Vale is insanely good. Too bad maxing out her affinity tree requires doing her weaving 50 times. Easier than Pyra's cooking, at least. It's not important for her combat stats but I want those weapon xp items.

Influences the Core's potential elements towards two specific ones depending on the Booster used (you can tell by the rings around the Core).

So I decided to play through xbc 1 before I get to this game, and I finally figured out all the systems. So I'm finally having fun. However, I've only gotten to Eryth Sea over 20 hours, and there seems to be no end in sight. How much longer can I expect the game to last if I'm disregarding tedious-seeming sidequests?

Oh you sweet innocent soul :allears:.

An average playthrough clocks around 70 hours. That's with minimal/general gather-as-you-go sidequesting. And yes, a lot of XC1's sidequests are tedious. Just grab a bunch of gathering ones and forget about them. If you gather enough for them to auto-complete, great. If not,.

Why does everyone think I'm going to get in trouble?

I say don't even bother with quests that don't award experience, they don't build up town affinity or anything so they're really there if you just need some quick cash I guess? The sidequests that do award experience are much more worth your time and if they're the kind where you just need to gather x collectables, there's more likely than not an NPC who will trade you those collectables and it makes running those sidequests so much faster.

You'll eventually reach a point where salvaging gives you an insanely high return, enough to buy a lot of cylinders each time. Don't sweat it.

I'm at the point in the story where I'm heading to Zeke's home city. Is that sort of a "point of no return" where I'm going to start losing access to stuff until I finish doing plot for a while or am I still good for a little while? I'm sorta burnt out on sidequest stuff and want to start continuing the story again but I also don't want to be in a point where I have to mainline the story because I don't have my stuff.

You are still good until close to the end of chapter eight. The last zone that you can get all the way through without triggering any real “point of no return” (and it's a relatively minor one in this game) is called the Land of Morytha.

However, if you’re concerned that your party will get disrupted or something: it will.

(Elaboration on the timing of this.) The point you’re at will cause you to lose a party member pretty soon. You’ll get the party member back for a little bit, then lose them again at the end of the chapter until you complete the next one, which is quite long. So yes, you will get put through some plot stuff that changes your party composition for a while.

Yeah, that's my point. If you get 3 generic damage modifiers on a common blade it will severely outperform any rare blade. They also have extremely useful skills like orb master, which lets you set up orbs at any point of the blade combo. Don't just trash your commons, guys.

And by the way, it is an absolute pain to find your good commons between hundreds of other common blade. There should be a sort by last usage or a way to set favorites.

On the other hand, the game is easy enough that you can get through it with basically anything and common blades are really lame.

And I definitely agree with the blade management. It's really annoying.

One thing to do early, and I don't know if you have to do the Deeds side quest to unlock it, is go to the fish store on the third level of the first town. It has a deed you can buy at Prosperity level 0 that increases all Idea gains by 1.

that one's a scripted fight like the one from the end of chapter 3, just focus Malos and try to get him to half and trigger the cutscene and it'll get way easier after that. Use a chain attack to get him to half if you have to.

While Rex is still probably objectively the best, different characters do have different skills on the same weapon types, so it's not like he can do literally all the exact same stuff as the other DPS. Also the other DPS seems to have weapon skills geared more towards ether attacks, which might be relevant somehow? Their stats also seem a good deal higher to start with even with the same gear, and their mandatory blade seems to have a good affinity map.

I like how Wulfric is a big softy who is upset about how his appearance/voice makes other people scared of him. I really wish Azami had a better affinity chart, because I love her character design.

In general I find it really easy to zone out and grind rare blades in this. It's satisfying for some reason, and the quests often being voiced and including cutscenes certainly helps.

Yeah, Azami looks awesome, but her affinity chart is really bizarre and doesn't seem that good. I can't really think of a situation where it would be particularly good; like, if your DPS is at <30% health frequently enough for it to be worth it, things have probably gone terribly wrong. What I've done of her quest chain is pretty funny, though. (Speaking of funny quest chains, I really like Sheba's. Her JP voice acting is funny.)

In fairness, it's less egregious than usual, because Pyra is presented as having a separate/distinct personality from the one who was actually that. Which like... doesn't make it much better? But it's a little better.
