I always thought the Willy Wonka movie with Johnny Depp was really messed up because of the way the Oompa-Loompahs were portrayed. Between that and this, I’m starting to think that the reason the Depp movie was worse is because it was more faithful to the book.

johnny depp is pretty good at playing johnny depp, but the only good movies he's in are good in spite of him, not because of him. sad, but true.

Roald Dahl has publicly said he prefers the Depp movie over the Wilder movie iirc, because yes, it is. Death of the author.

Roald Dahl died long before you the Tim Burton version and I assume you knew that, but my biggest problem with the Tim Burton version of the film was that he was adding a dark subtext to the work that he didn't seem to realize was already there. I know I'm a huge dork for fanboying over Dahl, but he never pulled any punches. He wrote books kids would want to read rather than books that were considered kid friendly which is why I think his books hold up so well.

I could be wrong because I haven’t seen anything about it from Albarn, but Gorillaz’ lead singer being named “2-D” could be a reference to Massive Attack frontman 3D (and of course he is a 2-dimensional cartoon).

The only dirty joke I can even think of in Willy Wonka is the whole Snozzberry thing In one of his non kids books he wrote beforehand, Dahl uses the term to mean the head of a dick, so I'm going to be upset if Syscall was meaning that and just phrased it weird.

Eh it's really a pretty awful movie even though I did appreciate the faithfulness to the book. Nothing Burton has done since like 2000 has been worth watching.

Charlie is the camera — Wonka is the plot-driver. FWIW, I prefer Wilder’s indifferent psychopath to Depp’s QUIRKY WACKO. Edit: ha, yeah having Deep Roy (?) play every single Oompa Loopa was hosed up and great. For some reason it makes the dance numbers much more interesting. The Burton version has a number of individual strong elements but fails as a whole film. I blame Depp’s performance, and I actually like Depp as an actor.
