Tried Supersampling 2.0 on low impact apps (Virtual Desktop and Oculus Home) with a GTX 970 and I had about 90% free overhead still; yet, I had a couple of weird crashes on Virtual Desktop (both Oculus and external monitor went dark, external monitor showing "No Signal") that required a restart to fix.

With SS set to 2.0 I could see some visual improvements, but nothing as major as I expected (IE: my external monitor is still vastly more sharp and clear); I assume that's expected?

I'm a bit afraid of visual glitches, but I'll try SS 1.3 on RoboRecall and see if I can spot any difference.

You can go to the lobby and mess with SS without a worry. The major improvements will be visible up close and in the far distance when you actually can tell a person from a bush (something like stand out).

I wasn’t blown away or sold on SS until I started playing more shooting games with 100+ meter shots.

Ever since I installed FO4 Steam VR thinks it needs to blink as if it's changing resolution on my desktop every time it starts and stops. Any way to keep that from happening? Didn't do it before today.

One of my 2 monitors has done that for months now, I don't know what started it.

Did you opt in to the FO4 beta? Supposed to fix some desktop resolution stuff

Can someone explain how desktop resolution affects your headset resolution? I have read that before but don’t get it. Since most people are probably using a 1080p monitor will that on your desktop give you good results on a Rift?

It shouldn't but if you're bad at making games like Bethesda and most junior indie devs it might.

One thing to keep in mind is most VR games so far (even ports) are using engines like Unity that already have baked in VR support. Doom and Fallout aren't, which is one reason they're much more likely to have weird and unexpected issues.

Also, well, Bethesda and bugs.

I wonder if Croteam would have been willing/able to contract themselves out to Bethesda for VR Ports. The Serious Sam VR ports were really well done.

Dead Effect 2 VR is a better port than any of the Bethesda games so far and thats pathetic. Almost any other VR dev team would have put out a better port to be honest.

Like 100% I felt better shooting, walking, exploring in that game than any time I was in Fallout 4 so far. And this is beyond the awful control poo poo. Just in general, the feeling of the game itself.

This had nothing to do with Bethesda Game Studios (who worked on FO and TES). This is outsourced to some jokers in Dallas who are supposed to be 'vr specialists'. I think they made a couple crappy gear VR games and they also did Doom VFR and the snap map part of Doom 4.

So basically there are indie devs with more VR experience and then these devs were given 3 VR ports to do at the same time. Not too surprising they turned out terrible with seemingly all the real effort behind Skyrim.

I completely disagree. DE2 was bad enough for me to request a refund. That's the first time I've ever done that.

At least in DE, Where I aim is where I shoot.

It also flickers less graphically

and pushing buttons in the world happens instead of having to repeat push a button over and over.

I'm not saying DE2 is a good game. But for 1/3rd the cost, its a better port. And if you were a DE2 owner, VR was like 5 bucks or something. Its just better value in general.

The only reason Fallout 4 VR isnt getting a refund from me is I bought a code from a goon. Or my rear end would be refunding this 60$ game until they get some things sorted or the community fixes yet another broken game by bethesda

fallout vr is very good fun for me, I dunno. The combat is made better in VR because it's easier and fun to peek corners solid snake style and get behind cover in roomscale. (edit: plus being able to blindfire now is awesome)

Even feels a bit more classic bethesda rpg since you never go third person in conversations.

I'm just pissed because it was held up as like the first true, full triple-A VR title. The fact that they completely outsourced and half-assed it sucks, because other AAA devs that were considering taking a chance will point to this as reason not to.

I've been hearing that a lot but it seems unlikely. SkyrimVR seems to be doing pretty well. It also seems like this holiday season has seen a lot more VR headsets sold (presumably PSVR the most but also plenty of PC sets on sale).

The VR genie is out of the bottle and no botched release it gonna put it back in.

If anything FO4/Doom shows how even a half assed VR refit can sell old games again. Creating AAA assets is hideously expensive and this allows you to give them another go with a hearted effort from a mobile dev. If Ubisoft isn't considering VR dlc for the new Far Cry they are crazy. Take all those many millions of dollars of fancy assets and contract someone to add VR controls and they can get another $25-50 out of people and be thanked for it.

After a rocky start yesterday I am loving loving FO4VR. The fixed graphics are much better, and it is immersive as all hell to me. I've started building up Sanctuary and zipping around and placing things is actually really fun in VR. My only complaint is that I'm not used to actually standing for hours on end :P

There's a couple of possibilities for that depending on how you define "full AAA title". Elite Dangerous has supported VR since the beginning but it's a niche space grinding pseudo-MMO, same with EVE Valkyrie. Minecraft got VR support a while ago and has sold more than every other game in this post put together but it's not really what people tend to mean by "AAA". There have been a couple of big-name PS4 games that supported VR in restricted modes like Rise of the Tomb Raider and SW Battlefront.

IMO the first game that can legitimately claim to be a real AAA title developed and released with full VR support in mind is Resident Evil 7 which came out in January.

I think that's just a single level of the game where you explore Lara Croft's mansion.

$199 Mixed Reality Headsets. These aren't the best of the bunch but they're better than the PSVR and 200 bucks is insane for what you're getting.

What’s bad about them? I’m still new to this at less than a month with my Oculus so I don’t even know what they mean by mixed reality. I was thinking it might be having a camera in the headset to combine car with your surroundings (like augmented reality...these different realities are confusing) but the Vive has that and people refer to it as virtual reality.

"Mixed reality" is just what Microsoft calls their headsets, no matter if they're VR or AR. These are VR HMDs.

It's supposed to mean what you think, but Microsoft decided to just go and do straight up false advertising. It has two outward facing cameras for tracking, but no camera passthrough at all, like the Vive has.

In any event, the cheap optics of my Dell headset made everything past the middle third into a blurry mess, support is non-existent, none of the non-Samsung MR headsets even have a microphone for voice chat built in, or physical IPD adjustment. Controllers can't track when you're not looking at them which screws with a lot of Steam VR games.

You can find non-Samsung Microsoft MR headsets all over eBay for less than $200 because there's a lot of buyer's remorse.

I don't want to upset people who already invested in them but I also don't think it's right for people to come in to the thread trying to talk others into buying them for $200 or otherwise. The Rift is much more than $150 of value over those, between the great optics, better controllers and build quality, IPD, speakers and Mic, exclusives etc.

Interesting. I wonder why they are trying to brand them as something other than what they are - they won’t get sustained sales with buzzwords if customers aren’t happy and word of mouth is bad.

Also I read that the Rift is down to $350 bucks again, on amazon. I don’t see it for that price there but other people did for some reason so if someone is looking for one keep an eye out.

homeless snail
Mar 14, 2007

The reason is that Microsoft isn't really interested in HMDs that exclusively do VR but pay lip service to it in the interest of Windows Holographic which works across the entire mixed reality spectrum. So they'll sell you a VR headset but remind you that its just part of a larger ecosystem of products they'd like to sell you one day. Like I think any software you'd write for these cheapo VR HMDs could conceivably run in a Hololens, same API.

If I'm being generous to them, the reason sort of makes sense in a way. Microsoft is aiming to build the functionality into windows itself to natively have both VR and AR support, hence "mixed" reality, since it covers the spectrum of *R devices.

Its also probably likely they wanted a way to differentiate themselves as you're faaaar from the first person i've seen online think they're something more than a VR headset.
