It seems I always end up in the sort of job where the motto is "get things done".
I got on a famous unicorn startup and they wanted to redo a tech revamp on the frontend to react&redux and I'm like, yes, let's do this.. keyword here is wanted; currently I'm bogged down fixing bugs and putting new features on the legacy code while the tech debt cleanup keeps being pushed ahead, now it's 2018 Q1, but I bet it's going to be postponed again.

We have a dozen spare developers? Great! That means we can implement all these features that we need for the deal I just signed that we need to start delivering on January 1st.

Face it folks: code debt only gets addressed if it can be convincingly prioritized above feature work.

One of my previous places spent 2+ years building up tech debt to ship in a rocky political situation and then dedicated a full year for the whole team to paying it down.

Hobocamp.
I have never seen a "refactor" ticket get successfully finished, they always get pushed further & further away until presumably the heat death of the universe.

What I have seen succeed has been adding refactor line items into existing tickets, for example, in the Corn Dog feature, you must* refactor the Hot Dog model before Corn Dogs can be implemented.

That said, I think it's valuable to try to take a campsite approach to any new work and clean up any files you touch. Some argue that this makes code review difficult, but that's a lesser evil compared with "never refactoring".

Just seems the more work I do the more cornered I get into trying to keep an house of cards to not fall down, maybe if I stop doing my job things will change. I know I'm just venting, but eventually I've grown suspicious of most job offers because rarely I've been in a place where the initial hiring was what I ended up doing. And gently caress that "pay your dues" noise.

I worry more about an explosion of crypto currencies, as everyone chases the "get in on the ground floor" angle. This will prompt the creation of some sort of crypto-exchange, which, if efficient enough, will cause the value of all crypto-currencies to wear-level down to each other, as they will all become functionally equivalent.

I've discovered that since I became a consultant, I have a knack for managing to consistently position myself in a "Process Governance and DevOps" role in addition to the duties I was brought in for and implement review procedures to curtail debt where I can. This can also net me enough influence to tell my PM when debt needs to be prioritized and keep it prioritized, especially if I have a recent disaster to cite with "this could have been prevented"-ism.

Sadly, this comes at the price of spending the first month of the project constantly saying "Jesus Christ stop emailing code, this world has Git! Your company even hosts a Git instance!" And the second month of the project teaching the team how to use Git.

Blockchain is still heavily associated with digital currencies, and that's the thing with all the baggage. The fans all seem to be weighted down by fedoras: libertarians, Silicon Valley snake-oil salesmen, and Magic the goddamn Gathering.

Blockchain as a standalone tech will probably eventually gain credibility, but for now it's hampered by its complexity and perceived lack of a "killer app" outside of digital currencies.

Today’s update is boring. My new tech lead said even though he’s still new he’s very pleased that I’m on the team and has told Mr. Manager that many times. He also disclosed that Mr. Manager has asked him many times about me and he claims he told him he was very happy with me. I shared some of the things that happened yesterday and he was very taken aback. Then I asked him what I could improve on and we really didn’t have much beyond tips for dealing with Anus. He also said he’s had his PRs picked apart by Shithead and that Clownshoes lacks managerial skills and also lots of other poo poo, not that it really matters. He was pretty upset and asked me to at least see phase 1 through, I said “yeah sure I’m not gonna leave!!!!” because for all I know he could be a spy.

HR has a few potential options on other teams and already figured out why I’m asking. It’s going to be escalated to the top of HR.

I'm looking for a new role. No interesting story about it, alas - project ran out of money. If anyone has any leads, I'd appreciate a PM.

I have almost 4 years of full-stack experience in Rails, Node and Angular and a cert in project management. My background's primarily been as a consultant and I don't really like that world too much, so I'm looking to get a taste of working at a product-based company.

I'm currently based in Portland, but I'm open to relocating or remote work.

Where do you get your tech news?

I've been following ArsTechnica for several years, but this past year their reporting hasn't been as good as I remember it and their comments area has a much higher noise-to-signal ratio than it used to.

Hacker News has had some interesting stories over the years, but it doesn't really provide a good overview.

A couple of my coworkers like The Verge. What are goon opinions of it?
