That post was magnificent, Rooster. I'm a fan of goat, jerk, and crabcake-style patties, so that sounded pretty good, if nowhere near the original idea!

Maybe it's regional, but 7-11 has been offering Jamaican beef patties in their recently expanded "grill" section. Aaaand now I really miss living up the street from a Caribbean grocer, they had all kinds of Jamaican patties in their freezer section. Curry chicken patties were my jam.

Also, I'm still down with making "handcheese with music" --- probably Wednesday, that's my day off.

Sounds like an Eastern European dish to me. Boiled cabbage and sausage with caraway seeds and a side of rye bread.

I'm pretty sure a "Wroughtirony" would be an elaborate wedding cake created by an extremely homophobic baker- a truly exquisite cake and the showpiece of the baker's career. An ad campaign featuring the cake (and happy couple) would be created at great expense and business would be booming until somebody pointed out that the "groom" in the picture was female. A media kerfuffle ensues, celebrities take sides, the couple is gifted a lavish honeymoon, the Human Rights Council rakes in donations, and the bakery goes out of business.

That looks terrible, but tasty! Anyone want to chime in with a critique of what German Sausage Salad should have been?

I'm guessing it's wurstsalat that was being attempted, in which case a recipe for the real thing is here. It's basically julienne sausage, pickles, onions, and optionally cheese seasoned with vinegar.

Well, it was just coleslaw and sausages, so it was fine. Other than putting the sausages in the coleslaw instead of just serving them alongside it it was just a normal meal I'd happily eat any time, and that one small change didn't really make a significant difference.

The weirdest/most adventurous thing about it was that I baked the potatoes in a micro-convection oven for the first time (since I just got one) and they turned out pretty well. I just guessed the cooking time and temperature (30 mins at 200°) and I think I got it pretty much spot on.

This is amazing, I was afraid sausage salad was the boringest of my suggestions, but I'm glad it inspired you :)

Doom Rooster posted:

I haven't eaten it in years, but my aunt's partner used to make some really great sausage salad.

First, you need this kind of sausage:

According to wikipedia, it's called bologna in English. Normally you'd cut slices off and eat them on bread, but you can also make salad with it.

The other ingredients are mostly onions and pickles, but you can get creative and put tomatoes, peppers, radishes, carrots, cheese, or basically anything you'd find in a salad. I don't remember ever seeing anything leafy or starchy in it, so I'm afraid cabbage is an innovation. We do love cabbage though, who doesn't love cabbage?
Sausage salad is seasoned with some sort of vinaigrette, and you eat it with bread, or just plain like a normal salad before the main course.

Wikipedia has a collection of pictures of sausage salad, this one sort of represents the ideal:

And here's a Swiss version with some additional ingredients:

And here's one in its natural habitat, the beer garden:

In a beer garden you're allowed to bring your own food as long as you buy the beer, but various salads and cheeses are exactly what is sold there.

I'll just chime in that wurstsalat varies from region to region in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Southern bayrischer wurstsalat might (emphasis on might, it varies) be served without the spirzalized sausage (just thin medallions), no cheese, and lots of vinegar based dressing.

This image is similar to what I had in Munich:
