with EX raids being based on badge progress and it's still just random but with previous EX recipients getting priority.

This is me as well, though that may be in part due to the clear weather boosting grass spawns the past couple days.

Comment on a TSR post:

quote:

I'm a professional statistician, and while I applaud your effort, you can't draw any conclusions from this data. There are two fundamental problems here:

1) Most importantly, this is based on voluntary response data on TSR, and hence is not a random sample from the full population of POGO players. I think it's safe to assume that TSR readers are much more likely to have a gold badge than an average player. There's also possible selection bias in that people who have gold badges and didn't get picked are possibly more likely to report their result because they are annoyed and want their voice heard.
2) A second major issue is that previous TSR research shows that players who have never received an EX invite are much more likely to receive one. (In fact, this seems to be the most important variable by far.) Players who have never received an EX invite are less likely to have gold badges, which may create the impression that a gold badge works against you. (This is something called "Simpson's paradox" if you want to google it.)

The best way to do this analysis would be to briefly survey players who do tier 4/5 raids at EX gyms before the passes are distributed. This would be difficult to do because obviously most potential EX gyms do not get picked for an EX raid in a given week. But that's the only way to get representative data. Even then the data wouldn't be perfectly representative, because there is no realistic way to include solo players who do tier 1/2 raids at the gym. But it's probably the best we can do. If the TSR staff want to try to organize this type of study, I would be happy to volunteer to collect some data in my city.

https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/comments/7ixkcy/update_to_ex_raid_for_18th_december_survey/

The basic gist being that anecdotal evidence doesn't amount to much, but also it's really hard to actually collect real data on EX raid invites.
