I always volunteered to work Christmas Eve / Day in retail because I was 6 hours away from family. All I was going to do was play video games and get drunk so I had no problem taking the shift so people with kids and families nearby could have the time off.

The company I work for has a small retail store as a sort of sister company and we've been trying to hire someone for at least the holiday season for several months now. 90% of people don't even show up for the interview. Like I get it, it's retail and it sucks, but if you ask for an interview and get one scheduled (and in a couple cases get it rescheduled) wouldn't you at least show up?

Like I wouldn't mind having that Friday and Saturday off and could use those days to go see family but my boyfriend doesnt have any PTO to use to take that Friday off and I cant just leave him up here. We have two cars but the one he drives is trustworthy on the interstate, mine is not. Yeah maybe it could be done but goddamnit its christmas can I just have one less thing to worry about? Ill figure something out. That something may be taking a xanax and chilling through the workday like "family? what family" being berated by customers and having 14 drink orders for a whole car and then polishing a bottle of wine in the tub that night but whatever works I guess.

There was some competition for the hours, but once you were signed up, you wouldn't get scheduled for any unfilled shifts. The way I did it this year (first as a manager) was volunteers first, but then let everybody know of the remaining shifts everyone will have to take turns. But then lots of people volunteered.

Or it could be people that did not realize it was seasonal. It's always a pain in the rear end to hire / retain seasonal. Most bail right before Christmas when they realize they will absolutely be working Christmas Eve and in some cases Christmas days. About half of my seasonal employees had no call no shows by the 23rd or 26th.

I think that's what our leadership was trying to address when they froze hiring except through service (aside from deli, which is an ongoing disaster). The plan was that all those cashiers that would have been holiday temps were gonna be moved to other departments in January. What's actually happening is there's still as much turnover throughout the store as ever, but service couldn't give up any manpower even if they wanted to because none of those new cashiers last more than a week.

After 8 years of working at an Olive garden. I got an IT position working at a warehouse that sells commercial and industrial electronic appliances. Pay is higher, will work around my school schedule, and once my 90 day period is up I am expected to get paid 4 more an hour. I am putting in my two weeks on monday and I could not be happier.

I dislike ice cream. Eating it is fine, working with it is a pain. Why? For starters, it's bulky. The typical ice cream containers come six to a pack, wrapped in plastic binding. The moment you cut the bands, that's it- you've got six loose containers and no box to put back stock in. Both these things severely limit how much you can take to the floor at one time. Another reason I dislike it is that unlike regular frozen foods, ice cream builds up a layer of condensation or something on the outside. If you wear gloves, they get soaked, and become useless. If you don't, you're sticking bare, wet hands in a freezer for a few hours. There are ways around this, but they're varying degrees of a pain in my rear end. Most of the time, I don't have to work ice cream. The truck it's delivered on arrives in the evening, usually when I'm off. It is very much Not My Problem, but when it is, it forces me to take limited time away from my department. A few days ago, the co-manager of the store informed me that corporate sent them a memo. Frozen food would no longer be arriving on the perishable truck with produce and dairy. Frozen food would now be shipped with ice cream. This means that: 1) My schedule will probably change. How? Nobody knows yet. 2) Ice cream is now my thing. 3) My responsibilities will likely increase, but my pay remains the same. 4) The average ice cream pallet is somewhere between 40-80 cases. On an average frozen food load, I deal with about 110 cases. 140-160 cases would be considered 'a loving lot'. I could realistically be seeing 200+ case trucks not uncommonly. In closing,

Have you tried wearing a big pair of rubber dishwashing gloves over your normal gloves? Would still work and the rubber gloves tend to be kinda grippy. Eats tactile sensation a little but so does having cold wet hands.

I like traditional, classic christmas carols. Things like Little Drummer Boy; Hark the Herald Angels sing; O come all ye faithful...that sort of stuff. When they start playing some of the more modern ones, or modern 'interpretations' of traditional ones, then they can get annoying.

A battery doesn't just die like that though. But like I said, customers are loving stupid, so I believe it somehow happened, but damned if I could actually explain how they did that. Edit: Actually, thinking about it, the only thing that makes sense is if they left the car running in the car wash with no undertrays protecting it while getting the underside of the car sprayed, shorting out the main charging circuit and blowing out the 100ish amp maxi fuse between the battery and the rest of the car. Or shorted something else out somehow. Elmnt80 fucked around with this message at 06:51 on Dec 17, 2017 |

Now it's going to be delivered by our own distribution chain. Why wasn't it like this before? I found out more today, including the fact that my truck is supposed to arrive 'between 7AM and 8PM', depending on how corporate decides to plan the distribution. This, of course, assumes that the truck actually arrives whenever the hell it is supposed to arrive. They commonly do not. I also found out that I won't be working ice cream alone ( yay ), but that I'll be splitting hours with someone who also multi-tasks ( boo ), and we'll be fighting for time out of the same labor pool. Given that we both already average a hair under thirty hours a week... yeesh. We're meeting sales and making money, but cutting hours, going into one of the busiest weeks of the year.

I'm gonna be honest, this morning my local classical music station was doing 1930s brass section jazz covers of the top twenty carols and they were genuinely good. All I want really though for every grocery store is to run heavy metal bagpipe versions of that poo poo only on the day of christmas eve to really get the blood pumping for the battle royale over $20 prepaid gift cards. If I can craft swords and shields out of broken down banana boxes and pit Produce against Dairy against Cashiers in some grand orgy of violence my job on this good green earth will be complete.

Work called. "So the dairy guy called out, do you want to come in and work a seven hour shift?" That's what the message on my machine says, anyways. They cut my schedule by five hours for this week, so by going in I wouldn't be making any extra money- I'd just be making what I usually make. Plus two hours. And I work the next five days in a row. How about I get trashed on Wild Turkey and play Metal Gear instead

To be fair I am fairly certain most 'do not rehire' lists must have some kinda sundown clause because I have gotten rehired at places where 18 year old me didn't go to work one day because sleep good work bad. But yeah, that's pretty stupid. I love how some corporations hate when their workers act like capitalism dictates they should.

I recently switched departments, and for the first fortnight I'm covering the role normally filled by my coworker, who is on a full time contract. Problem is, I am only part time, so I can't cover her full hours without hitting OT. Another problem is our breaks are different. She takes 30min paid+60min unpaid over each 9 hour shift, but I have a work rule in place that means I only take 30min paid+30min unpaid. So for every 9hr shift we're rostered, she does 8, but I do 8.5. So I am currently rostered to work 42.5 paid hours/wk for the next two weeks, even though I can only actually work 36 if those without hitting OT. And, as mentioned earlier, Our Store Doesn't Do OT. So this will be an interesting problem for them to solve. I'm currently planning on working my hours as rostered and hoping I can get a day in lieu out of it if no one notices in time, because gently caress spending an extra 30min at work every day without pay. It would be fine if I could start late/leave early, but they specifically need me on the floor 10am-12pm and 6pm-7pm, so that's not an option. Also, apparently I got paid 2hrs OT last paycheck somehow, which is super weird because I didn't think I was anywhere close to the threshold for it. Looking forward to the extra $15 or whatever. Not sure why it really merits the regional manager calling up my line manager to scream at her but whatever
